The believer must give himself wholly to the word until Scripture becomes his life. We must invest our time, attention, energy, and resources in the things that open the Scriptures to us, because the word is worth every investment. But the written word must not remain dry doctrine in the head; it must bring us into living fellowship with Jesus. Martha had correct doctrine about the resurrection at the last day, but Jesus brought her into a present encounter with the Resurrection and the Life.

The Word is not only to be fetched for others; first, the believer must come to Christ and drink, until his life becomes a river from which others can drink (1 Timothy 4:15–16; John 11:20–27; John 7:37–39).

Every gift, talent, and natural ability must pass through the word and the cross before it becomes useful to God. A person may have skill from the world, musical ability, administrative strength, intelligence, or public influence, but if that gift has not passed through death and resurrection, it can bring corruption into God’s work. The word of God subjects our gifts, motives, ambitions, and expressions to Christ until what comes forth carries life and becomes useful to God. Ministry must not be the importation of popularity; it must be service formed by the word (Galatians 2:20; Romans 12:1–2; 2 Timothy 3:17).

The Scriptures are profitable for correcting error, resetting the direction of a man’s life, and training him in good living. When a man is on a wrong journey, the ministry of the word can turn him back into the will of God. The word teaches a man how to live, how to relate with his wife, how to handle employees, how to conduct himself among co-workers, how to handle money, and how to walk in righteousness. The Scriptures are the comprehensive equipment of the man of God, fitting him fully for every branch of his work (2 Timothy 3:16–17; Psalm 119:105; Hebrews 4:12).
