"Biblical Principles and Practices for Effective Evangelism"
By Mrs Florence Michael-Aina
Christians are commanded by Jesus Christ to preach the gospel, as emphasized in Matthew 28:18–20, because a time will come when people will not endure sound doctrine. Evangelism is not optional; it is the Great Commission. To fulfill this mandate effectively, believers must understand what true biblical evangelism entails and avoid misconceptions.
Key Points:
1. Biblical Foundation – Evangelism is teaching the gospel with the aim of persuading people to believe in Christ.
2. Clarifying Misconceptions – Testimonies, apologetics, and good works support evangelism but are not evangelism themselves.
3. Core of Evangelism – It requires teaching God’s Word about who He is, humanity’s sinful state, Jesus’ redemptive work, and the call to respond.
4. Purpose – Evangelism seeks to move people from darkness to light, not just transfer information.
5. Culture of Evangelism – Evangelism thrives in a united church culture, not through isolated individual efforts.
6. Avoid Over-Reliance on Programs – Programs should not replace a genuine evangelistic lifestyle.
7. Church as God’s Design for Evangelism – The local church is central to gospel proclamation through preaching, sacraments, and fellowship.
8. Love and Unity as Witness – Love among believers and unity in the church validate our discipleship and Christ’s deity (John 13:35; John 17:20–21).
9. Spiritual Discipline – Evangelism should be intentional and consistent, rooted in prayer and gospel-centered living.
10. Leadership by Example – Pastors and elders must model evangelism and teach others to do the same.
Conclusion:
Evangelism is not just an activity but a divine mandate that reflects the heart of God. It is about sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with love, clarity, and sincerity, aiming to see people transformed by the power of the gospel. As believers, we must rise above complacency and embrace this calling with passion, prayer, and persistence. The world is in desperate need of truth, and God has entrusted us with this message of hope. Let us therefore, as individuals and as a church, cultivate a culture of evangelism—speaking the truth boldly, living out the gospel daily, and modeling Christ’s love so that many will come to know Him as Lord and Savior.
