*SETTING*
_Evidently, this *“elect lady”* and her children were piously and devoutly involved in one of the churches under Apostle John’s leadership. They had developed a strong friendship. Here we find a canonical epistle written principally, not only to an individual but also to a woman. Unlike in the old covenant, in this dispensation of the gospel, redemptive dignity and privilege are not exclusive to men, as Galatians 3:28 says… there is neither male nor female, they are both one (_the same_) in Christ. This is clear in many instances in the gospel and the epistle. Our Lord himself seized an opportunity to commune with the Samaritan woman, in order to show her the fountain of life. Also, at the cross, he instructed his beloved apostle to look after His blessed mother; thereby leaving precedence for female Christians to be regarded and respected in the faith. It was to a _lady_ that Christ chose to appear first after His resurrection. Furthermore, we find across the epistles pious and devout women raised and used by God to do great things; women like Priscilla, Phoebe, Dorcas, etc. No wonder he heroines in the Christian Faith honoured by divine providence and distinguished by divine grace should be dignified also with an apostolic epistle._
