CHRISTIANS & EMOTIONAL HEALTH: A POWERFUL SESSION TO REMEMBER
Mkpongke Ukanireh
In our world today, many silently battle anxiety, stress, and emotional struggles. Being a Christian does not make us immune to emotional challenges, but it gives us the right foundation to overcome them.
The session clearly emphasized that our emotional and psychological well-being is not separate from our spiritual life. Rather, it is deeply connected to our relationship with God. We saw from Scripture that even Jesus Christ expressed emotions.
He wept, showed compassion, felt distress, and yet remained perfectly grounded. This reminds us that emotions are not a weakness, but a natural part of our humanity that must be properly understood and managed.
There are common challenges that affect believers, such as anxiety, depression, guilt, anger, and even burnout, especially among those actively serving in the work of God. These struggles do not make us less spiritual, but rather highlight the need for balance and intentional care.
A major highlight of the lecture was the teaching on emotional intelligence, which is the ability to understand and manage our own emotions while relating well with others. We are encouraged to develop self-awareness, practice self-control, show empathy, and build healthy relationships, recognizing that these are essential not only for personal growth but also for effective Christian living.
As Christians, we are encouraged to express our feelings in healthy ways, build a consistent prayer and Word life, maintain supportive relationships, and take time to rest and recharge when necessary. It is important to think positively, live within our means, and avoid unnecessary pressure from societal expectations. Seeking help from counselors, mentors, or medical professionals is not a sign of weak faith, but an act of wisdom.
The church must create an environment where people feel safe to share their struggles without fear of judgment, where love replaces stigma, and where genuine support and guidance are readily available.
In conclusion, we were left with a profound reminder that a Christian with unstable emotions reflects an imbalance that must be addressed. God desires that we live in total wholeness, spirit, soul, and body experiencing peace, stability, and joy even in difficult times.
