THE MISCONCEPTION OF "I DON'T NEED A SPIRITUAL FATHER
One of the greatest misconceptions in this generation is the belief that a believer does not need spiritual guidance or fatherly mentorship. While God is our Heavenly Father, He also raises mature servants to disciple, teach, encourage, and help believers grow in Christ.
No one is born physically and raises himself. From the day you were born, someone carried you, fed you, taught you to speak, corrected you, and guided you until you matured. The same principle applies spiritually. God often uses mature believers to nurture younger believers in the faith. A person who refuses godly instruction will struggle to reach spiritual maturity.
A SPIRITUAL FATHER IS MORE THAN A TEACHER
1 Corinthians 4:15 (KJV) *For though ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel.*
Paul distinguished between an instructor and a father.
- An instructor gives information.
- A father gives his life.
A SPIRITUAL FATHER
- Prays for you.
- Teaches you the Word of God.
- Corrects you in love.
- Encourages you during difficult seasons.
- Holds you accountable.
- Desires your spiritual growth more than your gifts or achievements.
WHAT A SPIRITUAL FATHER IS NOT
- A spiritual father is not someone who manipulates people or is constantly seeking personal gain.
- A genuine spiritual father is concerned about your soul, your character, your family, and your relationship with God. His desire is to see you grow into spiritual maturity and fulfill God's purpose for your life.
THE IMPORTANCE OF CORRECTION
-One reason many believers remain spiritually immature is because they reject correction.
-Correction is not rejection.
-Correction is one of God's instruments for producing maturity, wisdom, and Christlike character.
-A wise son receives instruction, but a foolish son despises correction.
Follow Godly Examples
1 Corinthians 11:1 (KJV) *Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.* Paul never asked believers to follow him blindly. He instructed them to imitate him only as he followed Christ.
This is the biblical pattern of spiritual fatherhood. Every true spiritual father points people to Jesus Christ and never seeks to replace Him.
- Spiritual growth requires humility and teachability.
- God uses spiritual fathers, pastors, and mentors to nurture His people.
- Honor opens the door to receiving wisdom and instruction.
- Correction is an expression of love, not rejection.
- Every spiritual leader is accountable to Christ.
- Jesus Christ remains the Head of the Church and our ultimate example.
We thank God for faithful pastors, mentors, and spiritual fathers who labor in prayer, faithfully teach God's Word, and lovingly shepherd His people.
May we remain humble, teachable, and willing to receive biblical instruction as we continue to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
*A son honoureth his father, and a servant his master: if then I be a father, where is mine honour?Malachi 1:6 (KJV)*
1. Heavenly Father, give me a humble, teachable, and obedient spirit. Remove every seed of pride, rebellion, and resistance to godly correction, and help me to grow into spiritual maturity according to Your will.
2. Lord, bless and strengthen every faithful pastor, mentor, and spiritual father You have placed over my life. Fill them with fresh grace, wisdom, discernment, and divine strength to lead Your people faithfully, and help me to honor godly leadership in a way that glorifies Christ alone.
