Topic: Prayer and healing ministry
Text: James 5:14-16
INTRODUCTION
Prayer and healing ministry is a central theme throughout the scripture from Genesis to Revelation, God always reveal himself as a healer while prayer is the means through which believers access God's healing power through faith.
In Exodus 15:26 God said "I am the lord that healeth thee". This and other passages in the scripture reveal God as the only source of healing, because of His power as a sovereign God with compassion and mercy to mankind.
AIMS OF THE LESSON
1. To show the Biblical understanding of prayer and healing (Exodus 15:26)
2. To build faith in God
3. To build up confidence that God still heals today as he did in the past (Heb 13:8, John 14:12)
4. To practically equip believers on how to pray for the sick with compassion, authority in Jesus' name and dependence on the Holy Spirit (Mark16:17-18).
OBJECTIVES OF THE LESSON
1. To know Jehovah Rapha and explain God's covenant of healing from Exodus 15:26.
2. Identify 3 key scriptures that show healing is provided in the atonement (Isaiah 53:5, 1 Peter 2:24, Psalm 103:3)
NOTE: The lesson is to enable believers to move from "knowing" about "healing" to "believing" God heals to "doing" the work of Jesus in prayer ministry - John 14:12
MAIN LESSON
WHAT IS PRAYER: Prayer is communication with God through Jesus by the help of the Holy Spirit.
Elements of prayer (Ingredients that makes prayer healthy)
Thanksgiving - 1 thess.5:18
Confession and repentance - Psalm 66:18
Supplication and petition - Phil. 4:6
Intercession - 1 Tim 2:1
WHAT IS HEALING: Healing is the supernatural work of Jehovah Rapha to mend, cure and restore every part of man (Spirit, Soul, and Body) through the atonement of Christ - Isaiah 53:5, 1 Peter 2:24.
Healing has 3 dimensions;
1. Physical
2. Emotional/Inner
3. Spiritual healing
Healing is God's nature, the only One who Heals.
It cannot be manipulated or earned. It is grace - Ephesians 2:8-9.
ROLE OF PRAYER IN HEALING
The role of prayer in healing ministry is not a side dish but main channel God uses.
1. Prayer connect us to God (Jehovah Rapha - Exodus 15:26)
2. Healing flows from relationship while prayer put us in contact with God
3. Prayer releases faith - Mark 11:24
4. Faith is the hand that receives what grace provide - Matthew 9:9
5. Prayer enforces Christ victory (col. 2:15). In Isaiah 53:4 Jesus already paid the price for healing.
6. Prayer invites the Holy Spirit power (Acts 4:30-31).
Role of prayer in healing cont'd
When we pray God's presence and power manifest (Isaiah 10:27) and the presence of the Holy Spirit breaks the yoke.
It breakes spiritual resistance (Ephesians 6:18, Mark 9:29), we use authority in Jesus to command sickness and demons to leave - Mark 16:17-18
Note: prayer does not convince God to heal, because He already wants to heal us - 3 John 1:2.
How we cooperate with God in prayer makes Him to release what He has already done.
METHODS OF HEALING
1. Through spoken words - Matthew 8:8
2. Through confession - James 5:16
3. Through faith of others (prayer) - Mark 2:3-5
4. Laying of hands and anointing of oil
5. Meditation - 1 Timothy
HINDRANCES TO PRAYER/HEALING
1. Unbelief - Mark 6:5-6 which limited Jesus works.
2. Unconfessed sins - Psalm 66:18, Isaiah 59:1-2
3. God's sovereignty - 2 Corinth. 12:8-9
4. Ignoring wise counseling (wisdom) - 1 Timothy 5:23, Luke 10:34
PRACTICAL GUIDELINES TODAY
What we should do to attract healing today:
1. Center your cure on Jesus (Acts 4:12)
2. Pray with compassion (Matthew 14:14)
3. Listen to the Spirit (John 5:19), do what the father is doing.
4. Involve the church (James 5:14), call Elders and Leaders of the church.
5. Follow up (don't be discouraged) Luke 17:14-19
CONCLUSION
Prayer and healing go together, God still heals today and He uses ordinary people who pray to bring His healing to a hurting (afflicted) world, (Matthew 10:8)
