LESSON: 001
TOPIC: JESUS, THE LIGHT OF MEN
TEXT: JOHN 1:1-18
INTRODUCTION:
Last year, most of our lessons were on the book of Luke where we dwelt majorly on APTITUDINAL CHANGE. This year, our emphasis changes to the book of John. We intend, through this book to dwell on the person of Jesus Christ our Saviour.
Our lesson today is on Jesus the Light of the World. Attempts are made to look at His deity and pre-existence, the witness which John bore concerning Him and He, being the word that is made flesh. May God through His spirit shed his light on His word for our maximum benefit in Jesus name!
LESSON EXPLAINED:
1. THE PRE-EXISTENCE AND DEITY OF JESUS CHRIST VS 1-3
In the beginning in vs 1 which tallies with the in the beginning in Gen. 1:1, talks of the time frame before creation started here on planet earth. In this beginning was the WORD. This WORD was with God and the WORD was God Himself. The WORD in this context refers to the person of our Lord Jesus Christ. Logically speaking, it means that Jesus Christ did not begin His existence when He was born by Mary in Bethlehem of Judea. Rather, Jesus was with God at the time of creation And God said, let us make man in OUR” own image, after our own likeness. Gen. 1:26. In vs 3, we are told that all things were made by Him, in other words, Jesus Christ created the world and at the same time, created us all. At this time, He existed in the spirit as God. When He was born by Mary, He became flesh and existed among us in form of human being and He dwelt among us. John 1:14.
2. THE WITNESS OF JOHN VS 4-13
A witness is one who sees or has personal knowledge of something. John the Baptist, had personal knowledge of Jesus hence he said behold the lamb of God who taketh away, the sins of the whole world. John 1:36. He was send to introduce the Saviour to us; therefore believe his witness.
The witness of John embraced the following:-
In Him was life
And the life was the light of men
The light shineth in the darkness and the darkness comprehended it not i.e. could not cover it.
Life in this context means the very attribute that exists in God that makes Him the living God. The Greeks call it ZOE the God kind of life. This life was what Jesus Christ, came to introduce to us such that as one receives Him as Lord and Saviour this is duplicated in the spirit man of that individual. Such a one becomes a human being on the outside but carrying God inside of Him. This life that comes to dwell on the inside at the new birth also brings along with it, the divine light of God. Therefore, anyone who receives the life receives the light as well and the person becomes enlightened or illuminated on the inside! This light is so strong and domineering that neither the darkness that hitherto existed in the recipient or in the world can stop or cover it up.
John needed to bear witness to the light because even though He created the world, the world did not know Him. Even His own people rejected Him. However, as many as received Him, to them He gave power (authority, right, enablement) to become sons of God. Even those who believe on His name. Those who received Him are regarded as born by Him or born again John 3:3. They are not born by the will of man or the flesh but of God. Are you born of Him? Are you His Child?
3. THE WORD MADE FLESH VS 14-18
The first letter used for the WORD is capital letter meaning that it is referring to a proper noun in the person of Jesus Christ. The Word which was in the beginning with God changed to flesh when He was born by Mary and He dwelt among us. The glory which He manifested in this form showed that He was full of grace and truth. John bore witness to His pre-existence. He testified further that Jesus was before Him even at the time of creation.
While Moses gave the law to Israel, grace and truth came through Jesus. The Lord introduced us to the era of Grace.
PRACTICAL LESSONS
1. Jesus Christ already existence at the time of creation and He created the world and even we who are humans.
2. Jesus Christ brought the life of God and the light of God to us in this wicked world.
3. The same Jesus (who is God) who created all things in Genesis is the same who was born in human flesh and came to dwell among us.
MEMORY VERSE:
But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become sons of God, even to them that believe on His name. John 1:12
