Our thanks goes to God Almighty for his mercy and grace upon all the children. We remember in our prayers those children in orphanage homes, hospitals and especially those children who were forcefully disconnected from their home by those horrible kidnappers in Nigeria.

Happy Emphasis Sunday to all the Children in PCN Family. Keep Excelling in Extravagant Grace.

_*Welcome to the Family Altar Daily Devotional Guide of The Presbyterian Church of Nigeria*_

*SATURDAY JANUARY 10TH, 2026*
TOPIC: *JESUS WILL COME AGAIN AND SOON*
BIBLE PASSAGE: *MATTHEW 24: 29-44*

*KEY VERSE:*
_*Therefore keep. watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.*_ - Matthew 24:42, 44

The fact that Jesus Christ will come again (the second time) is a subject matter that is rarely preached from our pulpits these days. In some churches, such topics are considered archaic and far fetched. People are more preoccupied with overcoming their economic hardship and many troubles facing them and thus gravitate towards *"feel good"* messages of prosperity without character. But the scripture rightly predicted that when Jesus will come again, people will be eating and drinking, taking and giving in marriage (v.38-39) and He will just come like a thief in the night (2 Peter 3:10).

Nevertheless, we are warned in 2 Peter 3:3 that they are scoffers in the last days who will ridicule the word of God following their evil desires. We find some of them today in public schools as teachers, in higher institutions, in government and political circles spewing hate against Christianity even questioning the existence of God and the promise of the second coming of Christ. Can you identify such scoffers today? We observe that scoffers are good at

confusing their listeners with logical thinking, _*"where is the promise of His coming?"*_(2 Peter 3:4). The same way Nehemiah was challenged by scoffers (Sanballat and Tobiah) saying that the wall being built was so feeble that a fox climbing on it will pull it down (Neh. 4:1-3). Scoffers' trade mark is to shift your attention from God's truth, discourage you and dampen your spirit and zeal for God. Psalm 1:1 reminds us that believers who are blessed do not sit on the seat of Scoffers.

*FRIDAY JANUARY 9TH, 2026*
TOPIC: *REJOICE IN THE LORD ALWAYS*
BIBLE PASSAGE: *PHILIPPIANS 4:4-8*

*KEY VERSE*
_*Rejolce in the Lord aiways, lwilisay it agaln: Rejolcel*_ -Phlipplans 4:4

To rejoice is to feel or show much happiness. It is an emotional feeling of excitement exhibited by men and even angels when something good happens. In Luke 15:10, the scripture tells us that there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents. Interestingly, there are people who rejoice in iniquity; when they see people in pain or sufering. But true love does not rejoice in iniquity (1 Cor. 13:6). You should never rejoice over the misfortune of others even if they Consider themselves your enemy. That is the Christian spirit.

The scientific benefits of joy are numerous and far-reaching, impacting both physical and mental well-being. Joyful enmotions have been linked to a stronger immune system, reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, and even increased longevity. Furthermore, joy enhances cognitive function, boosts mental resilience, and can help in coping with stress and adversity.

Little wonder that Apostle Paul, himself a prisoner in Rome at the time he wrote the epistle to the Philippi believers, urged them to rejoice as he knew both the spiritual and, perhaps, therapeutic benefits. And for emphasis, Paul insists that *"rejoicing"* should be done *"always,"* that is, in all circumstances and situations. He demonstrated what he preached because it is not easy to be rejoicing while in prison's chains.

In rejoicing, you also learn to give thanks to God because all things work for good to them that love God (Rom. 8:28). Paul enjoins Christians in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, _*"In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you."*_ This kind of rejoicing or thanksgiving is not a make-belief but such that comes from a heart...

*DATE: THURSDAY,*
*JANUARY 8TH, 2026*
TOPIC: *CAST ALL YOUR CARES ON THE LORD*
BIBLE PASSAGE: *1 PETER 5:7*

*Key Verse:*
*"Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you" - 1 Peter 5:7.*

As natural human beings in this world, we all experience times of joy, sorrow, anxiety and peace at different moments in our lives. These different moods happen mostly as a result of the experiences we face and our disposition towards life. Thus our worldview on issues is critical in how we manage our circumstances and situations. It is normal to expect someone who passed an examination to the university or gained a much-awaited promotion in the office to be joyful, but it could become an anxious if the finances to fund his/her education is not there or the promotion would take the person away from family on transfer to a far location.

In our text for today, Apostle Peter was admonishing elders and leaders in the church to take care of the flock of God in humility, with a willing heart and live exemplary lives worthy of their calling (vv. 1-3).

What is your motivation as a leader in the house of God? Why do you like to occupy high positions of leadership in the church or society? We must learn to serve learn to serve in any leadership capacity with a heart of humility, love and integrity just like our Master Jesus.

Apostle Peter continues to admonish younger people to be submissive or respectful to elders both in church and the society (vv: 5-6). Respect for leaders and the elderly is fast being eroded today because of lack of societal values and the impact of social media on our youths. Yet the scriptures enjoin us to subject to one another with humility because God hates the proud but blesses the humble.

In verse 7, we are assured of the Lord’s waiting hands and shoulders of comfort that we can lean on when we are anxious because He cares. God has the capacity
