ADVENT WEEK 2 SATURDAY

13-DEC-2025 Readings

All stand. The Priest (May) approaches the Altar with the ministers and venerates it while the entrance Antiphon is Sung:
FIRST READING A reading from the book of Sirach 48:1-4.9-11

In those days: Then the prophet Elijah arose like a fire, and his word burned like a torch. He brought a famine upon them, and by his zeal he made them few in number. By the word of the Lord he shut up the heavens, and also three times brought down fire. How glorious you were, O Elijah, in your wondrous deeds! And who has the right to boast which you have? You who were taken up by a whirlwind of fire, in a chariot with horses of fire; you who are ready at the appointed time, it is written, to calm the wrath of God before it breaks out in fury, to turn the heart of the father to the son, and to restore the tribes of Jacob. Blessed are those who saw you, and those who have fallen asleep in your love.

The Word of The Lord!.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:
Psalm 80

R. O God, bring us back;
let your face shine on us, and we shall be saved.

O shepherd of Israel, hear us,

enthroned on the cherubim, shine forth.

Rouse up your might and come to save us.

R. O God, bring us back;

God of hosts, turn again, we implore;

look down from heaven and see.

Visit this vine and protect it,

the vine your right hand has planted.

R. O God, bring us back;

May your hand be on the man at your right hand,

the son of man you have confirmed as your own.

And we shall never forsake you again;

give us life that we may call upon your name.

R. O God, bring us back;.

All stand to sing the Gospel Acclamation to welcome the gospel, and remain standing to honour/hear the Master Christ(Himself).

GOSPEL A reading from the holy GOSPEL according to Matthew 17:10-13

As they were coming down the mountain, the disciples asked Jesus, "Then why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?" He replied, "Elijah does come, and he is to restore all

things; but I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not know him, but did to him whatever they pleased. So also the Son of man will suffer at their hands." Then the disciples

understood that he was speaking to them of

John the Baptist.

The Gospel of The Lord!.

Reflection

The Prophet Elijah has to come before the arrival of the Messiah (Mal 3:23). This scripture the Lord Jesus graciously explains to His disciples: indeed, Elijah has come and gone, but the teachers of the law failed to recognise him and worse still, treated him badly. It is then His disciples understand that He is speaking of John the Baptist. For sure, John is not a reincarnated Elijah (John 1:21). The Sacred Magisterium in the Catechism teaches and solemnly declares that there is "no reincarnation after death" (CCC 1013). John came in the spirit and power of Elijah. People paid no heed to him as he preached repentance and heralded the coming of Christ. Like John, the long awaited Messiah has come but many of us do not yet recognise Him. We treat Him badly, behaving in a manner contradictory to His values and principles handed on to us in Scripture. Some neither love themselves nor others. If we need Christ, we must realise that His nature is love and begin to live in love with everyone around us. Lord, may Your coming renew in us the love we have wasted.

THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

08-DEC-2025 Readings

All stand. The Priest (May) approaches the Altar with the ministers and venerates it while the entrance Antiphon is Sung:
READING I Genesis 3:9-15.20

[After Adam had eaten of the tree,] the Lord God called to him and said, "Where are you?" And he said, "I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself." He said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?" The man said, "The woman who you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate." Then the Lord God said to the woman, "What is this that you have done?" The woman said, "The serpent beguiled me, and I ate." The Lord God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, cursed are you above all cattle, and above all wild animals; upon your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel."

The man called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.

The Word of The Lord!.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:
Psalm 98

R. O sing a new song to the Lord, for he has worked wonders.

O sing a new song to the Lord,

for he has worked wonders.

His right hand and his holy arm

have brought salvation.

R. O sing a new song to the Lord, for he has worked wonders.

The Lord has made known his salvation,

has shown his deliverance to the nations.

He has remembered his merciful love

and his truth for the house of Israel.

R. O sing a new song to the Lord, for he has worked wonders.

All the ends of the earth have seen

the salvation of our God.

Shout to the Lord, all the earth;

break forth into joyous song,

and sing out your praise.

R. O sing a new song to the Lord, for he has worked wonders.

SECOND READING Ephesians 1:3-6.11-12

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. He destined us in love to be his sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace which he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. In him, according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to the counsel of his will, we who first hoped in Christ have been destined and appointed to live for the

praise of his glory.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

R. ALLELUIA.
Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women.

R. ALLELUIA.

The Gospel ( All stand! )

GOSPEL Matthew 1:26-38

At that time: The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. And he came to her and said, "Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!" But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort greeting this might be. And the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there will be no end." And Mary said to the angel, "How shall this be, since I have no husband?" And the angel said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. And behold, your kinswoman Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a

son; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. For with God nothing will be impossible." And Mary said, "Behold, I am the

handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according

to your word." And the angel departed from her.

The Gospel of The Lord!.

Reflection

Some consequences of original sin are shame, alienation from God, enmity among humans and hostility between nature and humans. This situation was caused by the disobedience of Adam and Eve, our first parents. God however would not abandon humans in their state of alienation and shame. He would redeem them and restore their original status as holy and blameless children of God. In God's plan of redemption, the Son of God would become a human person to restore the human race. And for this to happen, God has prepared a woman who has found favour with Him, who will conceive and bear the "Son of the Most High". This woman is immaculate, holy, sinless, blameless, innocent, pure and full of grace. Her name is Mary. She receives this singular status through the merits of her Son, Jesus. Each of us has also regained this state of our soul at our baptism through the merits of the sufferings, death and resurrection of Christ. Is my life full of grace, holy, blameless and immaculate like that of Mary? Do I allow myself to be alienated from God through sin?

2ND READING: Romans 15:4-9

Brethren: Whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope. May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Welcome one another, therefore, as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. For I tell you that Christ became a servant to the circumcised to show God's truthfulness,
in order to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs, and in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written, "Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles,

and sing to your name".

The Gospel ( All stand! )

GOSPEL Matthew 3:1-12

In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight." Now John wore a garment of camel's hair, and a leather girdle around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey. Then went out to him Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan, and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruit that befits repentance, and do not presume to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father'; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. "I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the granary, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire."

The Gospel of The Lord!.

Reflection

St John the Baptist is a prominent figure who appears often during the Season of Advent with his powerful message. Today's GOSPEL introduces him preaching from the wilderness of Judea, living on locusts and wild honey and wearing a garment of camel's hair with a leather belt around his waist. This shows that he is a man with a mission, living a life of austerity and simplicity. But his message is stern and straight, piercing ears and hearts, exhorting people to "repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." His message is particularly directed to the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to him for baptism. There is much to be changed, and there is an urgency in the situation because the One who is going to baptise with the Holy Spirit and fire is coming soon. The Baptist's message is as relevant for us today as it was before the coming of the Messiah. Conversion is an ongoing process. There is need to repent and return to the ways of the Lord daily so that the Kingdom of God can take root and grow in us. What are the areas of my life that need to be reformed and changed? Is my way of living and acting in conformity with the values of the Kingdom?

Thus says the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel: Yes, O people in Sion who dwell at Jerusalem; you shall weep no more. He will surely be gracious to you at the sound of your cry; when he hears it, he will answer you. And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet your Teacher will not hide himself any more, but your eyes shall see your Teacher. And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, "This is the way, walk in it," when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left. And he will give rain for the seed with which you sow the ground, and grain, the produce of the ground, which will be rich and plenteous. In that day your cattle will graze in large pastures; and the oxen and the asses that till the ground will eat salted provender, which has been winnowed with shovel and fork. And upon every lofty mountain and every high hill there will be brooks running with water, in the day of the great slaughter, when the towers fall. Moreover the light of the moon will be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun will be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day when the Lord binds up the hurt of his people, and heals the wounds inflicted by his blow.

GOSPEL A reading from the holy GOSPEL according to Matthew 9:35-10:1.5.6-8

At that time: Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every infirmity. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; pray therefore the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest." And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every infirmity. These twelve Jesus sent out, charging them, "Go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And preach as you go, saying, 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand.' Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without paying, give without pay.

The Gospel of The Lord!.

Reflection

Today's GOSPEL describes the three chief activities of Jesus' mission; namely, preaching, teaching, and healing. He was the bringer of the good news that God is loving, forgiving, merciful and compassionate, and wants everyone to be saved. Jesus was the true teacher who showed through His own life God's love, mercy, forgiveness and compassion. He was a healer who spent most of His time healing people of their bodily, mental and spiritual illnesses. As Christians, we share His mission of preaching and healing. We are called to put into practice mercy, forgiveness, and unconditional love of Jesus. We are also called to be agents of healing by praying for the sick, nursing them, and helping them get the necessary medical help.

All stand. The Priest (May) approaches the Altar with the ministers and venerates it while the entrance Antiphon is Sung:
READING I A reading from the book of Isaiah 29:17-24

Thus says the Lord God: Is it not yet a very little while until Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field, and the fruitful field shall be regarded as a forest? In that day the deaf shall hear the words of a book, and out of their gloom and darkness the eyes of the blind shall see. The meek shall obtain fresh joy in the Lord, and the poor among men shall exult in the Holy One of Israel. For the ruthless shall come to nought and the scoffer cease, and all who watch to do evil shall be cut off, who by a word make a man out to be an offender, and lay a snare for him who reproves in the gate, and with an empty plea turn aside him who is in the right. Therefore thus says the Lord, who redeemed Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob: "Jacob shall no more be ashamed, no more shall his face grow pale. For when he sees his children, the work of

my hands, in his midst, they will sanctify my

name; they will sanctify the Holy One of Jacob,

and will stand in awe of the God of Israel. And those who err in spirit will come to understanding, and those who murmur will

accept instruction."

The Word of The Lord!.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:
Psalm 27

R. The Lord is my light and my salvation.

The Lord is my light and my salvation;

whom shall I fear?

The Lord is the stronghold of my life;

whom should I dread?

R. The Lord is my light and my salvation.

There is one thing I ask of the Lord,

only this do I seek:

to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,

to gaze on the beauty of the Lord,

to inquire at his temple.

R. The Lord is my light and my salvation.

I believe I shall see the Lord's goodness

in the land of the living.

Wait for the Lord; be strong;

be stouthearted, and wait for the Lord!

The Gospel ( All stand! )

GOSPEL A reading from the holy GOSPEL according to Matthew 9:27-31

At that time: As Jesus passed on, two blind men followed him, crying aloud, "Have mercy on us, Son of David." When he entered the house, the blind men came to him; and Jesus said to them, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?" They said to him, "Yes, Lord." Then he touched their eyes, saying, "According to your faith be it done to you." And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly charged them, "See that no one knows it." But they went away and spread his fame through all that district.

The Gospel of The Lord!.

Reflection

The two blind men were aware of their blindness and had an intense desire to be healed. They were passionately focused. We ourselves are often blind to our irritating traits. We are blind to the signs of God's love and care for us in the world around us. We are blind to the needs of our brothers and sisters. Our blindness also shows itself in our habit of complaining and dissatisfaction. In humility we ask for mercy from Jesus, like the two blind men, and believe that God can restore our vision to see as God sees. It will be done according to our
faith for, "To be holy is to see with the eyes of Christ."

You keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. Trust in the Lord for ever, for the Lord GOD is an everlasting rock. For he has brought low the inhabitants of the height, the lofty city. He lays it low, lays it low to the ground, casts it to the dust. At that time: Jesus said to his disciples, "Not every one who says to me, ' Lord, Lord, shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. "Every one then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house upon the rock; and the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And every one who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house upon the sand; and the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell; and great was the fall of it."

The Gospel of The Lord!.

Reflection

Spiritual maturity is not conceptual but practical. When we start to live out our faith, it slowly becomes a part of us. In Advent we prepare, not only for Christmas Day, but for something more lasting. We try to capture the Christmas spirit to make it our own. This has less to do with the atmosphere of the season and more to do with the communion we share. If we base our Christmas celebration on our experience of the Lord Jesus, it will have effects that flow into every phase of our life. Christmas is a way of life and putting its message into practice is like building on a rock; it lasts.

GOSPEL A reading from the holy GOSPEL according to Luke 10:21-24

At that hour: Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, "I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been delivered to me by my Father; and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and any one to whom the Son chooses to reveal him." Then turning to the disciples he said privately, "Blessed are the eyes which see what you see! For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it."

The Gospel of The Lord!.

Reflection

A stump is the last part of a tree that is left in the ground which naturally dies when the tree is cut down. Yet Isaiah prophesies that from the stump of Jesse shall come forth a shoot that shall blossom and flourish. In the same way, in every seemingly hopeless situation that God's children pass through, God can lift them up and make them stand out as a sign of His glory for the nations. But they must be humble and innocent as little children and promote justice and unity by their way of life.
