DATA MISTAKES BUSINESS OWNERS MAKE
Many business owners misuse and look down own their business data. I had a business owner in Portharcourt consult me for business data literacy, and my findings is what I really want to share so others won't go that path.
Am always interested in business owners having clear and deep understanding of business data which changes the gear.
Here are common but dangerous mistakes business owners make with business data and how to fix them.
1. Not tracking the right metrics.
Many business owners Focus on metrics that look good but don't drive business forward,
For example the business owner was interested in "number of website visitors" (1,000 visits/month) but ignores "conversion rate" (only 1% buy).
To Fix this : I had to make them Focus on conversion rate → optimize product pages, ads.
2. Ignoring customer data
This was another big mistake, was Missing insights on what customers want/need, and doesn't check customer feedback, the Result was repeated business drops.
To Fix this : Collect feedback → adjust services to sooth the customer demands.
Since it was a service business i introduced Using WhatsApp to ask customers about delivery experience which eventually turned things around
3. Data overload
Too much data = confusion
When a business owner tracks so much metrics → owner gets lost.
To Fix this : Focus on 3 key metrics (sales, customer complaints, conversion rate).
4. Not acting on insights.
Collecting data but don’t adjust is a big mistake business owners make.
So when they noticed most customers dropped off after 1 month and does nothing, thats a big issue.
To Fix this: Send engagement offers (e.g., "come back for a free session").
5. Inconsistent tracking
Most business owners has Inaccurate data and ofcourse will surely make bad decisions
To Fix this: Use a simple app (e.g., Google Sheets) for daily tracking.
These where simple fixe I engaged them on. Let me see on the comment section what you think should have been added to help out. Maybe a business owner will get that moving forward
