THE BLESSING OF SURRENDER
Opening Scripture
Romans 12:1
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
Devotional
In Christ, surrender is not a demand placed on a guilty man; it is the response of a loved son. God is not asking you to surrender so He can accept you. He accepted you in Christ, and now surrender becomes the joyful agreement with what grace has already accomplished.
The foundation of surrender is mercy. Paul did not say, “by the judgment of God,” but “by the mercies of God.” This means everything God asks of you flows from what He has already given to you. Before instruction comes redemption. Before obedience comes acceptance. Ephesians 1:7 says that in Christ we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins according to the riches of His grace.
True surrender is the yielding of trust. It is the heart saying, “Lord, Your wisdom is greater than mine.” Proverbs 3:5 teaches us to trust in the Lord with all our heart and not lean on our own understanding. Surrender is not weakness; it is confidence in a faithful Father.
Jesus revealed the beauty of surrender. In Luke 22:42 He said, Father, not my will, but yours be done. His surrender was not defeat; it was victory. Through that surrender came salvation, righteousness, and reconciliation for mankind.
For the believer, surrender produces transformation. Romans 12:2 explains that we are transformed by the renewing of our minds. As we agree with God’s Word, our thinking changes and our living follows. The Christian life is not behavior modification but mind renewal flowing from identity in Christ.
Surrender also produces rest. Many struggles come from trying to control outcomes that belong to God. Matthew 11:28–29 shows that when we come to Christ and take His yoke, we find rest for our souls. The surrendered heart stops striving and begins trusting.
The blessing of surrender is guidance. Psalm 37:5 says, Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in Him; and He shall bring it to pass. When our lives are yielded to Him, direction becomes clearer because we are no longer competing with His will.
Ultimately, surrender is living by Christ’s life within us. Galatians 2:20 declares that we have been crucified with Christ and now live by the faith of the Son of God who loved us and gave Himself for us. The surrendered life is simply allowing the life of Christ to be expressed through us.
Surrender is therefore not loss but liberty. We lay down our limited control and receive His limitless grace.
