EAGLES' DEVOTIONAL
THE PROBLEM – FEAR (2)
“For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.” (Job 3:25)
As a man, Job, in the expanse of his wealth and influence neither cheated nor took bribes. With everyone at his beck and call he neither committed adultery nor lied. He “… was perfect and upright… and eschewed evil. He didn’t take pleasure in watching others suffer. He was charitable to all and sundry. He was a man “… that feared God…” In addition to his fervent fear of God, Job secretly but strongly feared poverty, sickness, failure, loss, blasphemy and the probability of an evil occurrence befalling him or his household.
This innermost decomposer is the reason, “… when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all, for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their heart. Thus did Job continually.” (Job 1:5). But in the genesis of his predicament, he burst out and confessed in Job 3:25 saying “For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.”
Fear, whether secret or conspicuous, of the unknown is one glaring factor that makes our setbacks and unfavorable circumstances seem as if they are beyond human or even divine reversals. Inspite of Job’s fear and eventual predicament, his unstaggered faith yielded fruit, as seen in Job 42:12. “So the LORD blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning…” Psalm 27:1 gives a solace. It says, “The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom (or what) shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”
