THE OBEDIENCE OF NOAH (3)

“These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.” Genesis 6:9

MESSAGE
Can you imagine what must have gone through Noah’s mind when God told him to build a massive boat in the middle of a desert? Maybe Noah wondered if he had misheard. But we already know that Noah did everything just as God commanded him (Genesis 6:22). And he did it because he ‘was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.’ (Genesis 6:9).

Walking takes place step by step. But we tend to want God to show us the second step before we have taken the first. We are scared of the unfamiliar, and we will only trust God as far as we can see. If we don’t trust God completely, we hesitate to take the leap of faith that He is asking us to make. But if we put all our confidence and trust in Him, it doesn’t matter if we are nervous and can’t see where we are being led, we will take that leap of faith with Him, allowing Him to guide us and trusting Him for the next step. We are called to ‘walk by faith, not by sight’ (2 Corinthians 5:7). Even if we can’t see the next step, God can. We just need to trust Him.

ACTION POINT
🖋️What task is God asking you to do? If it seems too daunting, or you are not sure where to begin, start by asking Him to show you the very first step you need to take. Then trust that He’ll show you the next steps when you need to know them.

SCRIPTURES
2 Corinthians 5:7; 2 Corinthians 4:18; Hebrews 11:1

PRAYER POINTS
1. Father, I thank You for always guiding my life;

2. I commit my ways into your hand, help me to follow Your lead in the name of Jesus;

3. Father, instruct me in the way to go and guide me with Your eyes in the name of Jesus;

DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT (2)

“But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness.” 1 Timothy 4:7

MESSAGE
When writing to the church in Laodicea, John said: ‘So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:’ (Revelation 3:16-17).

These seem like harsh words, but they can often apply to us too. We can become lukewarm in our faith, we lose our passion for God and our spiritual life becomes mundane and stationary. But that is not how God wants us to be. We need to be growing our faith, and moving forwards. The Bible says: ‘But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness. For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.’ (1 Timothy 4:7-8).

Just as athletes need to keep training in order to stay fit and healthy, we need to keep training ourselves to be spiritually fit and healthy. So when we recognise that we have let our faith become lukewarm, we need to do something about it. Spiritual growth is about progress, not perfection. We can work on it little by little, God does not expect us to be able to have strong and passionate faith immediately. He’s willing to work with us as we begin to exercise it again.

So we need to stop procrastinating and avoid perfectionism. But how can we exercise in God? We can devote more time to building our relationship with Him through prayer, reading the Bible, worshipping and spending time with other Christians. When we come to Him, He comes to us. ‘Come near to God and he will come near to you’ (James 4:8). And He can take our cold hearts and set them on fire for Him again.

ACTION POINT
🖋️Each day for the next one week, do something to build your faith and relationship with God.

SCRIPTURES
James 4:8; 2 Peter 3:18; Romans 12:1-2

PRAYER POINTS
1. Lord, thank You for saving me;

2. Father, help me to identify the actions I need to take and help me to do them in the name of Jesus;

3. Lord, show me opportunities to grow in my relationship with You in the name of Jesus.

APPROVE EXCELLENT THINGS

“That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ’ Philippians 1:10

MESSAGE
People tend to be easily influenced by their friends, their environment, their religion or their occupation. As believers, however, we have to be careful as to what we allow to influence our lives. We cannot afford to live by worldly philosophies but by the Word of God.

In the world, you may hear things like a tooth for a tooth and an eye for an eye which our Lord Jesus Christ forbids (Matthew 5:38-40). You may also hear of ideas like jungle justice, “if you can’t beat them, join them”, etc. All these ideologies are not of God. As a child of God you ought not to agree with them.

Apostle Paul in the Bible warns us to beware of scientific laws and wrong philosophies in Colossians 2:8. As a believer, we ought to approve of things that are excellent. A good example of these things is written for us in Philippians 4:8 which tells us to only think about and approve of things that are: Honest, Right, Pure, Lovely, Good report, Virtue (Morally excellent) and Praise worthy. Don’t give in when many go wrong. The majority doesn’t approve right because of the spirit controlling the environment. Only God’s Word is right.

ACTION POINT
🖋️Never subject yourself to be influenced by your environment or tradition; let God’s Word mould you into the image of Christ.

SCRIPTURES
Philippians 4:8; Daniel 1:7-8; Colossians 2:8

PRAYER POINTS
1. Pray for the Spirit of excellence.

2. Pray for the Spirit of boldness to withstand any wrong doctrines of evil men.

3. Pray for your faith to stand strong and never to be compromised.

WISH EVERYONE WELL

“Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth” Proverbs 24:17

MESSAGE
Has it ever happened to you that someone else achieves something and you start feeling unhappy about it? Maybe you wanted that success for yourself, or maybe you feel threatened and insecure because that person has done something better than you. Well, that’s not how God wants us to react. The Bible tells us to ‘rejoice with those who rejoice’ (Romans 12:15).

We need to be celebrating people’s success, not resenting them because of it. And that includes celebrating the successes of those who have hurt us or the people we really don’t get on with. That can be pretty challenging. When we are feeling hurt, betrayed or disappointed, it can be tempting to want that person to fail. There is something in watching them fail that seems to make us feel better about the situation. But that’s not how we’re called to live.

In the Book of Proverbs, Solomon says: “Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth” (Proverbs 24:17). We shouldn’t be wishing failure on those who have hurt us, instead we should be praying that they will be blessed. When we are hurting, that can seem unfair. We can wonder why we should pray for blessing on someone who has hurt us. But God knows the whole situation, He sees everything, even the parts not known to any man so we can hand everything over to Him.

ACTION POINT
🖋️Is there someone who you struggle to get along with? Ask God to bless that person today.

SCRIPTURES
Romans 12:15; Proverbs 17:5; Obadiah 1:12

PRAYER POINTS

2. Lord, grant me the grace to forgive those who offend me in the name of Jesus.

SHOWING COMPASSION TO OTHERS

“Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy. Deliver the poor and needy: rid them out of the hand of the wicked.” Psalm 82:3–4

MESSAGE
Compassion literally means “to suffer with.” God calls us to relate with people who are suffering and suffer with them so they are not alone. It does not mean that we can fix the problem, but it does mean we can enter into their pain. Before we act on or practice this belief, we must believe it is God’s call on the life of all Christ’s followers. When we believe this in our heart, we will show compassion to all people, especially to those in need.

Throughout history God has graciously shown compassion for His people, with the ultimate demonstration being the sacrifice of His only Son, Jesus Christ. The only just response to the sins of humankind was death and so our just God, according to His righteousness, issued the death penalty on us. However, out of His great compassion, He offered Jesus to take humanity’s place (Luke 10:25-37).

If we follow the example God has given us in Christ Jesus and choose to show compassion to people as God does to us, we will change our priorities and how we use our time. We will be free to give to others, because we will trust God for our needs. People who have been forgotten by society will be cared for and restored. We will truly reach our neighborhoods and our cities. The Spirit of Christ will be alive and well in our lives. Indeed, people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.

ACTION POINT
🖋️Make a resolution to be compassionate to someone today.

SCRIPTURES
Luke 10:25–37; Psalm 41:1; Jeremiah 22:16

PRAYER POINTS
1. Father, thank You for showing humanity the greatest act of compassion.

2. I receive fresh grace to be compassionate today in the name of Jesus.

3. Father, let Your love manifest through my life as compassion in the name of Jesus.

CHILDREN OF GOD

“but As Many As Received Him, To Them Gave He Power To Become The Sons Of God, Even To Them That Believe On His Name:” John 1:12

MESSAGE
The beautiful thing about God’s kingdom is that all those who welcome Jesus as their Lord are given the opportunity to accept a new identity through Him. This is illustrated through the story of a crooked tax collector named Zacchaeus. Tax collectors were among the most despised people in Israel because they chose to work for Rome and were making themselves rich by extorting their fellow Jews. But Zaccheaus shows that even the lost can be adopted and made new (Luke 19:1-9).

Now that Zaccheus is part of the family of God, Jesus treated him the same way He would treat other children of God, in spite of how bad their past might have been. We must emulate this. John said, “But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name” (John 1:12). In other words, we are all significant because of our position as children of God.

This should make a difference in the way we live. It will cause us to start seeing people as God sees them. We will value all human life. We will see and treat all people the way God sees and treats them. And we will be compelled to tell all people about Jesus.

ACTION POINT
🖋️Treat people the way God will treat them.

SCRIPTURES
Matthew 7:12; Romans 8:14-16; Galatians 3:26; 1 John 3:1

PRAYER POINTS

YOU NEED HELP, TOO

“Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.” Exodus 18:18

MESSAGE
While the bible encourages us to help others and to care about the interests of the others, not just our own (Philippians 2:4), the truth is that we sometimes take this too far. We try to be everything for everyone, seeing it as our responsibility to help everyone with their problems. And that can be dangerous because we can end up feeling overwhelmed and exhausted.

Instead, we need to remember that we’re part of the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:12-31). Therefore, even though all of us have a responsibility to be there for other people, we can all offer different things. Sometimes God will use us to help others, other times He will use someone else. It doesn’t always have to be us.

Moses had to learn this when he was leading the Israelites. Moses was wearing himself out physically, emotionally, and spiritually trying to keep up with the demands of two million Israelites and be the one everyone turned to when they needed answers to their problems. That’s when his father-in-law told him that he could not handle it alone.

It takes wisdom, maturity, and humility to ask for help or to say no to helping when someone needs help. If we take on too much than we can handle, however, we can end up not helping anyone because we will soon discover that we can’t cope. What Moses was doing was neither good for him nor the people depending on him. Sometimes we may need to guard ourselves against becoming overwhelmed by too many people offloading their problems to us. And doing that is a sign of strength, not weakness.

ACTION POINT
🖋️If you are feeling like you’re taking on too many people’s problems, next time someone asks for your help, try suggesting they speak to someone else who might be able to help them better than you can but commit to praying for them.

SCRIPTURES
Numbers 11:13-17; Philippians 2:30; Acts 6:1-4

PRAYER POINTS
1. Father, thank You for the gift of life.

2. Father, help me to know my limit in the name of Jesus.

POWER TO THE WEAK

“he Giveth Power To The Faint; And To Them That Have No Might He Increaseth Strength.” Isaiah 40:29

MESSAGE
We’ve all gone through moments of complete helplessness—times when we felt absolutely powerless to help others, or even to help ourselves. It might be our own thoughts holding us back, because we feel we’re not capable or not strong enough to face something. But we’re not powerless or helpless, because we have God to help us through it.

As hard as it is, we can trust God. If we’re willing to step out in faith, His power goes with us. One of the greatest promises in the Bible is: “He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might He increaseth strength.” (Isaiah 40:29). That verse promises us that even in our weakest moments, we have power that God will build on. He will use even the smallest amount of strength we possess. We just need to have faith that He’ll help us increase it.

That verse means that we don’t have to live in exhaustion and weakness. God has the power to take everything that wears us down, everything that tries to break us, and free us from it. He’s ready and willing to help us. We just need to bring it all before Him and trust Him with our weaknesses.

This also applies to when we’re not allowing ourselves to feel weak. When we convince ourselves that we can do it alone, we’re denying God the right to carry us and strengthen us. Today, resolve to allow God into every area of weakness and exhaustion in your life. He wants to help you; let Him.

ACTION POINT
🖋️Here are two verses you can memorise for moments when you’re feeling powerless: Micah 3:8 and Matthew 19:26. In what area do you feel weak today? Ask God to help you.

SCRIPTURES
Isaiah 40:29-31; Micah 3:8; Matthew 19:26

PRAYER POINTS

2. Lord, I believe, help Thou my unbelief in the name of Jesus;

3. Father, I cast my worries and burdens over to You today in the name of Jesus.

ACCESSING THE TREE OF LIFE

"Blessed Are They That Do His Commandments, That They May Have Right To The Tree Of Life, And May Enter In Through The Gates Into The City.” Revelations 22:14

MESSAGE
To have a right to the tree of life means that we have fought the good fight of faith and we have also obeyed God’s commandments as the Lord has given them unto everyone.

Our text today is referring to the last day when Jesus will come and take those who are His — those who have not defiled themselves — as His bride. These are those who have not committed an abomination or living a lie. Rather, they are those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life (Revelations 21:27).
And when they have eaten the tree of life, they shall never go hungry again; there shall not be weeping and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow nor pain because they have tasted out of the tree of life. Such people have a right to the tree of life and ready access to go in through the gate into the Holy City. May we be counted worthy, too, in Jesus’ name.

ACTION POINT
🖋️Do away with anything that could defile you and hinder your right to the three of life.

SCRIPTURES
Revelation 2:7; 21:27; Exodus 19:10; Psalm 118:20;

PRAYER POINTS
1. Father, thank You for the hope of partaking in the tree of life.

2. Father grant unto me a listening ear to do your commandments and inherit your kingdom in the name of Jesus.

3. Father, help me to live a life that will enable me to reign with You in Your Kingdom.
