OBEDIENCE VERSUS LEGALISM (John 14:15)

Obedience is an attitude of the heart toward a higher authority. As Christians, that higher authority is God Himself.

Obedience also deals with the individual's own attitude toward God. Legalism, on the other hand, places the commandment above the commander. It places the emphasis on the law itself, and the keeping of it for law's sake, rather than to the glory of it's Giver.

Those who are legalistic also tend to look at the activities of others rather than their own heart's attitude. This attitude was common to the Pharisees in Romans 2.

Obedience is primarily an attitude of hearing. We either hear in a subordinate position of obedience, and also recognize the authority and wisdom of the one over us, or we elevate ourselves and refuse to hear the one over us.

By definition obedience involves submission to the authority and wisdom of the one giving the commandment.
