*TOPIC: THE HOME FILLED WITH UNSURPASSABLE LOVE OF CHRIST*
*TEXT:*
Song of Solomon 8:7; 1 Cor. 13:1-3.
*INTRODUCTION:*
Christians are called to be the salt and light of the world, which means we are to reflect the love of Christ always in our homes and
communities. To have a home filled with unsurpassable love of Christ is to ensure that our homes radiate the type of love that is beyond what any other person can attain or demonstrate therein. This will make us both as individuals land families have an
atmosphere that is filled with love, joy and peace that can only come from our Saviour and Lord.
This study will help us look critically at what| we are expected to do to make our homes reflect the unsurpassable love of Christ.
*LESSON OBJECTIVES:*
The objectives of this lesson are to:-
1. explain the term unsurpassable love;
2. identify the commandments we are given in Deut.6:5; Mat.22:37-39; Jn.3:11.
3. understand the characteristics of love;
4. understand why we should love; and
5. consider why it is difficult to love sometimes
*BIBLE TRUTH:*
*Q1. EXPLAIN THE TERM UNSURPASSABLE LOVE?*
The phrase 'unsurpassable love' is made up of two words and we look at what each one means to enable us understand it better. Unsurpassable simply means it
cannot be exceeded in quality or degree. In other words, it means it is the highest point that can be attained in anything. It is that zenith or pinnacle of anything and as such, no one can go beyond it or improve on it. It is the ultimate.
Love on the other hand can be described as a complex human emotion, encompassing affection, care, commitment and passionate desire manifesting as a deep emotional attachment to another person. It can be expressed through different behaviours such as kindness, words of affirmation or quality time. Thus, unsurpassable love is the love that is not comparable, unequalled, exceptional or unique.
*Q2. IDENTIFY THE GIVEN IN INSTRUCTION THE FOLLOWING SCRIPTURES:*
Deut.6:5; Matt.22:37-39; John.13:34; 1 John 3:11.
In summary, we are admonished in all the passages above to love unconditionally.
We are instructed that the whole duty ofman which God requires is to love Him with our totality. Our Lord Jesus told us that loving God with all our hearts, soul and mind is the greatest of all the commandments. This, combined with the second part which is to love our neighbours as ourselves is the sum total of all the laws. (Matt.22:37-39).
By the time we truly love God as we are expected to do with all that is in us and also love our neighbours as ourselves, we will be virtually keeping all the laws of the
commandments.
This love is mandatory for all humans, especially the Christians. It is a command and we are duty bound to obey it to the letter. That will make all men know that we are His disciples.
*Q3. WHAT ARE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF LOVE?* 1 Cor.13:4-7.
Most times, people confuse love and lust. Unlike lust, God's kind of love is directed towards others and toward ourselves. It is not selfish and not dependent on how much the beneficiary loves us before we show it to him. We are able to demonstrate this kind of love by the grace of God. We give love while not expecting anything in return which makes it quite different from lust. Among the characteristics of love from the passage above is that it is not puffed up and is not bloated with self-conceit. True love will esteem others more than it does itself. It is humble no matter its achievement. Love calms the angry passions instead of raising them.
Another feature of love is that it behaves not unseemly, meaning it does nothing out of place or time but is courteous in its behaviour which is always good towards all men.
One other characteristic of love is
selflessness. It does not seek its own to hurt others, but rather it often neglects its own for the sake of others. Love is not exasperated, that is love, is not irritated or annoyed to the point of doing things that are not right or that will be regretted later.
Love will always quench the flame of fire that wrath will kindle. Anger cannot dwell in the bosom where love reigns because it is not easy to be angry with the people we love.
*Q4. WHY SHOULD WE LOVE?* John.14:21-23.
We love because we are commanded to do so by our Lord Jesus Christ. Love made Him to come to the world to die for our sins and reconcile us back to the Father. Love is not kust mere words, but
commitment and conduct. We cannot say we are Christians if we do not love. Love is the foundation on which the whole law stands. God is love and as His children, we are expected to demonstrate our relationship with Him by the way we love one another.
*Q5. WHY IS IT SOMETIMES DIFFICULT TO LOVE:* 2 Cor.5: 14.
The reason we sometimes find it difficult to love is due to the level of our yielded- ness to Christ. When we are totally and truly yielded like Apostle Paul and the early apostles, we will do everything to honour our Lord like the apostles of old. His love will be the motivating factor. As a result of His death for us, we also should be dead to our old ways and as such should no longer live to please ourselves. We should spend our lives to please Christ who died and rose again for us.
Our love for Christ will have this virtue and His love for us will also constrain us to love.
*DAILY LIVING APPLICATION:*
We are to always remember that a home filled with unsurpassable love of Christ is a haven of hope, joy and peace. By applying the Biblical principles we have seen in this study, we can create in our homes an atmosphere of love, peace and kindness, compassion that reflect the heart of our Lord and Saviour.
