CHURCH OF NIGERIA (ANGLICAN COMMUNION)
DATE: FRIDAY, MAY 29, 2026
TOPIC: PROOF OF POWER THROUGH HOLY GHOST BAPTISM
READ: ACTS 2:29-36

29 “Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, [a]according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne,
31 he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption.
32 This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses.
33 Therefore being exalted [b]to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear.
34 “For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself:
‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,
35 Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” ’
36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.”

THE MESSAGE:

Our text provides a powerful testament to the power of the Holy Spirit to transform lives. Peter, filled with the Spirit, delivered a profound message, connecting the events of Pentecost to the prophecies of David in Psalm 16. Peter masterfully demonstrates how the events unfolding before their eyes - the resurrection of Jesus and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit - were foretold by David centuries before. This connection strengthens the credibility of the Gospel message and underscores the sovereignty of God's plan. Peter boldly proclaimed Jesus as both Lord and Christ, emphasising His divine authority and His place at the right hand of God.

This declaration challenged the listeners to acknowledge Jesus' Lordship and repent of their sins. It further highlighted the resurrection of Jesus as the cornerstone of the Christian faith, emphasising that Jesus' resurrection is not only a historical fact but also the source of life and hope for all who believe. What we learn from this encounter is that just as the Holy Spirit empowered Peter to deliver an effective message, it empowers us today to share our faith with boldness and conviction.

PRAYER: Lord, fill me with Your Holy Spirit, and empower me to share the Gospel of Jesus with clarity and conviction. Amen.

14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say.
15 These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning!
16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
17 “‘In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
18 Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.
19 I will show wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke.
20 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.
21 And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’[a]
22 “Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know.
23 This man was handed over to you by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men,[b] put him to death by nailing him to the cross.
24 But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. 25 David said about him:
“‘I saw the Lord always before me.
Because he is at my right hand,
I will not be shaken.
26 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest in hope,
27 because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, you will not let your holy one see decay.
28 You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence

THE MESSAGE:

Our text provides a powerful account of Peter's Pentecost sermon, where he clearly explains the significance of the Spirit's outpouring. This event wasn't just a show; it marked a turning point in the history of the early Church. Peter, with the eleven, were earlier hiding behind closed doors for fear of the Jews, but the Spirit came upon them and had a positive, profitable effect on their lives and ministry. Before Pentecost, the disciples were fearful and hesitant. However, empowered by the Holy Spirit, Peter boldly addressed the surprised crowd, proclaiming the resurrection of Jesus, with conviction. This demonstrates how the Spirit equips believers with courage, enabling them to overcome fear and share their faith with the world. Peter's message was not merely a recounting of events; it was a powerful proclamation of the Gospel filled with the Spirit's anointing.

The crowd, deeply impacted by his words, were "cut to the heart" and inquired about what they should do. This shows the power of a Spirit-filled message, convicting hearts and leading to repentance. As a result of Peter's Spirit-empowered message, thousands were saved. The early Church experienced explosive growth, demonstrating the incredible impact that Spirit-filled ministry can have. This serves as a powerful reminder that the Holy Spirit is the key to effective evangelism and Church growth. To deal with fear, and to be able to stand up like Peter and remain standing amid attacks and arrows against the Christian faith in our day, the Spirit baptism is essential. We must seek the fullness of the Spirit today.

PRAYER: Lord, fill me with Your Holy Spirit, empowering me to be a bold and effective witness for You. Grant me the courage to share Your love with the world. Amen.

TOPIC: THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
READ: ACTS 2:1-13

2 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.
2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.
3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.
4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them.
5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven.
6 When they hearexplained this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken.
7 Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans?
8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language?
9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,[b]
10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome
11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!”
12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”
13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”

THE MESSAGE:

Our Lord Jesus Christ had earlier devoted quality time in teaching His disciples about the person of the Holy Spirit and His importance in believers' lives (Acts 1:4-8). During his teaching, He that being baptised with water was not all that God wanted for His children, but that they should be baptised with the Holy Ghost as well (Acts 1:4; Joel 2:28, 29 Luke 24:49). The teachings of Christ present to believers the benefits they will derive from being baptised in the Holy Ghost. The baptism of the Holy Ghost makes supernatural power available for the believers (Acts 1:8; Luke 24:49). Holy Ghost baptism releases boldness upon the believers for an effective life of witnessing for Christ (Acts 1:8; 4:31). The Holy Ghost baptism enhances the manifestations of spiritual gift in believers' life (Acts 2:1-4, 11; Joel 2:28, 29).

Our text for today serves as a guide to the possibility of spirit baptism. What God did for Christ's disciples in the upper room on the day of Pentecost can be replicated in the life God's children who thirst and hunger for righteousness and are ready to come to Him in faith (Acts 1:39; Joel 2:28; Matthew 5:6; Acts 15:8, 9). To be baptised with the Holy Ghost, the believer must be pure and thirsty, with evidence of hunger for the fullness and the power of God. He/she must also ask in faith (Matthew 5:8; John 7:37, 38; Luke 11:9-13).

PRAYER: Let Your Spirit rest upon me, O Lord.

THE DAILY FOUNTAIN
DAILY DEVOTIONAL OF THE
CHURCH OF NIGERIA (ANGLICAN COMMUNION)
DATE: TUESDAY, MAY 26, 2026
TOPIC: GUIDED BY GOD'S HAND
READ: ACTS 1:9-26

9 After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.
10 They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them.
11 “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”
12 Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day’s walk[a] from the city.
13 When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James.
14 They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.
15 In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty)
16 and said, “Brothers and sisters,[b] the Scripture had to be fulfilled in which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus.
17 He was one of our number and shared in our ministry.”
18 (With the payment he received for his wickedness, Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out.
19 Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this, so they called that field in their language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)
20 “For,” said Peter, “it is written in the Book of Psalms:
“‘May his place be deserted;
let there be no one to dwell in it,’[c]
and,
“‘May another take his place of leadership.’[d]
21 Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus was living among us,
22 beginning from John’s baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection.”
23 So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias.
24 Then they prayed, “Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen
25 to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs.”
26 Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.

THE MESSAGE:

The account in our text today describes the events following Jesus' ascension, a period of transition and uncertainty for the disciples. After witnessing Jesus ascend into heaven, the disciples were instructed to await the promised Holy Spirit, a time of preparation for the challenging mission ahead. Judas Iscariot's betrayal created a void within the group, necessitating the selection of a new apostle. Through prayer and casting of lots, Matthias was chosen, highlighting the importance of seeking God's guidance in crucial decisions. In this, we see the early Church's reliance on God's leading as they prepared for their mission. The disciples' decision to replace Judas with Matthias through prayer and casting lots, demonstrates their trust in God's sovereignty and His ability to guide their decisions.

This passage reminds us that the Church must always seek God's leading in its mission and decisions. Just as the early disciples relied on prayer and God's guidance, we, too, must prioritise seeking His will in our Church activities. By doing so, we ensure that our actions align with His purposes and that we are empowered by the Holy Spirit to fulfil our calling. Trusting in God's leading brings unity and clarity, enabling the Church to effectively carry out its mission in the world.

PRAYER: Lord, help me to patiently await Your guidance and help me to seek Your wisdom in all my decisions. Amen.

THE DAILY FOUNTAIN
DAILY DEVOTIONAL OF THE
CHURCH OF NIGERIA (ANGLICAN COMMUNION)
DATE: MONDAY, MAY 25, 2026
TOPIC: WAITING AND WITNESSING
READ: ACTS 1:1-8

1 In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach
2 until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen.
3 After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.
4 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.
5 For John baptized with[a] water, but in a few days you will be baptized with[b] the Holy Spirit.”
6 Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”
7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

THE MESSAGE:

After Jesus' ascension, the disciples, filled with anticipation and perhaps a touch of uncertainty, gathered in Jerusalem as instructed. He tells them to wait in Jerusalem for the gift of the Holy Spirit, which will empower them to be His witnesses "in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." This emphasises the importance of patience and reliance on God's timing, even when we are eager to see His plans unfold. The disciples are promised power only when the Holy Spirit came upon them. This power would equip them to be effective witnesses of Jesus, overcoming fear and sharing the Gospel with boldness. Jesus' final command is to be witnesses to Him "in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." This underscores the global scope of the Gospel and the responsibility of believers to share their faith with the world.

As believers, we need to cultivate patience and trust in God's timing as we wait for His guidance and direction. We must allow the Holy Spirit to empower us to be effective witnesses of Jesus in our daily lives and participate in the global mission of sharing the gospel with those around us.

PRAYER: Lord, help me to patiently await Your guidance, and trust in Your timing. Amen.
