TOPIC: LEARNING WISDOM FROM THE INSIGNIFICANT
TEXT: Proverbs 30:24–28
PREACHER: Prekebena Eric Oyin, DCE, DD(h.c), PhD
1. INTRODUCTION
The book of Proverbs is filled with divine wisdom for successful and godly living. In this passage, the writer draws our attention to certain tiny creatures that many people often ignore. Though they appear small, weak, and insignificant, they carry profound lessons for life.
Proverbs 30:24a
“There be four things which are little upon the earth…”
These four creatures are:
1. Ants
2. Conies (Rock Badgers)
3. Locusts
4. Spider (or lizard in some translations)
Because they are small and seemingly unimportant, many people overlook them. Yet God, in His wisdom, uses these little creatures to teach mighty truths.
Proverbs 30:24b
“…but they are exceeding wise.”
This means that although they are little in size, they possess remarkable wisdom in conduct, survival, and purpose. God wants us to understand that greatness is not measured by size, status, or outward appearance, but by wisdom.
Many people feel insignificant because of their background, age, finances, or lack of influence. But this Scripture reminds us that even the smallest can become examples of wisdom.
May the Holy Spirit teach us through this study and grant us understanding in Yahusha’s (Jesus’) mighty name. Amen.
2. WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM THE INSIGNIFICANT?
1. The Ants – Wisdom of Planning and Preparation
Proverbs 30:25
“The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their meat in the summer.”
Ants are tiny and weak, yet they are wise enough to prepare for the future. They gather food in seasons of abundance so they will not suffer in seasons of scarcity.
Lessons from the Ant:
Plan ahead.
Use present opportunities wisely.
Prepare for difficult times before they come.
Avoid laziness and procrastination.
Build today for tomorrow.
Many people fail not because they lack ability, but because they refuse to prepare. Wisdom teaches us to use today responsibly.
2. The Conies (Rock Badgers) – Wisdom of Safe Building
Proverbs 30:26
“The conies are but a feeble folk, yet make they their houses in the rocks.”
The coney or rock badger is weak and defenseless, yet it survives by building its home in the rocks where predators cannot easily reach it.
Lessons from the Conies:
Know your weakness and seek strength in God.
Build your life on a solid foundation.
Security is found in the right place.
Depend on God, the Rock of Ages.
A wise believer does not trust in personal strength, but in God.
Psalm 18:2
“The Lord is my rock, and my fortress…”
Those who build their lives on Christ shall stand when storms come.
3. The Locust – Wisdom of Cooperation and Unity
Proverbs 30:27
“The locusts have no king, yet go they forth all of them by bands.”
Locusts have no visible ruler, yet they move together in unity, discipline, and order. Their combined strength makes them powerful.
Lessons from the Locust:
Unity creates strength.
Cooperation accomplishes more than isolation.
Discipline brings order.
Teamwork multiplies results.
The Church must learn this lesson. When believers walk in unity, the work of God advances powerfully.
Ecclesiastes 4:9
“Two are better than one…”
Division weakens, but unity empowers.
4. The Spider – Wisdom of Persistence and Fearlessness
Proverbs 30:28
“The spider taketh hold with her hands, and is in kings’ palaces.”
Though small and fragile, the spider uses persistence and skill to reach places of honor—even kings’ palaces. It is not intimidated by greatness or environment.
Lessons from the Spider:
Do not despise small beginnings.
Persistence opens doors.
Skill can take you to great places.
Be courageous and determined.
Keep building even when your work is torn down.
The spider may lose its web many times, but it rebuilds again. That is resilience.
A child of God must learn to rise after setbacks and keep pressing forward.
3. ADDITIONAL SPIRITUAL LESSONS
These little creatures also teach us that:
1. God Values Wisdom Above Appearance
The world celebrates size and status, but God celebrates wisdom.
2. No One Is Too Small to Matter
You may feel unnoticed, but God can use your life greatly.
3. Nature Reveals Divine Truth
Creation itself is a classroom for those willing to learn.
4. CONCLUSION
Job 12:7
“But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee.”
God teaches through His creation. If we humble ourselves, we can learn wisdom from things many people ignore.
Solving difficult problems may require intelligence, but living a fruitful and meaningful life requires wisdom. Success is not built merely on intellect, talent, or education—it is built on wisdom from God.
Let us therefore learn from the ant to prepare, from the coney to build wisely, from the locust to cooperate, and from the spider to persevere.
No matter how small or insignificant you may feel, God can make your life a testimony of wisdom and impact.
Prayer:
Father, give me wisdom to live purposefully. Teach me to prepare like the ant, trust You like the coney, walk in unity like the locust, and persevere like the spider. In Yahusha’s name, Amen.
