Topic: Know Your God
Main Text: Daniel 11:32 — “But the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.”
Introduction:
Knowing God is more than knowing about God. Many people know about God through what they have heard from parents, pastors, teachers, or friends. But God desires us to have a personal relationship with Him.
WHY SHOULD YOU KNOW YOUR GOD?
1. Knowing God gives you eternal life - John 17:3
2. Knowing God helps you to overcome fear - Psalms 27:1
3. Knowing God helps you to recognize His voice - John 10:27
4. Knowing God will save you from deception
5. Knowing God gives you confidence in time of trouble.
There is a great difference between saying, “I have heard about God,” and saying, “I know my God.”
Job declared in Job 42:5: “I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee.”
The more we know God, the stronger our faith becomes. When we know who God is, we can trust Him even when circumstances are difficult.
1. Who Is God?
God is our Creator.
Genesis 1:1 — “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” Everything we have comes from Him. He created us, sustains us, and gives us life.
God is also our Father.
2 Corinthians 6:18 — “And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters.”
He is not a distant God. He desires fellowship with His children.
God is holy.
Isaiah 6:3 — “Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts.”
Therefore, knowing God should influence the way we live. We cannot claim to know a holy God and deliberately continue in a life of sin.
2. Knowing God Is Different From Knowing About God
You can know facts about a person without actually knowing that person.
You may know someone's name, occupation, family background, and achievements, yet never have a relationship with them.
In the same way, someone can know Bible verses, attend church, sing Christian songs, and still lack a personal relationship with God.
Knowing God involves relationship, fellowship, obedience, and trust.
Paul said:
Philippians 3:10 — “That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection…”
Paul already knew Christ, but he wanted to know Him more deeply.
Ask yourself:
Do I really know God?
Do I seek Him when nobody is watching?
Do I trust Him during difficult times?
Do I obey His Word?
Is my relationship with God growing?
3. How Can We Know God?
A. Through His Word
The Bible reveals God's character, His promises, His plans, and His will.
John 5:39 — “Search the scriptures…”
If you want to know God, spend time studying His Word.
You cannot consistently know God's heart while neglecting God's Word.
B. Through Prayer
Prayer is communication with God.
When we pray, we speak to God, but we also learn to listen to Him.
Jeremiah 33:3 — “Call unto me, and I will answer thee…”
A person who knows God will develop a prayer life.
C. Through Obedience
Jesus said:
John 14:15 — “If ye love me, keep my commandments.”
Obedience demonstrates that our relationship with God is genuine.
You cannot claim to know God while continually rejecting His instructions.
D. Through Experience
There are things about God that you will learn only by walking with Him.
You discover that He is faithful when you trust Him.
You discover that He provides when you depend on Him.
You discover that He comforts when you are broken.
You discover that He gives strength when you are weak.
Some things about God can only be learned through experience.
4. Those Who Know Their God Shall Be Strong
Daniel 11:32 says:
“The people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.”
Notice that Scripture does not merely say those who know about God shall be strong.
It says those who know their God.
When you know God, you develop spiritual strength.
When storms come, you will not easily give up.
When people disappoint you, you will still trust God.
When doors close, you will believe God can open another door.
When you face opposition, you will remember that God is greater than your opposition.
5. Those Who Know God Will Do Exploits
The second part of Daniel 11:32 says:
“…and do exploits.”
Knowing God produces courage, faith, and effectiveness.
David knew his God, so he could stand before Goliath.
Moses knew his God, so he could stand before Pharaoh.
Daniel knew his God, so he could continue praying even when prayer became dangerous.
The three Hebrew men knew their God, so they could stand before the fiery furnace and declare that God was able to deliver them.
Peter and John knew their God, and ordinary men became bold witnesses for Christ.
The lesson is simple:
When you know your God, you will not be intimidated by your circumstances.
6. What Happens When You Know God?
You will have confidence.
Psalm 27:1 — “The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?”
You will have peace.
Isaiah 26:3 — “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee…”
You will have strength.
Isaiah 40:31 — “But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength…”
You will have courage.
You will be able to say, “If God is for me, who can be against me?”
You will become a witness.
The more you know God, the more you will desire others to know Him.
7. What Can Prevent Us From Knowing God?
- Sin can separate us from fellowship with God.
- Distractions can take our attention away from God.
- Pride can make us think we do not need God.
- Lack of prayer weakens our relationship with Him.
- Neglect of God's Word keeps us spiritually ignorant.
- Worldly dependence can cause us to trust money, people, position, or possessions more than God.
- We must make knowing God our priority.
8. Make Knowing God Your Greatest Pursuit
Paul counted everything else as loss compared with knowing Christ.
Philippians 3:8 — “Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord…”
The greatest achievement in life is not merely to become wealthy, famous, educated, or successful.
The greatest achievement is to know God.
One day, earthly possessions will pass away. Positions will change. Fame will disappear. But our relationship with God has eternal value.
Conclusion:
Beloved, the question today is not:
“Do you attend church?”
It is not merely:
“Do you know the Bible?”
The deeper question is:
“Do you know your God?”
When you know your God:
- You will trust Him.
- You will obey Him.
- You will pray to Him.
- You will stand for Him.
- You will remain faithful to Him.
- You will be strong in difficult times.
- You will do exploits for His kingdom.
Know your God. Seek Him. Walk with Him. Trust Him. Serve Him.
And when the storms of life come, you will be able to say:
“I know whom I have believed.” — 2 Timothy 1:12
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, help us to know You more deeply. Take away every distraction, sin, and spiritual blindness that prevents us from knowing You. Give us a hunger for Your Word, a deeper prayer life, and a heart that obeys You. Make us strong in faith and courageous in service. Help us to do exploits for Your kingdom and to remain faithful until the end. In Jesus' mighty name, Amen.
