IBIONO DEANERY CATHEDRATICUM, 2025.
HIS LORDSHIP, MOST REV. DR. JOHN EBEBE AYAH (CATHOLIC BISHOP OF UYO DIOCESE) SET FOR HIS ANNUAL PASTORAL VISIT TO IBIONO DEANERY ON AUGUST 30,2025.
INSIGHTS ABOUT CATHEDRATICUM.
Cathedraticum is the annual financial contribution made by parishes to their diocesan bishop, a practice rooted in the word cathedra ("bishop's chair" or "throne") and reflecting loyalty and support for the bishop's pastoral and charitable work. Beyond a simple tax, it is a ceremonial act of gratitude, unity, and shared responsibility, where faithful gather to support the needs of the diocese and aid the poor.
Key aspects of the cathedraticum:
Origin and Meaning:
The term comes from the Latin cathedra, referring to the bishop's seat of authority and teaching.
Purpose:
The funds collected are used to support the bishop's pastoral assignments, the general administration of the diocese, and its various charitable works, particularly assisting the poor and needy.
Ceremony and Symbolism:
It's a significant annual gathering of the faithful, clergy, and religious to express their support for the bishop. It symbolizes their solidarity, faithfulness, and commitment to the bishop's leadership and the Church's mission.
Canon Law:
The 1983 Code of Canon Law describes it as a "tax" for the needs of the diocese, based on Canon 1263, which affirms the bishop's right to have the necessary means for his pastoral functions.
Evolution:
While traditionally a fixed amount, the cathedraticum can now be a tax proportionate to a parish's income, with some parishes also offering food items to support the poor.
In support of the Bishop Ayah's vision and Pastoral work, the Catholic faithfuls in Ibiono Deanery will gather at St Peters Parish, Ibiono, the Deanery headquarters on Saturday , 30th August, 2025 to welcome, celebrate and support the Bishop.
