WHO ARE FATHERS?

BIBLE READING: LUKE 11:1-13; JOHN 14:9; JAMES 1:17-27; 1 JOHN 2

"As for Me, behold, My Covenant is with you, and you shall be a father of many nations. No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations." Genesis 17:4-5 (NKJV)

One of the greatest dangers to the society we currently live in is the numerous misconceptions surrounding the Concept of Fatherhood as a result of a lack of discernment regarding the true identity of fathers. Definitions usually determine interpretations hence the need for us to start here because Purpose is anchored in Identity. We have studied and understood from our previous devotionals that the original term "Father" implies "Source, Nourisher, Sustainer, Supporter, Founder and Protector." We have also observed in addition that it means "Progenitor, Ancestor, Founder, Author, Teacher and Creator." These all means that the term "Father" is not necessarily a name but is more like a title derived from a function.

On the grounds of the aforementioned points, all fingers point back to the subject of Identity. In the words of Dr. Myles Munroe of blessed memory, "When Purpose is unknown, abuse becomes inevitable." Since the Strength of Purpose is drawn from Identity, it then begs the question: Who exactly is a father?

(1.) THE FATHER IS THE SOURCE OF THE SEED: Simply put, the father is the host of the life-giving cell known as the s***m. He is the source of human life while the woman is the incubator of human life. What this means is that life came THROUGH the mother but FROM the father.

(2.) THE FATHER IS THE NOURISHER OF THE FRUIT: The seed of every tree must first of all be planted before it eventually becomes another tree which bears its own fruit according to its kind. Whatever comes out of the seed is the fruit. Therefore, we, as Genuine fathers, are responsible for nourishing that same fruit. The seed supplies the tree which sustains the fruit while the fruit in turn produces more seed. According to the Holy Scriptures, the male is the source of the female: “For man did not come from woman, BUT WOMAN FROM MAN” (1 Cor. 11:8). Put in a different way, the man bears responsibility for whatever comes out of him. Since women came out from men, all men are responsible for their women and how they treat them. This is why whenever a woman goes out with a man, she’s meant to feel protected physically, emotionally and Spiritually.

(3.) THE FATHER IS DESIGNED TO PROTECT HIS FRUIT: Never forget that whatever comes out of you is an integral part of you. Any man who hates his wife equally hates himself: "A man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, AND THE TWO WILL BECOME ONE FLESH." So they are no longer two, but one" (Mk. 10:7–8). The Word of God instructs us to love our wives as ourselves (Eph. 5:25–33). Any man who genuinely loves his wife also loves his own flesh. This is why any man who walks about slapping, kicking, and cursing himself is naturally considered an unhinged lunatic who must be confined in a mental asylum. Fatherhood is indeed a Wonderful Responsibility since you are the progenitor of everything that proceeds from within you. Therefore, you have a Divine Duty to protect the same since every Genuine father is also a protector.

PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, we honour and exalt You for being our Father indeed. O Lord, please enlighten our eyes to the True Meaning of who a Genuine father is in Jesus' Mighty Name. Amen.

THE THREE PEOPLE YOU MUST NEVER FIGHT

BIBLE READING: PSALM 74:20; MALACHI 1:6-14; JOHN 13:34-35; 2 SAMUEL 21:15-17

“It is an Honour for a man to keep away from strife [by handling situations with thoughtful Foresight], but any fool will [start a] quarrel [without regard for the consequences]." Proverbs 20:3 (AMP)

Imagine a soldier on the battlefield: He does not just carry a sword for fighting; he also carries a shield for protecting his commander. The shield takes the arrows and blows meant for the leader. In God's Great Plan, sons are called to be like that shield for their fathers and families. Whenever trouble comes, whether it is gossip, attack or pressure, a true son stands in the gap and defends his father. Psalm 127:3-5 says that children, especially sons, are like arrows in the hand of a warrior. Arrows are used both to attack the enemy and to defend the one holding the bow. A son's heart should always be with his father and family, never with those who wish them harm (Prov. 20:20). If a son turns against his father, he brings serious trouble into his own life. On the other hand, when a father fights harshly with his son, it brings shame and breaks the family's Peace, just like we saw between King Saul and David (1 Sam. 18:6-15). The bond between fathers and sons is Holy. It must be filled with respect, protection and support. When sons defend their fathers and fathers lovingly guide their sons, the family becomes strong and united, ready to face any storm together.

There are three kinds of people we must be very careful never to fight, because doing so leads to great trouble:

(1.) FATHERS: A father is like the root of a tree. If you cut the root, the whole tree dies. Fighting against your father, whether your biological father, your Spiritual father or your Heavenly Father breaks a Sacred Connection and can bring problems for many generations. Malachi 4:5-6 warns that God will send a curse on the land if fathers' hearts are not turned to their children and children's hearts to their fathers. Instead, the Holy Bible commands us to honour our fathers and mothers so that we may live long and have good lives (Eph. 6:1-3). Honour means giving weight and value to someone. When we honour our fathers, we are not just following a rule. We are opening a door for blessings that can last for generations. Whether it is our Heavenly Father who directs us, our Spiritual fathers who teach and care for us or our biological fathers who gave us life, honouring them keeps families strong and brings God's Good Gifts into our lives.

(2.) BROTHERS IN THE FAITH: Imagine two soldiers from the same army fighting each other while the enemy watches and laughs. That is exactly what happens when Christian believers go to court against fellow believers. The Holy Scriptures give us clear instructions for solving disagreements among brothers and sisters in Christ. Jesus taught in Matthew 18:15-17 that if someone sins against you, go and talk to them privately first. Only if they refuse to listen should you bring one or two others. The goal is always Restoration, not revenge. In 1 Corinthians 6:1-8, Paul rebukes believers for taking their disputes before unbelieving judges. He says it would be better to be wronged than to drag the Family Name of God through public shame. Jesus also said in Matthew 5:21-26 that we should make peace with our brother before even bringing our gift to the altar. Relationships are more important to God than religious performances. So, before you think about lawsuits or public fights, try the Bible's Way: Private conversation, then witnesses, then Church leadership. Keep the Family of God united.

(3.) SONS IN THE FAITH: One of the most shameful things a Spiritual father can do is to descend to the level of fighting with his own son in the Lord. It is like a general wrestling with a private instead of letting other soldiers handle it. Even when a son rebels, the wise father allows loyal sons to deal with the erring brother. Look at Absalom. He rebelled against his father David. David did not go out to fight him personally. Instead, David's loyal men, led by Joab, went to battle and Absalom was killed (2 Sam. 15:1-18; 18:1-17). When satan rises up against God, Michael the Archangel and his Angels handle him; God does not argue with the devil (Lk. 10:18; Rev. 12:7-9). It is the job of loyal brothers to defend their father by correcting their erring brothers. Fathers must never lower themselves by exchanging insults or blows with their sons.

Fighting against someone God has anointed is like fighting against God Himself. King David showed us this powerfully. Even though King Saul was trying to kill him, David refused to raise his hand against Saul because Saul was the Lord's Anointed (1 Sam. 24:6; 26:9-11). Hebrews 13:17 tells us to respect those who lead us in the Lord. When we honour fathers, we unlock Blessings. When we make Peace with brothers, we build a Powerful Witness. When we respect God's chosen leaders, we protect ourselves and align with God's Order.

PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the Sacred Bonds You have placed within families and Your Church. O Lord, please give us Grace to honour our fathers with Respect and Love. Help us to be peacemakers among our siblings in the Faith. Give us Wisdom to honour Your Anointed ones without jealousy or pride. May our lives show the Blessing that comes from honouring these Relationships in n Jesus' Mighty Name. Amen.
