LESSON: 007
TOPIC: JOHNS TESTIMONY OF JESUS
TEXT: JOHN 3:22-36

INTRODUCTION:
At Judea, Jesus and his disciples, tarried and baptized some people. At Aenon near Salion, John the Baptist also baptized people. This idea of Jesus baptizing people side by side with John, generated some questions which the Lord took time to clear. John went ahead to clear that Jesus is the reason for his existence and muxsting. In fact, he (John) came to bear witness to Him.

LESSON EXPLAINED:
1. THE OPINION OF THE DISCIPLE OF JOHN CONCERNING THE LORD JESUS, VS 22-29.
At Judea, Jesus the Christ tarried and baptized some people while John the Baptist also did the same at Aenon near Salion. This generated some questions in the minds of Johns disciples. Afterall in the past, they saw Jesus came to John to be baptized. To see the one who was baptized now baptizing people raises a lot of controversy. In the same way some Church folks believe that some ministerial responsibilities are the right of a set of people. The vineyard of God is so large that as Paul says, Appolos must water. These is nothing that is happening elsewhere. No one has monopoly control over the spirit and the work of God. John took time to explain again that he is not the Christ but only a messenger (a forerunner). When the bridegroom shows up, all her maidens must submit to him and quit the scene.

2. HE MUST INCREASE, BUT I MUST DECREASE, VS 30-36
At this point, John the Baptist took time to teach further about the relationship that exists between him and the Lord Jesus. He (Jesus) must increase in every area while he decreases and gets ready to quit the scene. Let us equally allow Jesus and the grace of God to increase in our lives while our SELF decreases.

Furthermore, Jesus Christs real nativity is from above while Johns nativity is of this earth. Of course, he that is from above, must be above all! Thus Jesus is Lord and master over John. Besides, by our redemption our status as believers no longer is earthly but far above. When God raised Jesus Christ from the dead we were raised with Him and we are seated in the heavenly places in Christ, far above principalities and powers and might and every name that is named, not only in this world but also in that which is to come. Eph. 1:19-23; 2:5-6. Out nativity as Believers, has changed from the earthly to the heavenly. Because we are from above, we above all! We are above sin, sickness, shame, disgrace. We live in dominion and we reign in life!.

He who believes in the son; not John the Baptist has everlasting life and he that believeth not, shall not see life.

PRACTICAL LESSONS
1. That some other people do what we do to promote the kingdom should not be seen as something to quarrel about.
2. Jesus must increase in us while we decrease, relative to Him.
3. Our nativity after redemption is FROM ABOVE. As a result of this, we are ABOVE ALL!.

MEMORY VERSE
He must increase, but I must decrease. John 3:30.

LESSON: 004
TOPIC: WEDDING IN CANA OF GALILEE
TEXT: JOHN 2:1-11

INTRODUCTION:
From our last lesson, it was at Cana that Jesus called His first disciples. While there, himself, his disciples whom He had just called, and even His mother Mary were invited to a wedding in the same region. It was here that He performed His first miracle which had to do with turning water, into wine.

We trust that by the grace of God, we shall have a lot to learn from this outing of the Lord with His disciples.

LESSON EXPLAINED:
1. THE WEDDING AND THE INVITEES VS 1-3
The couple that celebrated their wedding feast, remains anonymous. One key feature of this wedding is the caliber of people who were invited to the party. It included Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour, Mary His biological mother and His disciples. While it is true that we have the liberty to invite whosoever we will to our parties, let us tread with same level of caution. Let us endeavor to invite those who will be a solution and not just anybody, some of who may become a problem or thorn in our flesh. As we shall soon see, all who were invited tried to make the ceremony successful even in the time of need. Friendship is by choice and not by force. Do not live your life to please people by trying to please everyone. He that walketh with the wise, shall be wise, Prov. 13:20. Association with anyone who does not add value to you needs to be reconsidered except for the sole purpose of winning such to Christ.

2. WHATSOEVER HE SAITH UNTO YOU, DO IT. VS 4-7
The wedding feast had not gone too far, when calamity struck they have no wine! Nothing can be more embarrassing for one to have such class of guests and there is no wine.

Mary, the mother of Jesus, rather than mock, went straight to the Lord to report the problem with the view of finding solution. Marrying and married people should be mindful of the kind of people they surround themselves with pillars or caterpillars she came to the disciples and said whatsoever He tells you is ok, do it vs 5.They followed the instruction from the master to fill six water pots with water. Then followed that to serve without doubt to the guests beginning from the chairman. Those who act on the word of God without doubting will see miracles. Luke 5:4-8.
Acting on the raw word of God without doubt is the sure gateway to miracles.

3. JESUS TURNS WATER TO WINE VS 8-12
Jesus turned water, to wine. Wine from dictionary, is an alcoholic beverage. The Bible said that wine makes glad the heart of man and oil makes his face to shine, Ps. 104:15; In Prov. 20:1, Solomon from his wealth of wisdom told us that wine is a mocker and strong drink is raging. In 1 Cor. 10:23, the Bible says all things may be lawful but all things are not expedient (helpful). In order to remain as light to the world and salt to the earth and in the spirit of self-denial, genuine believers do not give wine or alcohol neither do we drink. This is why we are encouraged to stay away from alcohol.

PRACTICAL LESSONS
1. In order for our marriage to succeed, we must bring those who will proffer solution and not problem close.
2. When we act on the raw word of God, we shall see the miraculous.
3. We do not encourage bible believing people to give or drink wine or alcohol in the spirit of self-denial.

MEMORY VERSE:
Whatsoever He saith unto you, do it. John 2:5b.

LESSON: 003
TOPIC: THE FIRST DISCIPLES OF JESUS
TEXT: JOHN 1:35-51

INTRODUCTION:
Our lesson today, in on the call of Jesus for His first set of disciples. John the Baptist started the whole thing by introducing two of his disciples. Andrew and then Peter. These two continued the sequence by bringing other disciples all to Jesus.

I suppose we have obvious lessons to learn from this whole episode of soul winners and soul bringers to Jesus.

LESSON EXPLAINED:
1. ANDREW AND PETER ARE BROUGHT TO JESUS VS 35-42
Andrew and Peter, were followers/disciples of John the Baptist. When the two brothers heard John the Baptist introduce Jesus again as the lamb of God, they disengaged from him and started following Jesus. We are saved to WIN AND BRING SOULS TO JESUS; not ourselves. Their decision to follow Him was total. So much that they asked for where He was dwelling. In other words from that day the two brothers resolved that in following the Lord, where He dwells is where they dwell like Ruth .for whither thou goest, I will go: and where thou lodgest, I will lodge, thy people shall be my people and thy God shall be my God. Ruth 1:16

Following Jesus has to do with taking delight in dwelling where He dwells. After all in the presence of the Lord there is fullness of joy.

No sooner had Andrew found the Lord Jesus than he met his brother Simon. He told Him he has found the Messiah which is the Christ. The next thing he did was to bring him to Jesus vs 40-41. What are you doing about your brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, cousins, nephews, friends who have not met the Lord? We owe them a responsibility of bringing them to the Lord. If we fail, they remain with Satan and they will slide to hell. We are soul winners and soul bringers.

2. JESUS CALLS PHILIP AND NATHANIEL VS 43-51
The next day, as Jesus was going to Galilee, He found Philip and saith unto him FOLLOW ME! The meaning of that phrase is that from that moment Philip ceases to be in charge of his life and becomes a follower of Jesus. Jesus becomes the leader which he is a follower. Following Jesus means making Him the Lord and leader of our lives. Like in lesson explained above, it means surrendering our lives to Him to take control of joyfully!.

Philip in turn found Nathaniel and told him that he had found the Lord Jesus. Nathaniel did not just follow. Rather, he was in doubt about the person of Jesus being a Nazarene. Philip persisted in inviting and bringing him to Jesus. Not all people we invite to the Lord will readily follow us. Let us learn to persevere and be persuasive the way Philip did. In vs 49, the Nathaniel who was in doubt about the person of Jesus, confessed and said: thou art the son of God; thou art king in Israel. This again portrays surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. Nathaniel and Philip did not only come to Jesus but he also believed in Him. John 3:16-18.

PRACTICAL LESSONS
1. We are saved to invite others to the Lord Jesus.
2. Following Jesus entails surrendering our lives to Him as Lord.

MEMORY VERSE:
And Nathaniel said unto him, can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, come and see. John 1:46

LESSON: 001
TOPIC: JESUS, THE LIGHT OF MEN
TEXT: JOHN 1:1-18

INTRODUCTION:
Last year, most of our lessons were on the book of Luke where we dwelt majorly on APTITUDINAL CHANGE. This year, our emphasis changes to the book of John. We intend, through this book to dwell on the person of Jesus Christ our Saviour.

Our lesson today is on Jesus the Light of the World. Attempts are made to look at His deity and pre-existence, the witness which John bore concerning Him and He, being the word that is made flesh. May God through His spirit shed his light on His word for our maximum benefit in Jesus name!

LESSON EXPLAINED:
1. THE PRE-EXISTENCE AND DEITY OF JESUS CHRIST VS 1-3
In the beginning in vs 1 which tallies with the in the beginning in Gen. 1:1, talks of the time frame before creation started here on planet earth. In this beginning was the WORD. This WORD was with God and the WORD was God Himself. The WORD in this context refers to the person of our Lord Jesus Christ. Logically speaking, it means that Jesus Christ did not begin His existence when He was born by Mary in Bethlehem of Judea. Rather, Jesus was with God at the time of creation And God said, let us make man in OUR” own image, after our own likeness. Gen. 1:26. In vs 3, we are told that all things were made by Him, in other words, Jesus Christ created the world and at the same time, created us all. At this time, He existed in the spirit as God. When He was born by Mary, He became flesh and existed among us in form of human being and He dwelt among us. John 1:14.

2. THE WITNESS OF JOHN VS 4-13
A witness is one who sees or has personal knowledge of something. John the Baptist, had personal knowledge of Jesus hence he said behold the lamb of God who taketh away, the sins of the whole world. John 1:36. He was send to introduce the Saviour to us; therefore believe his witness.

The witness of John embraced the following:-
In Him was life
And the life was the light of men
The light shineth in the darkness and the darkness comprehended it not i.e. could not cover it.
Life in this context means the very attribute that exists in God that makes Him the living God. The Greeks call it ZOE the God kind of life. This life was what Jesus Christ, came to introduce to us such that as one receives Him as Lord and Saviour this is duplicated in the spirit man of that individual. Such a one becomes a human being on the outside but carrying God inside of Him. This life that comes to dwell on the inside at the new birth also brings along with it, the divine light of God. Therefore, anyone who receives the life receives the light as well and the person becomes enlightened or illuminated on the inside! This light is so strong and domineering that neither the darkness that hitherto existed in the recipient or in the world can stop or cover it up.

John needed to bear witness to the light because even though He created the world, the world did not know Him. Even His own people rejected Him. However, as many as received Him, to them He gave power (authority, right, enablement) to become sons of God. Even those who believe on His name. Those who received Him are regarded as born by Him or born again John 3:3. They are not born by the will of man or the flesh but of God. Are you born of Him? Are you His Child?

3. THE WORD MADE FLESH VS 14-18
The first letter used for the WORD is capital letter meaning that it is referring to a proper noun in the person of Jesus Christ. The Word which was in the beginning with God changed to flesh when He was born by Mary and He dwelt among us. The glory which He manifested in this form showed that He was full of grace and truth. John bore witness to His pre-existence. He testified further that Jesus was before Him even at the time of creation.

While Moses gave the law to Israel, grace and truth came through Jesus. The Lord introduced us to the era of Grace.

PRACTICAL LESSONS
1. Jesus Christ already existence at the time of creation and He created the world and even we who are humans.
2. Jesus Christ brought the life of God and the light of God to us in this wicked world.

3. The same Jesus (who is God) who created all things in Genesis is the same who was born in human flesh and came to dwell among us.

MEMORY VERSE:
But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become sons of God, even to them that believe on His name. John 1:12
