Sunday 24th May, 2026
THEME: CHILDREN OF EXCELLENCE
Minister: Bro. Prince Godwin
Topic: OVERCOMING THE ENEMIES OF EXCELLENCE AND WALKING IN GODLY SUCCESS
Text: Psalm 8:2, Daniel 6:1–5
Memory Verse: “Then this Daniel distinguished himself above the governors and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him.” – Daniel 6:3
Good morning brethren. Good morning mummies and daddies. The aim of today's message is to teach the children that excellence can be hindered by negative attitudes, habits, and behaviours, but those who overcome these enemies and remain faithful to God will enjoy lasting success, influence, and become godly examples to others.
Every child of God is called to live a life of excellence, but there are many things that can hinder spiritual growth, discipline, and success. While Daniel was known for his excellent spirit, his life also teaches us that excellence requires intentional choices and resistance against habits that destroy progress. Laziness, bad company, pride, dishonesty, distraction, and disobedience are major enemies that can prevent a person from fulfilling God’s purpose. Many people desire success, yet fail to address the attitudes and behaviours working against their growth. The Christian life requires vigilance, self-control, and commitment to righteous living. When children learn early to reject destructive habits and embrace godly principles, they position themselves for divine promotion, influence, and lasting impact in society.
Lesson Outline I: Enemies of Excellence
1. Laziness
- A little sleep and folding of hands lead to poverty (Proverbs 6:10–11).
- Laziness destroys opportunities and delays progress.
Bad company
- Evil company corrupts good manners (1 Corinthians 15:33).
- The people we associate with influence our behaviour and decisions.
Distraction and lack of focus
- Looking unto Jesus keeps us focused (Hebrews 12:2).
- Distractions weaken discipline and reduce productivity.
Pride and dishonesty
- Pride goes before destruction (Proverbs 16:18).
- God desires truth in the inward parts (Psalm 51:6).
- Pride and lies damage character and destroy trust.
Disobedience and bad behaviour
- God wants us to obey, accept correction, and live rightly.
- Disobedience closes doors to blessing and growth.
Lesson Outline II: The Outcome of Excellence
Excellence produces trust and influence
- Daniel was preferred above others because of his excellent spirit (Daniel 6:3).
- A diligent person will stand before kings (Proverbs 22:29).
Excellence produces lasting success
- Good success comes through obedience to God’s Word (Joshua 1:8).
- God promotes the faithful (Psalm 75:6–7).
3. Excellence glorifies God
- We should let our light shine before men (Matthew 5:16).
- Our lives should reflect Christ everywhere.
4. Excellence makes us good examples
- Timothy became an example despite his youth (1 Timothy 4:12).
- God wants our lives to positively influence others.
Conclusion:
Excellence is a product of intentional living, godly discipline, and consistent obedience to God. Although many obstacles such as laziness, pride, distraction, bad company, and disobedience can hinder progress, believers are empowered by God to overcome these enemies and pursue a higher standard of living. Daniel’s life demonstrates that true excellence attracts trust, influence, promotion, and divine favour. More importantly, excellence is not pursued merely for personal success, but to glorify God and become a positive example to others. When children choose right habits, maintain godly character, and remain faithful to God, they become vessels through which God’s greatness is revealed.
Prayer Points:
1. Father, help me to overcome every enemy of excellence such as laziness, pride, distraction, and bad company in Jesus’ name.
2. Lord, give me the grace to develop discipline, obedience, truthfulness, and diligence in all I do.
3. Father, let my life reflect excellence, bring glory to Your name, and make me a positive example to others.
