Independence Day: Gov. Diri Commemorates Bayelsa at 26
"We are all gathered today in our State Capital, Yenagoa, to commemorate the glorious day, the Union Jack was lowered and the proud Green and White Flag of Nigeria was raised in its stead.
It signaled the end of an era, and the beginning of a new era with great promises.
It is my conviction that the creation of a holy homogenous state for the Ijaws who have long borne and continued to carry the economic burden of Nigeria -great sacrifice sharing the same anniversary with our country Nigeria is not merely fictitious, but a divinely orchestrated plan to continually highlight the disquiet disequilibrium that defined the relationship that exists between our country and our state Bayelsa.
Today however, my intention is not to focus on these inequities, inequalities and contradictions, and they are legend, including but not limited to true fiscal federalism, or rather the absence thereof, resource control, environmental degradation, disproportionate smalll number of Local Government Areas in Bayelsa, and the lack of federal character in the state. In the midst of all of these, let me wish our people happy 62nd Independence Anniversary and the 26th anniversary of the creation of Bayelsa State."
~Gov. Douye Diri, Governor of Bayelsa State, speaking during the Independence Day Parade at Peace Park, Yenagoa which witnessed march past from the security outfits, para-military organisations, primary and secondary schools.
