Guard Your Heart With All Diligence
Keep and guard your heart with all vigilance and above all that you guard, for out of it flow the springs of life. Proverbs 4:23 (AMPC)
Every believer is fully responsible for the condition of their heart, the inner battleground where the enemy seeks even the smallest foothold. Scripture warns in Ephesians 4:27 not to give the devil any space, because a single opening can quickly grow into full occupation. Guarding the heart is critical because it represents the seat of your thoughts, emotions, motivations, and the very springs of life. Your thought life shapes who you are; as Proverbs 23:7 teaches, you become what you continually think. Thoughts shape attitudes, and attitudes inevitably produce actions.
This is why your thought life must be intentionally guarded. My master mentor, Dr. Mike Murdock once observed that destiny begins with a single thought: thoughts become actions, actions form habits, habits shape character, and character ultimately determine destiny. Philippians 4:8 gives the standard for this “heart-guarding”: whatever is true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report, virtuous, and praiseworthy must be the filter for every thought that seeks entry. Anything that fails this divine checklist is unworthy of your attention and must not be allowed to settle in your heart.
ACTION STEP
Pause briefly at least twice a day to examine your thoughts and filter them through Philippians 4:8. Reject anything that doesn’t meet the standard, and intentionally replace it with a thought that does.
KEEP IN MIND
Whatever you allow to settle in your heart will eventually shape who you become.
