REVIVAL BIBLE STUDY SERIES IN ASSEMBLIES OF GOD, ETEGWE NORTH

Topic: God's Standard of Righteousness

Memory Verse: Matthew 5:20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Supporting Texts: Matthew 23:1-36, Mark 7:1-13, Luke 11:37-52

Teacher: Tony Rufus

Introduction
Jesus had strong words for the Pharisees, Scribes, and Sadducees, exposing their hypocrisy and spiritual blindness. Let's explore their characteristics and learn how to avoid their pitfalls.

Characteristics of the Pharisees, Scribes, and Sadducees

1. Hypocrisy (Matthew 23:3, 14, 25-28)
- They said one thing but did another (Luke 11:39-42)
- Outward piety, inward corruption (Mark 7:1-9)

2. Legalism (Matthew 23:4, 13-15)
- Burdened others with heavy loads (Luke 11:46)
- Missed the heart of the law (Matthew 23:23-24)

3. Pride and Self-Righteousness (Matthew 23:5-7, 29-31)
- Lived for praise and recognition (Luke 11:43)
- Despised others (Luke 18:9-14)

4. Spiritual Blindness (Matthew 23:16-22, 32-33)
- Misinterpreted Scripture (Mark 7:10-13)
- Refused to see Jesus' true identity (John 9:35-41)

5. Corruption and Greed (Matthew 23:14, 25)
- Exploited others for personal gain (Luke 11:39)
- Lived in luxury while ignoring the poor (Luke 16:14)

Jesus' Warning
"Unless your righteousness exceeds that of the Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 5:20). Let's examine our hearts and surrender to Jesus' transformative power.

Conclusion
The Pharisees, Scribes, and Sadducees were spiritually bankrupt, despite their outward appearance. Let's not be like them. Let's pursue genuine faith, humility, and obedience to God's Word.

Song: It's not an easy road

1. It's not an easy road
We are traveling to heaven,
For many are the thorns on the way;
It's not an easy road,
But the Savior is with us,
His presence gives us joy every day.
No, no, it's not an easy road,
No, no, it's not an easy road;
But Jesus walks beside me
And brightens the journey,
And lightens every heavy load.

2. t's not an easy road
There are trials and troubles
And many are the dangers we meet;
But Jesus guards and keeps
So that nothing can harm us,
And smooths the rugged path for our feet.
No, no, it's not an easy road,
No, no, it's not an easy road;
But Jesus walks beside me
And brightens the journey,
And lightens every heavy load.

3. Though I am often footsore
And weary from travel,
Though I am often bowed down with care,
Well a better day is coming
When home in the glory
We'll rest in perfect peace over there.
No, no, it's not an easy road,
No, no, it's not an easy road;
But Jesus walks beside me
And brightens the journey,
And lightens every heavy load.

GENERAL COUNCIL SPIRITUAL EMPHASIS MONTH
Topic: Biblical Pattern For Revival
Text: Ps. 85:6; Luke 15:11-21

Introduction: The parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-21) illustrates the biblical pattern for revival. Let's explore how this story reflects the path to spiritual renewal. Every Revival was a product of consistent, dedicated prayers and consecration. Why is revival still lacking in the church? It's very possible we are not praying right. It's possible we have become hypocritical prayer warriors like the Pharisees. This was what our Lord Jesus Christ addressed in Matthew 23:14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
We compete for long hours spent in prayers yet see little or no results. We must examine ourselves and check the contents of our hearts while we pray. May God revive his church in Jesus Christ's name Amen. May not get to the point where sin no longer matter to us.

The Biblical Pattern for Revival follows the pattern below;
1. Realization
- The prodigal son "came to himself" (Luke 15:17), realizing his spiritual state
- He recognized his need for change and restoration (Ps. 85:6)

2. Repentance
- The son repented, turning away from his sinful ways (Luke 15:18-19)
- He confessed his sins and sought his father's mercy (1 John 1:9)

3. Renunciation
- The son renounced his old life, leaving behind his reckless ways (Luke 15:18-19)
- He was willing to forsake his sinful practices (Acts 19:18-20)

4. Seeking God's Face
- The son sought his father's face, returning home (Luke 15:20)
- He sought reconciliation and restoration (Matt. 6:16-18)

5. Outpouring of Revival
- The father welcomed the son with open arms (Luke 15:20-24)
- He celebrated the son's return, restoring his position and blessing him (Acts 2:1-4)

Conclusion
The prodigal son's story illustrates the path to spiritual renewal: realization, repentance, renunciation, seeking God's face, and experiencing His outpouring. What the Elders of Ezra 3:12 saw and wept was what the younger noisy generation saw and shouted for joy. The temple that carried the intense glory of God that didn't allow the priest and worshippers to enter was destroyed because God's people turned to strange gods. Now they built a temple that didn't carry such glory and God said "I now want to occupy humans". May we not loose the glory of God. Let's follow this pattern and experience revival!

Bible study Topic: The Christians' Roles In This Present World
Text: Matthew 5:13-16

Introduction
Jesus taught His followers about their roles in the world using the metaphors of salt and light. As Christians, we are called to fulfill these roles and bring glory to God.

I. The Purpose Of SALTINESS
1. The ROLE
- verse 13a, "You are the salt of the earth." (preserve the earth from corruption)
2. The REWARD
- verse 13b, "But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men." (no indignation because of becoming more important)

II. The Purpose Of SHINING
1. The ROLE
- verses 14-15, "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house." (portrayal as light to the people)
2. The REWARD
- verse 16, "In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven." (God will give us good attitude and good aptitude as testimonies to the world)

Conclusion: As Christians, we are entrusted with significant roles in this world. May we fulfill these roles with passion, obedience, and humility, bringing glory to God and blessing to others.

Issues to R-E-F-L-E-C-T:
R-eflect on your saltiness: Are you preserving and flavoring the world around you, or are you losing your distinctiveness?
E-valuate your light: Are you shining brightly for all to see, or are you hiding your light under a bowl?
F-ocus on your role: What specific ways can you fulfill your role as salt and light in your community and workplace?
L-et your light shine: What good deeds can you do today to bring praise to God and bless others?
E-xamine your heart: Are you motivated to bring glory to God and bless others, or are you seeking recognition and praise from people?
C-onsider your influence: How can you use your words and actions to positively impact those around you and point them to Christ?
T-reasure your calling: How can you cherish and fulfill the significant role you've been entrusted with as a Christian, bringing glory to God and blessing to others?

Dear Zecharias and Elizabeth, the attack in your life is not about you, it's about a "John the Baptist" that's about to emerge from you. It may get worse just before your best manifest. Hold on to Jesus.

Revival Bible study series in Assemblies of God Etegwe North
Topic: SEVEN THINGS GOD HATES
Teacher: Anthony Rufus
Text: Proverbs 6:16 These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: 6:17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, 6:18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, 6:19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

I. Introduction
The Bible teaches us that God is love (1 John 4:8), but it also reveals that God has strong dislikes and hatred towards certain things. In Proverbs 6:16-19, we find a list of seven things that God hates.

II. The Seven Things God Hates
1. Haughty eyes, Proud Look (Proverbs 6:17a)
- Characteristics: Pride, arrogance, superiority complex, looking down on others
- God resists the proud (James 4:6)
- Humility is key to avoiding God's hatred
Here are some common features of pride:

3. Self-centeredness: Everything revolves around you
4. Lack of empathy: Difficulty understanding others' feelings
5. Inability to admit mistakes: Always right, never wrong
6. Need for admiration: Fishing for compliments
7. Disregard for others' opinions: Who cares what they think?
8. Haughty eyes: Looking down on others
9. Boastful speech: Bragging about achievements

THE NEED FOR REVIVAL
Text: Psalm 85:6
Teacher: Anthony Rufus

I. Introduction
Revival is an old concept in the Christian fold, especially in the circle of Pentecostal Protestantism. The mention of the word revival seems to stimulate revival itself. Revival is a necessity for spiritual survival and Kingdom accomplishment. Revival is the antidote to spiritual backsliding and coldness. It generates spiritual energy to do exploits. Revival makes a Christian an asset in the house of God. The Holy Spirit is the author of true revival. In these last days, there is a great need for revival in the body of Christ than anytime. Let us therefore hunger for revival.

II. What is Revival?
Revival simply means to be awake spiritually (Ephesians 5:14). It is to come alive in your spirit. It is the operation of God's grace at work in you, keeping you on fire for God (2 Timothy 1:6). Regular spiritual exercises are tools to generate lasting revival.

III. Who needs Revival?
Revival is basically the need of every Christian (2 Chronicles 7:14). There is no limit to needing revival. Being revived and staying revived is a necessity for every believer. So, the spiritually weak, cold or sick needs revival; the spiritually strong, hot and healthy needs revival. The pastor, evangelist, prophet, apostle, deacon, deaconess, church worker and every member needs revival (1 Corinthians 12:27-31).

IV. Why is Revival necessary?

1. Helps maintain a vibrant Christian life (John 15:1-8)
2. Helps utilize the gift(s) of God in you (2 Timothy 1:6)
3. Increases God's love in you for God and others (Romans 5:5)
4. Renews passion for evangelism (soul winning) (Acts 1:8)
5. Creates deep hunger for the Word of God (1 Peter 2:2)
6. Empowers and emboldens against forces of darkness (Ephesians 6:10-18)
7. Charges prayer life and makes it effectual (James 5:16-18)
8. Increases and retains God's presence (Psalm 22:3)
9. Boosts holiness and humility - kills sinful desires (2 Corinthians 7:1)
10. Keeps you rapture conscious and ready (Matthew 25:1-13)

V. Signs of Not Fully Surrendered to God
1. You pray for God’s will, but quietly hold onto your own.
2. You seek confirmation, not correction.
3. You trust God with salvation, but struggle to trust Him with daily decisions.
4. You obey selectively, only when it does not cost much.
5. You explain away conviction instead of responding to it.
6. You process with people first and pray second.
7. You want God’s comfort without His commands.
8. Your faith is driven by feelings, not commitment.
9. You protect your attachments more than your obedience.
10. You postpone obedience, waiting for conditions to feel right.
11. You consume Scripture, but resist its authority over your life.
12. You ask God to support your agenda instead of laying it down.
13. You confess Jesus as Savior, but hesitate to submit to Him as Lord (Luke 6:46).
14. You keep surrender in theory, not in practice.
15. You choose ease over obedience, comfort over the cross.

VI. Conclusion
Revival is a necessity for every believer. Until we are completely yielded to God and dead to the flesh, there may be no revival. Let's hunger for it and prioritize spiritual exercises to generate lasting revival.

Prayer
Lord, awaken us to the need for revival. Stir us to hunger for Your presence and power. Revive us and keep us revived for Your glory. Amen.

Discussion Questions:
1. What areas of your life need revival?
2. How can you prioritize spiritual exercises for lasting revival?
3. Share one reason why revival is necessary for you.
