TOPIC: FEAR GOD AND KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS

TEXT: DEUTERONOMY 5:28-33

28. "Then the LORD heard the voice of your words when you spoke to me, and the LORD said to me: 'I have heard the voice of the words of this people which they have spoken to you. They are right [in] all that they have spoken.
29. 'Oh, that they had such a heart in them that they would fear Me and always keep all My commandments, that it might be well with them and with their children forever!
30. 'Go and say to them, "Return to your tents."
31. 'But as for you, stand here by Me, and I will speak to you all the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments which you shall teach them, that they may observe [them] in the land which I am giving them to possess.'
32. "Therefore you shall be careful to do as the LORD your God has commanded you; you shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.
33. "You shall walk in all the ways which the LORD your God has commanded you, that you may live and [that it may be] well with you, and [that] you may prolong [your] days in the land which you shall possess.

MESSAGE:
In Deuteronomy 5:22 27, the Israelites requested to hear God through Moses rather than hearing directly from God. They feared the voice of God that spoke through the fire. God however granted their request even though that was not His original plan for them. Let us understand that God may allow us His permissive will, but that cannot be compared to His perfect will for our lives. God also commanded that they should fear Him always and keep all His commandments. This injunction was for their welfare and that of their children in the land they were entering to take possession. Secondly, their long life was guaranteed if they obeyed.

Beloved, the same thing applies to us who are of the new covenant order today. To fear God implies to obey the whole counsel of God, not only the ones we like. Ecclesiastes 12:13 says: "Fear God and keep His commandment for this is the whole duty of man." Let us note that to love God means to keep His commands and these commands are not burdensome (1 Johns:3). His work is easy and His burden light (Matt. 11:28). We only need to obey for our own good.

PRAYER:
Grant me, dear Lord, the desire to obey You always.

TOPIC: THE WISE STILL SEEK AND WORSHIP JESUS

TEXT: MATTHEW 2:1-22

1. Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem,
2. saying, "Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him."
3. When Herod the king heard [this,] he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
4. And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.
5. So they said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written by the prophet:
6. 'But you, Bethlehem, [in] the land of Judah, Are not the least among the rulers of Judah; For out of you shall come a Ruler Who will shepherd My people Israel.' "
7. Then Herod, when he had secretly called the wise men, determined from them what time the star appeared.
8. And he sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and search carefully for the young Child, and when you have found [Him,] bring back word to me, that I may come and worship Him also."
9. When they heard the king, they departed; and behold, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came and stood over where the young Child was.
10. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy.
11. And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
12. Then, being divinely warned in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed for their own country another way.
13. Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, "Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him."
14. When he arose, he took the young Child and His mother by night and departed for Egypt,
15. and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, "Out of Egypt I called My Son."
16. Then Herod, when he saw that he was deceived by the wise men, was exceedingly angry; and he sent forth and put to death all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all its districts, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the wise men.
17. Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying:
18. "A voice was heard in Ramah, Lamentation, weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping [for] her children, Refusing to be comforted, Because they are no more."
19. But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,
20. saying, "Arise, take the young Child and His mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the young Child's life are dead."
21. Then he arose, took the young Child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel.
22. But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea instead of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. And being warned by God in a dream, he turned aside into the region of Galilee.

MESSAGE:
When Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem in Judea, wise men from the east saw His star in their place and came to Jerusalem to worship Him. Jesus' star appearing in the East indicates that He is not only the Messiah for the Jews but also for the Gentiles. When these men arrived in Jerusalem, they went to Herod and asked where the new king of the Jews had been born. Herod inquired from Jewish leaders who immediately provided an answer from the scriptures thus; Bethlehem in Judea (v.9). As soon as they came out to proceed on their journey, the star they had seen in the East appeared and led them to the very place where Mary and the child Jesus were and stopped. God still leads His children today safely to their destinations if they follow Him faithfully. On seeing the mother and child, they were overjoyed, bowed down and worshiped Him with gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh. These gifts signifies the identity of Jesus with the Gold representing Royalty; the Frankincense the gift for Duty. and the Myrrh was a spice used to anoint body for burial. Are you wise? Seek and worship Jesus with sacrificial gifts for who He is, and for His blessings in your life.

PRAYER:
Oh God, give me the zeal to seek and worship You.

DATE: WEDNESDAY 26TH MAY, 2021

TOPIC: COSTLY ASSUMPTION

TEXT: DEUTERONOMY 5:22-27

22. " These words the LORD spoke to all your assembly, in the mountain from the midst of the fire, the cloud, and the thick darkness, with a loud voice; and He added no more. And He wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me.
23. " So it was, when you heard the voice from the midst of the darkness, while the mountain was burning with fire, that you came near to me, all the heads of your tribes and your elders.
24. "And you said: 'Surely the LORD our God has shown us His glory and His greatness, and we have heard His voice from the midst of the fire. We have seen this day that God speaks with man; yet he [still] lives.
25. 'Now therefore, why should we die? For this great fire will consume us; if we hear the voice of the LORD our God anymore, then we shall die.
26. 'For who [is there] of all flesh who has heard the voice of the living God speaking from the midst of the fire, as we [have,] and lived?
27. 'You go near and hear all that the LORD our God may say, and tell us all that the LORD our God says to you, and we will hear and do [it.']

MESSAGE:
Moses reminded the Israelites of how God gave them the
commandments by speaking through the fire and how finally he wrote them on tablets of stone and handed them over to him. The reason for inscribing the commandments on the tablets was to constantly remind them of the laws anytime they saw God's fingerprints on the stones. For us believers, the commandments are written in our hearts within us so that we can easily comply through the prompting of the Holy Spirit.

Note in verses 23 -27, that the Israel's leaders and elders told Moses that they didn't want to hear from God directly because they would die. They were afraid of death and told Moses to hear and tell them what God said. This was "a costly assumption prompted by fear. Did they die in the first instance when they hear God from the fire? The answer is No! Even their testimony in verse 26 contradicts their request. Sometimes, some of us, out of fear, run away from the presence of God/His word only to meet deceitful "men of God/prophets' and believe their lies. Be careful to hear. read and meditate on the word of God. This day, God speaks to us through Jesus Christ (Heb. 1:3) and we shall not die if we hear Him.

PRAYER:
Dear Lord, deliver me from fears that tend to remove me from Your presence.

TOPIC: LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOURS AS YOURSELF

TEXT: DEUTERONOMY 5:16-21

16. Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may be well with you in the land which the LORD your God is giving you.
17. You shall not murder.
18. You shall not commit adultery.
19. You shall not steal.
20. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
21. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife; and you shall not desire your neighbor's house, his field, his male servant, his female servant, his ox, his donkey, or anything that [is] your neighbor's.

MESSAGE:
Our text for today deals with six commandments in the covenant relationship between Israel and God and all of them centre on our relationship with our neighbour. They include:
honour your father and mother you shall not commit adultery you shall not steal you shall not bear false witness against your neighbour you shall not covet.

Which of these commandments do you find difficult to keep?

In the new covenant order, Christ summed them up to LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOUR AS YOURSELF (Mk 12:31). He equally expanded on some of them, for instance, you shall not murder which he upgraded to a level whereby being angry with your brother makes you a murderer. Secondly, when one looks at a woman lustfully, he has committed adultery with her (Matt. 5:22 and 28). The fifth commandment has a promise of long life attached to it. How do you honour your parents? You must respect them for Christ pays serious attention to the peace and progress of our families.

Beloved, we have an obligation to keep all the
the commandments by the help of the Holy Spirit. If we fail in one, then we have failed in all (James 2:10). Jesus came to fulfil them and not to abolish them.

PRAYER:
Lord help me to love my neighbour as myself.

DATE: MONDAY 24TH MAY, 2021

TOPIC: OBSERVE THE SABBATH DAY

TEXT: DEUTERONOMY 5:12-15

12. ' Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the LORD your God commanded you.
13. Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
14. but the seventh day [is] the Sabbath of the LORD your God. [In it] you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your ox, nor your donkey, nor any of your cattle, nor your stranger who [is] within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you.
15. And remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out from there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm; therefore the LORD your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.

MESSAGE:
The fourth commandment in the covenant relationship between God and Israel is to keep the Sabbath day. Sabbath is the seventh day of the week, a holy day on which no work was permitted. It was a day of worship and rest for the Jews.

The Lord commanded His people to observe that day for some reasons:
He finished the work of creation in six days and rested on the seventh day (Gen. 2:2);
To allow individual men and maid servants, strangers animals to rest from physical activities (v.14);
To remind Israel of how He delivered them from their bo***ge in Egypt.

Today as New Covenant believers, we observe Sunday the first day of the week as our day of rest. This is to remind us of the day that Jesus rose from the dead and had victory over death. It is a day of worship and honour to God and rest from our physical work. As we observe Sundays as days of rest, we must understand that this rest goes beyond the physical. There is yet another rest (Heb. 4:9) which is ultimate and found in Christ through the new birth. (Matt. 11:28-29).

PRAYER:
Lord, strengthen me to keep the Sabbath in Jesus name. Amen.

DATE: SUNDAY 23RD MAY, 2021 (THE DAY OF PENTECOST/WHIT SUNDAY)

TOPIC: THE HOLY SPIRIT AND HIS MINISTRY

TEXT: JOHN 20:19-31

19. Then, the same day at evening, being the first [day] of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, "Peace [be] with you."
20. When He had said this, He showed them [His] hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.
21. So Jesus said to them again, "Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you."
22. And when He had said this, He breathed on [them,] and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit.
23. "If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the [sins] of any, they are retained."
24. Now Thomas, called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came.
25. The other disciples therefore said to him, "We have seen the Lord." So he said to them, "Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe."
26. And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, "Peace to you!"
27. Then He said to Thomas, "Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand [here,] and put [it] into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing."
28. And Thomas answered and said to Him, "My Lord and my God!"
29. Jesus said to him, "Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed [are] those who have not seen and [yet] have believed."
30. And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book;
31. but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.

MESSAGE:
Jesus Christ while on earth spent time to teach His disciples about the Holy Spirit and His ministry. In John 16:7, He made the promise of sending the Holy Spirit when He would go away. In today's passage, He fulfilled the promise saying "receive the Holy Spirit" (v.20). The Holy Spirit would enable the disciples to accomplish the great commission. We also need to be filled with the Holy Spirit in order to accomplish kingdom services. The scripture calls him the Helper, Teacher and Counsellor (Jn 14:26).

Today is Whit sunday in our communion and reminds us of the day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples, and empowered them for service. In verses 19-21, Jesus met His disciples physically in a closed room where they were besieged with fear; a proof that He is alive and alive even today. He released His peace to them even as He does to us in our troubled lives and situations today. In verses 24-30, Jesus condemned the unbelief of Thomas who doubted His resurrection. We must not be like Thomas, but live to believe the risen Christ and every word of God. It is more blessed to do so.

PRAYER:
Fill me with Your Holy Spirit O Lord.

TOPIC: HEAR, LEARN AND OBSERVE

TEXT: DEUTERONOMY 5:1-11

1. And Moses called all Israel, and said to them: "Hear, O Israel, the statutes and judgments which I speak in your hearing today, that you may learn them and be careful to observe them.
2. "The LORD our God made a covenant with us in Horeb.
3. "The LORD did not make this covenant with our fathers, but with us, those who [are] here today, all of us who [are] alive.
4. "The LORD talked with you face to face on the mountain from the midst of the fire.
5. "I stood between the LORD and you at that time, to declare to you the word of the LORD; for you were afraid because of the fire, and you did not go up the mountain. [He] said:
6. ' I [am] the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bo***ge.
7. ' You shall have no other gods before Me.
8. ' You shall not make for yourself a carved image -- any likeness [of anything] that [is] in heaven above, or that [is] in the earth beneath, or that [is] in the water under the earth;
9. you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD your God, [am] a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth [generations] of those who hate Me,
10. but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
11. ' You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold [him] guiltless who takes His name in vain.

MESSAGE:
In today's passage, Moses spoke to all Israel as they were about to enter the Promised Land. He reminded them of the covenant they had with God at Horeb through the Ten Commandments: In verses 1-3, Moses drew their attention to the need to hear, learn and observe the commandments which were given to them and not their forefathers. He further reminded them about the mediatory part he played and how God delivered them from Egypt.

The new covenant believers must also hear, learn, observe and obey the whole word of God for our good. Jesus Christ is our Mediator in the New Covenant and has delivered us from the slavery of sin. Verses 8 & 11 state the first and second commandments which center on reverence for God. By implication, nothing should compete with God in our lives, be it money, power, carved images, technological gadgets, etc., because He is a jealous God. Note that obedience and disobedience to the commandments have their blessings and consequences
respectively to the third and fourth generations. Let us therefore choose to obey and be blessed with our generations.

PRAYER:
Lord, create a desire in me to hear, learn and observe your word always in Jesus 'Name. Amen.

THE DAILY FOUNTAIN DAILY DEVOTIONAL GUIDE OF THE CHURCH OF NIGERIA (ANGLICAN COMMUNION)

DATE: FRIDAY 21ST MAY, 2021

TOPIC: NATIONAL IDENTITY

TEXT: DEUTERONOMY 4:44-49

44. Now this [is] the law which Moses set before the children of Israel.
45. These [are] the testimonies, the statutes, and the judgments which Moses spoke to the children of Israel after they came out of Egypt,
46. on this side of the Jordan, in the valley opposite Beth Peor, in the land of Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon, whom Moses and the children of Israel defeated after they came out of Egypt.
47. And they took possession of his land and the land of Og king of Bashan, two kings of the Amorites, who [were] on this side of the Jordan, toward the rising of the sun,
48. from Aroer, which [is] on the bank of the River Arnon, even to Mount Sion (that is, Hermon),
49. and all the plain on the east side of the Jordan as far as the Sea of the Arabah, below the slopes of Pisgah.

MESSAGE:
Having come out of Egypt, there was need that Israel should be taught the laws, decrees and orders of their God. Israel is a unique Nation chosen by God among all the Nations of the earth; they had been in the midst of a nation that did not know their God. Again, they were surrounded by nations that served many gods. There was therefore the need that having come out and now in the Promised Land, their National history and identity should be introduced to them. Their culture and tradition should be clearly spelt out to them, for it is by this that they would relate with God, with one another and with other nations. Their identity - culture - is based on the laws of God. It is pertinent to note that till today, the laws that guide Israel are the laws of God as written in the Scriptures.

As believers today, our identity is given by the word of God (Deut. 6:4; Mk. 12:29). Our culture, practices and traditions that mark us out as a people are based on the word of God (Ps. 119:105). Anywhere we are, in any part of the world, we should recognize this and live by it.

PRAYER:
Lord, teach us Your ways and give us grace to follow Your dictates in this nation in Jesus Name. Amen.

TOPIC: CITIES OF REFUGE

TEXT: DEUTERONOMY 4:41-43

41. Then Moses set apart three cities on this side of the Jordan, toward the rising of the sun,
42. that the manslayer might flee there, who kills his neighbor unintentionally, without having hated him in time past, and that by fleeing to one of these cities he might live:
43. Bezer in the wilderness on the plateau for the Reubenites, Ramoth in Gilead for the Gadites, and Golan in Bashan for the Manassites.

MESSAGE:
In Deuteronomy 19:1 - 7 and Numbers 35:11 - 34, as in today's passage, we see the wisdom, justice and mercy of God. Three cities were to be designated cities of refuge. Clear explanations were given for those who had a right to flee to the cities of refuge. There was a difference between a manslayer and a murderer if they accidentally killed someone. He was the one qualified to run to the city of refuge. Manslayer was someone who unintentionally slayed someone and must flee to the city of refuge to save his life. A murderer was one who intentionally killed someone. Other laws applied to the murderer, the avenger of blood could slay the murderer on the spot.

God does not encourage jungle justice. There are channels provided by Him to determine a case before judgment is meted out. This is the reason we have elders in the church. The law courts are there too in the wider society and we need to earnestly pray for the judicial system in our country. The judiciary is supposed to be the last hope of the common man. It is supposed to be a kind of city of refuge to which any person who is unjustly pursued can run to and obtain justice. On the other hand, Jesus is our City of Refuge, our Advocate, (1 Jn. 2:1-2). Let us run to Him for safety.

PRAYER:
Pray earnestly for the judicial system in our country.

TOPIC: ACKNOWLEDGE GOD

TEXT: DEUTERONOMY 4:32-40

32. " For ask now concerning the days that are past, which were before you, since the day that God created man on the earth, and [ask] from one end of heaven to the other, whether [any] great [thing] like this has happened, or [anything] like it has been heard.
33. "Did [any] people [ever] hear the voice of God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as you have heard, and live?
34. "Or did God [ever] try to go [and] take for Himself a nation from the midst of [another] nation, by trials, by signs, by wonders, by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, and by great terrors, according to all that the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?
35. "To you it was shown, that you might know that the LORD Himself [is] God; [there is] none other besides Him.
36. "Out of heaven He let you hear His voice, that He might instruct you; on earth He showed you His great fire, and you heard His words out of the midst of the fire.
37. "And because He loved your fathers, therefore He chose their descendants after them; and He brought you out of Egypt with His Presence, with His mighty power,
38. "driving out from before you nations greater and mightier than you, to bring you in, to give you their land [as] an inheritance, as [it is] this day.
39. "Therefore know this day, and consider [it] in your heart, that the LORD Himself [is] God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; [there is] no other.
40. "You shall therefore keep His statutes and His commandments which I command you today, that it may go well with you and with your children after you, and that you may prolong [your] days in the land which the LORD your God is giving you for all time."

MESSAGE:
The Lord our God takes delight in showing His power through man whom He created in His own image. The greatness of God is manifested through man in verse 35 & 39 of our passage. The Lord said, "You are shown these things so that you might know that the Lord is God: beside Him there is no other: "Acknowledge and take to heart this day that the Lord is God in heaven above and on earth below. There is no other. It grieves God when we fail to acknowledge Him in all aspects of our lives and when we give His glory to ourselves, other men, idols or any other thing. He wants us to acknowledge the fact that beside Him, there is no other.

We acknowledge Him by keeping His decrees and
commands and obeying His ministers (vv. 39 & 40; 2 Chron.
20:20). We also acknowledge God by telling others about Him. This is the secret of success. It attracts generational blessings. Let us learn to acknowledge God in everything we do in business, government work, studies, family, Church, village meetings, etc., and we shall experience abundant prosperity and God's special favour in all we do.

PRAYER:
Inspire us always Oh Lord to see You in all we do in Jesus name. Amen.

DAILY FOUNTAIN DEVOTIONAL
Date: 2021-May-18

TOPIC: CONSEQUENCES OF IDOLATRY

TEXT: Deuteronomy 4:25-31(NKJV)
25. " When you beget children and grandchildren and have grown old in the land, and act corruptly and make a carved image in the form of anything, and do evil in the sight of the LORD your God to provoke Him to anger,
26. "I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that you will soon utterly perish from the land which you cross over the Jordan to possess; you will not prolong [your] days in it, but will be utterly destroyed.
27. "And the LORD will scatter you among the peoples, and you will be left few in number among the nations where the LORD will drive you.
28. "And there you will serve gods, the work of men's hands, wood and stone, which neither see nor hear nor eat nor smell.
29. "But from there you will seek the LORD your God, and you will find [Him] if you seek Him with all your heart and with all your soul.
30. "When you are in distress, and all these things come upon you in the latter days, when you turn to the LORD your God and obey His voice
31. '(for the LORD your God [is] a merciful God), He will not forsake you nor destroy you, nor forget the covenant of your fathers which He swore to them.

STUDY: Joys can quickly be cut short and turned into sorrow when people persist in idolatry. Imagine the pains, frustrations and sorrows it could cause after long years of journey through the wilderness, and finally crossing Jordan to the Promised Land only to perish there (v. 26). "I call heaven and earth as witness against you that you will quickly perish from the Land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess. You will not live there long but will certainly be destroyed." This prophecy in this text certainly haunted those Israelites who were carried away years later into the Assyrian and Babylonian captivities. There was however an encouragement that if they returned to God, He (God) would still receive them because of His covenant with their forefathers.
Many of God's children are suffering because of diverse kinds of idolatry (Col. 3:5). Many of our church members are persisting in various forms of idolatry embedded in many cultural and traditional practices (4:5). In other instances, information technology gadgets, businesses, games, etc., have been allowed to take over our personal altars with God. There is a call to return to
God in totality and serve Him only. Let us rid ourselves of every form of idolatry and devote ourselves only to the Lord. He will heal and restore us.

PRAYER: Merciful Lord, deliver us from idolatry.
