Holy Innocents, those around you certainly felt helpless to prevent your deaths, pray for all who feel helpless in their circumstances that they may cling to God for courage and hope. Holy Innocents, you who are now in Heaven, pray for all of us, that one day we may join you there to bask in God's love forever. Amen.

Daily Reflection, August 27, 2020
Scripture: 1 Corinthians 1:1-9
Matthew 24:42-51
Reflection:
The first line of the Gospel today says, “Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Stay awake!’ For you do not know on which day your Lord will come.'” The thought immediately hit me – yes, stay awake, but how many of us need to WAKE UP!!

I’ve been reading a book called Awareness by Fr. Anthony de Mello, an Indian Jesuit Priest. He talks a lot about waking up – and it made me realize that I need to be concerned with those things that truly impact me, my attitude, my compassion, my trust and faith in God. What do people think of me? Irrelevant. Should I concern myself with why someone looked at me cross eyed? Nope. Should I be aware of the goodness of God and all his gifts, and all the talents He has shared, and all of the mercy he has shown? WAKE UP – yes!!

So don’t let time be your enemy – stay awake and remain faithful and prudent. Take care to be in constant prayer with God, read his word, share his messages – there are so very many!! Yes, stay awake and be prepared, living your life in a way that is pleasing to God. And if you aren’t, wake up!! It’s never too late to reconnect with our loving Saviour and live as He wants you to live.

I would be remiss to not mention that today also celebrates the Memorial of St. Monica, a woman who prayed for many, many years for her son, Augustine. She stayed awake!! She never rested from praying for her son to return to the faith. The Franciscans explain, “Monica was distressed to learn that her son had accepted the Manichean heresy—’all flesh is evil’—and was living an immoral life. One night she had a vision that assured her Augustine would return to the faith. From that time on, she stayed close to her son, praying and fasting for him.” And he did return to the faith, because Momma stayed awake, and Augustine woke up.

Strength

I PERSEVERE WITH THE STRENGTH OF SPIRIT WITHIN ME.

In the Bible story of David and Goliath, David battles Goliath the giant. Despite his youth and inexperience, David declines Saul’s armor and bravely confronts the giant. Goliath has much greater physical strength, but David defeats him handily by drawing upon his God-given strength.

Like David, I may face a giant challenge that appears impossible to overcome. Yet each challenge is a chance for me to use my strength. Through prayer, meditation, and the use of affirmations, I draw upon my inner strength and face the world with fortitude. No matter the size of the giant that I face, I can persevere because I have the strength of Spirit within me.

David said, "The Lord, who saved me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, will save me from the hand of this Philistine.″ So Saul said to David, "Go, and may the Lord be with you!"—1 Samuel 17:37

MARY: THE CHANNEL OF GRACE

"Her power before God is such that she can obtain anything that we ask for, and, like any mother, she wants to answer our prayers. Like any mother, also, she knows and understands our weaknes­ses. She encourages us and makes excuses for us. She makes the way easy for us, and even when we think there is no possible solu­tion for our worry, she always has one ready to offer us."

Let us offer to our Mother today:

A visit or a conversation with a friend or relative whom we want to encourage to go to Confession.

MARY: THE QUEEN OF HEAVEN

"She lives now and is protecting us. She is there [in heaven], body and soul, with the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. She is the same person who was born in Palestine, who gave herself to God while still a child, who received the message from St. Gabriel the Ar­changel, who gave birth to our Savior, and who stood beside him at the foot of the Cross. In her, all ideals become a reality. But we should never think that this sublime greatness of hers makes her in­accessible to us. She is the one who is full of grace and the sum of all perfections . . . and she is also our Mother."
