Summary of Judges 5–6
Judges Chapter 5 – The Song of Deborah and Barak
Judges 5 is a song of victory sung by Deborah and Barak after God delivered Israel from the oppression of Jabin king of Canaan and Sisera his military commander.
Major events:
Deborah and Barak praised God for His intervention and celebrated the willingness of the people who offered themselves for battle (Judges 5:2).
The majesty and power of God were described; the mountains trembled before Him (Judges 5:4–5).
The nation had suffered fear and insecurity before God raised Deborah as a mother in Israel (Judges 5:6–7).
Some tribes willingly joined the battle while others remained indifferent.
Ephraim, Zebulun, Naphtali and Issachar fought.
Reuben, Dan and Asher failed to participate.
The stars fought from heaven and the river Kishon swept away the enemies (Judges 5:20–21).
Jael was blessed among women because she killed Sisera with a tent peg (Judges 5:24–27).
Sisera's mother waited in vain for her son to return.
The song ended by declaring: "Let all Your enemies perish, O Lord: but let them that love Him be as the sun when he goeth forth in his might." (Judges 5:31)
Result: Israel enjoyed peace for forty years.
Judges Chapter 6 – Gideon and God's Call
Major events:
Israel again sinned and God allowed the Midianites to oppress them for seven years (Judges 6:1).
The Midianites destroyed crops and impoverished Israel.
Israel cried to God for help.
God sent a prophet reminding them that disobedience caused their suffering.
The Angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon while he was hiding and threshing wheat.
The Angel said:
"The Lord is with thee, thou mighty man of valour." (Judges 6:12)
Gideon questioned why suffering existed if God was with them.
God commissioned Gideon to save Israel.
Gideon felt inadequate because his family was poor and he considered himself insignificant.
God promised:
"Surely I will be with thee." (Judges 6:16)
Gideon offered a sacrifice and discovered he encountered the Lord.
He built an altar called Jehovah-Shalom meaning "The Lord is Peace."
Gideon destroyed his father's altar of Baal and cut down the idol grove.
The people wanted Gideon punished, but his father defended him.
Gideon requested signs through the fleece:
First: fleece wet, ground dry.
Second: fleece dry, ground wet.
