Residentiary Canons vs. Honorary Canons: Why the Difference?

If you’ve ever attended a cathedral service, you may have heard clergy introduced as Residentiary Canons or Honorary Canons and wondered:

Aren’t they both Canons?

The answer is Yes, but they are not the same, don’t argue, if you truly want to learn how the office came to be

The distinction lies not in their priesthood, but in their role within the cathedral.

A Residentiary Canon is a canon who is appointed to serve as part of the cathedral’s permanent chapter or resident clergy. As the name suggests, “residentiary” comes from the idea of residing at or being attached to the cathedral. These canons have ongoing responsibilities in the worship, administration, governance, and daily life of the cathedral. In many provinces, they may also hold offices such as Precentor, Chancellor, Treasurer, or Canon Pastor.

For example, at many English cathedrals, the Dean and several Residentiary Canons form the Cathedral Chapter and oversee the day-to-day running of the cathedral.

An Honorary Canon, on the other hand, is usually a priest who serves outside the cathedral perhaps as a parish priest, chaplain, theologian, or diocesan officer, but is granted the title of Canon by the bishop as a mark of honour and recognition for faithful service to the Church.

Honorary Canons may be invited to participate in major cathedral services and processions, but they do not ordinarily take part in the cathedral’s daily administration or resident ministry.

For clarity sake

A Residentiary Canon has an office and ongoing responsibilities within the cathedral, what the church of Nigeria refers to as statutory canons

An Honorary Canon has an honour bestowed by the bishop, without becoming part of the cathedral’s resident leadership.

It is worth noting that not every Anglican province uses these titles in exactly the same way. Some provinces have only Honorary Canons, while others maintain both Residentiary and Honorary Canons as part of their cathedral structure.

The residentiary/statutory have stalls in the cathedral, and can be invited to host/ preach a service at the cathedral through the permission of the bishop.

So yes, they are both Canons, but one is a working member of the cathedral chapter, while the other is honoured for distinguished ministry without being part of the cathedral’s resident staff.
