An interesting thing happens in the 27th
chapter of 1 Chronicles—something that
seems rather boring at first, but (as I’ve
discovered again and again while reading
God’s Word under the guidance of His Holy
Spirit) then comes, as my friend calls it, the
“aha moment,” the moment of godly
realization.
Starting with verse 25, we find a list of
names and the positions each man held in
David’s kingdom. The list includes many
highly regarded positions like supervisor of
the palace treasuries, supervisor of the
king’s field workers, supervisor of the king’s
vineyards, supervisor of the king’s olive
groves, supervisor of the king’s cattle, his
camels, his donkeys, his sheep, etc.
The list then goes on to name the officials of
King David’s court: his counselor, his royal
advisor, his son’s teacher, and then, in verse
33, comes the one that really caught my
attention—the “aha moment.” It reads, “…
Hushai the Arkite was the king’s
friend” (NLT).
WOW! The king’s friend! In a list of court
officers and other high-ranking officials of
the kingdom of Israel, Hushai is listed as the
king’s friend.
This got me to thinking about God. How
much better to be called a friend of God than
to be called His teacher, His preacher, or His
money keeper.
I’ve given this passage a lot of thought
recently, and I keep coming to the same
conclusion: No matter what titles I may
obtain in this world—son, husband, father,
leader, pastor, even president—I can’t think
of a better title than friend of God.
