SERMON: Christian Character 14 - LOVE
PREACHER: Pastor Emmanuel Chima
SCRIPTURE: Galatians 5:22-23 John 13:34-35 1 John 4:7-8


As we continue with our Christian Character series today, we are looking at the character of LOVE. Christian character distinguishes a true Christian. Anyone that exhibits these characters and bear them as fruits will impact the world for God

Love is our brand, we exist to love and worship God, to demonstrate His transforming love to the saved and unsaved man, in order to make him an agent of that love. God’s spirit is in you so you can bear the fruit of love.

Some Definitions of LOVE:

- Love is an intense feeling of deep affection.

- Love is great interest and pleasure in somebody.

- Love is an attachment and devotion to a person.

These definitions of love are correct but not complete. Love is one of the fruits of the spirit, this is AGAPE love.

Four Types of Love:

- Eros – erotic love

- Philia – Love for brothers and friends

- Storge - Love of a Parent

- Agape – Unconditional, self sacrificing.

Agape Love was activated when God gave Himself through Christ for us. It is the steady intention of a will to do someone else good sacrificially with no selfish intention. Agape Love is self sacrificing commitment in seeking the highest good of the one you love. This love is only sourced in God. It can only be exhibited by those who have the spirit of God. God will not call us to do what He has not empowered us to do. You are empowered to love like God

ATTRIBUTES OF AGAPE – 1 Corinthinsian 13:1-8a

Love is superior to gift. The gift of tongues and every other gift we express must come from the womb of love.

- Love is patient

- Love does not envy or parade itself.

- Love is not prideful, rude and does not seek to know it all.

- Love is not provoked; it has capacity for people’s fault.

- Love makes room for people.

- Love does not rejoice when it goes bad for other people.

- Love bears all things – You are willing to cover people protectively.

- Love believes all things – Love is not suspicious.

- Love endures all things. Love stays with you when things are rough.

BIBLE Examples of LOVE:
1. GOD – Deuteronomy 31: 8
God is the Source of Love and He assures us of His never failing love through His word. He says, I will never leave you nor forsake you. For God so loved the world not just Christians or a particular group of people. God loves all, even those you dislike. – John 3:16

2. JOSEPH – Genesis 50:15-2
Even though agape was not revealed in old testament, Joseph walked in it. His family turned against him because of his dream. They sold him to slavery, he suffered but 13 years later, Joseph showed them agape love. He loved them and fed them. Agape love makes excuses for people who hurt them. It teaches us to stop imputing guilt into people’s account. Joseph blessed them instead of shaming them.

3. JONATHAN – 1 Samuel 20:41-42
Jonathan was the son of a king. He was heir apparent, he saw the grace of God in David and he was willing to draw away everything for the good of his friend. Their heart was knit together. He revealed His father’s plot to kill David to him and he saved his life. His father called him a fool for loving a no body over himself. Agape love can come down and love all humanity and give people same opportunities.

4. ESTHER - Esther 3:8-10
When Esther did what she did to save Israel, she was already a queen but she scarified her position to save her people. She was already safe but love for her uncle and people made her to sacrifice. I challenge you to use your office to show agape love to humanity, sacrifice for people. Esther could have been killed or she could have lost her queen position but she would rather sacrifice it for the highest good of others. You will not loose what you sacrifice for the sake of others.

5. The woman with the Alabaster box – Luke 7:36-39
She showed her love by what she gave. She was forgiven much and so she loved much. She carried a whole year salary and gave all. Love shows itself in sacrificial giving. You have been forgiven and given much, do likewise.

6. Tabitha – Acts 9:36 -43
She gave her time and resources to the poor. People cried when something happened to her. Peter saw what she had done for the people and she was raised from the dead. God gave you so that you can spread it. Not every body has the capacity to make money, sustain and multiply it. Those who have shared with those who does not have and everyone had, that is agape love. Do good to the poor, Always consider the plight of people.

7. JESUS - John 11:35, Mark 14:36
Our ultimate example of agape love Is Jesus. He wept over Lazarus. He is the lover of our soul. He raised the widow’s only son. He died for us, he paid the ultimate sacrifice. He was 100% human and felt every pain. He prayed and generated so many heat that his blood vessels collapsed and he bleed. Yet He surrendered to the will of God’s love for humanity.

I challenge you all to answer God’s call to love. Love in deed not just in words. Can you practicalize your love for others and share what you have with them?

God has given you the holy spirit to empower you to love. By this all men will know that you are God’s disciple.

Pray that God will work in you, so that you love in the agape way.

Christian Character basically means the features, behaviors, mannerism, attitude and conducts that makes a Christian stand out as being like Jesus Christ. As part of our series on Christian character Pastor Emmanuel Chima brings a new insight on Goodness as one of the Christian Characters to imbibe.

Good work must be our way of life, just like our Lord Jesus Christ set the example from the beginning.

What is Goodness
It is the quality or state of being good. The Greek word translated “goodness” agathosune, is defined as “uprightness of heart and life”. Goodness means moral integrity and benevolent deed towards others. It means a moral and spiritual excellence manifested in active kindness It means doing good for others because your heart is good. Goodness is kindness from a heart with a good motive. If kindness is what you do, goodness is who we are. Goodness is moral and active kindness.

Exodus 34:6, Psalm 144:9, 1chronicles 16:34, Psalm 27:17, Psalm 107:8-9, Psalm 31:19, Psalm 119:68, Psalm 34:8, John 10:11, Luke 18:19, Acts 10: 38

From creation, God demonstrated His goodness: His patience is very good, His forgiveness is good, His accessibility is very good. If we ever thought of an example of a living flesh and blood who did goodness, think about Jesus Christ.

Jesus was a mobile goodness; He was a perfect demonstration of goodness Luke 4:18-19

Luke 10:30-37 Compassion comes from a good heart. God is good all the time and all the time God is good.

There are so many good men in the Bible, Joseph, the husband of Mary was a good man, King Hezekiah was a good King, Queen Esther, etc. Let’s talk about the good Samaritan, lots of people passed including Men of God, but the good Samaritan was the only one that stopped and helped. Its not about titles. It is about a good heart to to do good.

Visit people and change their situations, when they have needs just meet it. Be good to your Family, your wife, children, house helps, staff and every one you meet.

Goodness is a social capital God has given to you to invest in people. Be a good Husband to your Wife. Cover her weaknesses and celebrate her strength. Show you care by giving her the money to do her hair and make it better. Be kind, good and generous to your family members. Goodness must start from home. Be a good wife, be that virtuous woman to your Husband.

Care about your workers. Be a good boss. Be a good worker anywhere you serve. Be punctual at work and stay till the closing time and close at the right time. Be a good neighbor. Be a good Citizen, don’t bypass PHCN Meter or cheat the system. God expects goodness to proceed out of every Christian across all levels.

Healthy Tips For Expressing Goodness

1. Follow your thinking with good actions immediately. Start from your home with your Family members. Don’t be good outside and at home you are not good. Do good to everyone. When the thought comes, write it down so you don’t forget. Do not discriminate or label people.

2. Avoid distractions. As we do good, lets not focus on the rewards. Let us be good neighbours.

3. Help people pay Hospital bills, food and needs when you notice they are in need. God is looking for good men everywhere. Let us be good
