BIBLE STUDY SERIES ON "HONOUR"
Topic 3: Honour: The Secret of Blessing
Presenter: Anthony Rufus
Anchor Texts: 1 Samuel 2:30 Wherefore the LORD God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever: but now the LORD saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed.
Malachi 1:6 (KJV/NKJV), which reads: "A son honoureth his father, and a servant his master: if then I be a father, where is mine honour? and if I be a master, where is my fear? saith the LORD of hosts unto you, O priests, that despise my name.".
Text: Proverbs 3:9-10, 1 Samuel 24:6, Genesis 14:18-20, Genesis 18:1-8
Introduction: God responds to honour with blessing. Honour is not flattery—it’s the tangible way we value God above everything else.
1. What Honour Really Means
Definition: Honour = assigning weight, value, and priority to someone through action, not just words. It’s choosing God’s presence over your preference, God’s timing over your impulse. Honour precedes increase. God said, “Those who honour me I will honour”.
Two men, two moments, one principle. Watch how honour unlocked blessing.
2. Case Study 1: Abraham – Honouring God in His Giving and Hospitality Genesis 14:18-20; Genesis 18:1-8_
A. Honour in Giving: Tithe to Melchizedek
1. The act: Abraham gave 10% of all spoils to Melchizedek, priest of God Most High, _before_ he met the king of S***m.
2. The meaning: He acknowledged that victory, provision, and protection came from God, not his sword.
3. The result: God affirmed the covenant with Abraham in Gen 15 and later made him “father of many nations.” He refused S***m’s wealth so no man could say, “I made Abram rich.”
B. Honour in Hospitality: The Three Visitors
1. The act: Abraham ran to meet strangers, washed their feet, and served them a meal at his own cost and effort.
2. The meaning: He treated them as if he was serving God Himself. Honour creates room for the Divine.
3. The result: Within that encounter, Sarah received the promise of Isaac. The blessing of posterity was spoken and sealed.
Key Insight: Abraham honoured God with his _resources_ and his _time_. Blessing followed because his heart said, “You come first.”
3. Case Study 2: David – Honouring God by Honouring His Process*
_1 Samuel 24:1-7; 1 Samuel 26:9-11_
A. The Test: Saul, the man anointed by God, was hunting David to kill him. David had two clear chances to end it.
B. The Act: David refused to “stretch out his hand against the Lord’s anointed.” He cut Saul’s robe instead and later rebuked Abishai for wanting to kill him.
C. The Meaning: David valued God’s authority and timing more than his own vindication. He honoured the office even when the man failed.
D. The Result: God preserved David’s life, preserved his integrity, and eventually established him on the throne without blood on his hands. His honour became his shield.
Key Insight: David honoured God with his _restraint_. He chose to trust God’s justice over personal justice. Blessing followed because he wouldn’t build his destiny on disobedience.
4. The Common Thread: Honour is the Secret of Blessing*
1. Honour is proactive, not reactive
Abraham gave before he was asked. David withheld his hand before he was forced. Blessing flows where honour leads.
2. Honour costs something
It cost Abraham time, sleep, and wealth. It cost David revenge and immediate relief. Cheap honour produces cheap results.
3. Honour aligns you with God’s order
Melchizedek represented God’s priesthood. Saul represented God’s anointing. When you honour what God has set in place, you align yourself for His blessing.
5. Application: How We Honour God Today
Honour God with your Firsts
- First of your income: tithes and offerings, not leftovers.
- First of your day: time in His presence before the demands hit.
- First of your loyalty: choose His word over culture, His voice over pressure.
Honour God in People and Process
- Serve the unexpected visitor. You never know when you’re entertaining angels.
- Respect authority and divine timing, even when it’s painful. God is still writing your story.
The Promise: When you honour, God moves. He opens doors no man can shut, provides in drought, and establishes you beyond your own effort.
Conclusion thoughts on H.O.N.O.U.R. – The Secret of Blessing
H – Humble Submission to God First
Honour starts with putting God above yourself, your plans, and your rights. Proverbs 3:9 – “Honour the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops.”
Proverbs 22:4 – “Humility is the fear of the Lord; its wages are riches and honour and life.” Abraham gave firstfruits to Melchizedek. David bowed to God’s timing over his own. Blessing follows humility.
O – Open-Hearted Generosity
Honour is expressed through giving freely, not grudgingly. Proverbs 11:25 – “A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.” Proverbs 19:17 – “Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done.” Abraham’s hospitality and tithe were acts of open-handed honour. God responds to open hands with open heavens.
N – Never Despise God’s Process or Authority
Honour respects what God has established, even when it’s painful. Proverbs 21:3* – “To do what is right and just is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.” Proverbs 24:21* – “Fear the Lord and the king, my son, and do not join with rebellious officials.” David refused to touch Saul because he honoured God’s process. He chose righteousness over shortcut.
O – Observe Wisdom in Daily Choices
Honour means choosing wisdom over impulse. Proverbs 4:7-8– “The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding. Cherish her, and she will exalt you; embrace her, and she will honour you.” Proverbs 3:35 – “The wise inherit honour, but fools get only shame.” Honour is a daily decision to walk in wisdom. Wisdom then returns honour back to you.
U – Uphold Integrity When No One Is Watching
Honour is character under pressure. Proverbs 10:9 – “Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but whoever takes crooked paths will be found out.” Proverbs 20:7 – “The righteous lead blameless lives; blessed are their children after them.” David’s integrity in the cave preserved his throne. Hidden honour produces public blessing.
R – Reverence God Above All
The core of honour is the fear of the Lord. Proverbs 1:7* – “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” Proverbs 14:27 – “The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, turning a person from the snares of death.” Abraham and David both feared God more than man. That reverence unlocked covenant blessing.
Tie it back to the message
H.O.N.O.U.R. isn’t a formula for manipulating God. It’s the posture of a heart that says, “You’re worth more than this Lord and whatever you honour deserve honour.” When you live that way, Proverbs 3:10 becomes real: _“Then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.”_
6. Closing Challenge
Ask yourself: _Where have I stopped honouring God because it’s inconvenient? Blessing isn’t random. It follows honour. If you want the secret of blessing, find where you can honour God this week—and do it before He asks.
Call to Action: Identify one area—your finances, your time, your relationships—and release an act of honour today. Watch how God responds.
