BIBLE INTERPRETATION

ACTS 8:34
The eu**ch asked Philip, “Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?” (NIV)

The Bible is the common book for all Christians. It is the only authority for Christian doctrine, conviction, correction and training in right living, 2 Timothy 3:16, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness”. The popular protestant bible has 66 books. Though the Catholics and other Christian groups have added the apocryphal books to the bible, they claim it was not added for doctrinal purposes but for historical references. Therefore, the 66 books of the bible form the basis for every Christian doctrine and practice. This means as believers, we are supposed to have a common understanding of every bible text, our practices and doctrine must be the same since we all use the same bible. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Though we use the same bible, we have different beliefs and practices all backed by the same bible. People are able to use the bible to backup whatever they believe and practice. They become so persuaded that they see people with contrary beliefs as heretics and sometimes satanic.

The major reason for these differences in beliefs and practices is what we called bible hermeneutics or interpretation. A person's belief system and practices come from his interpretation of the scriptures. If your interpretation of a bible text is wrong, your worship of God will be wrong. If your interpretation is wrong, your view of God will be wrong. Your experiences as a believer are determined by your understanding of the bible. This means that bible interpretation is very vital in Christian living. Your visions, dreams and spiritual encounters are a function of a person’s doctrine and doctrine is a function of bible interpretation. Practices such as polygamy, celibacy, gambling, tithing, baptism and the like are all viewed differently by believers due to their understanding of the scriptures. Denominations are formed based on their interpretation of the scriptures. Knowing how to interpret scriptures rightly is very vital.

In bible interpretation, we have the writer or the author, we have the text or the content and we have the reader or the interpreter. The best person to give the right meaning to a bible text is the author or the writer. They wrote the text and for that matter can explain what exactly they were communicating. Unfortunately, none of the writers or authors is available to explain their text or context. It is therefore the responsibility of the reader to interpret rightly the text of the author. In rightly interpreting what somebody wrote, there are rules of bible interpretation that must be followed in arriving at the right meaning of a bible text. When such rules are ignored, the reader is bound to be in error and that error will affect his worship or service of God. Many believers are in error due to their ignorance of these rules of bible interpretation.

CONFESSION: I worship God from the right understanding of the scriptures.

*THE PROPHETS*

*1 SAMUEL 10:6*
*And the Spirit of the Lord will
come upon thee, and thou shalt
prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man. (KJV)*

We have understood that the scriptures are Christocentric. This means Christ is the central focus and subject of the Scriptures. The
scriptures are about Christ and how through his death and resurrection man will receive eternal life through faith in Christ. Jesus said in Luke 24:25-27, “Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?”. This means that the message communicated by the prophets was about the death and resurrection of Christ. However, you will not see the name Jesus Christ in the words of the prophets in the Old Testament books. This means they also spoke about Christ in figurative form. It is by the
revelation of the mystery in the epistles that we can decode or understand the words of the prophets. We will be in error if we take the prophecies of the prophets literal. Some of these prophets used circumstances and events of their time to communicate Christ,

The experience of the prophet Jonah in the belly of the fish was an actual event but Jesus interpreted that event to be a dramatic communication of his death and resurrection. In Matthew 12:40, “For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth”. From our opening text, the phrase “Spirit of the Lord will come upon” is what happened to the prophets for them to prophesy. They received the inspiration to communicate concerning the death and resurrection of Christ and they spoke within the boundaries of their vocabulary and knowledge of God. It was not God who spoke through them word by word or verbatim by verbatim. They picked their own illustrations and figures of speech. The Spirit upon the prophets was for utterance or prophecy. They did not have the indwelling of the Spirit. The indwelling of the Spirit is for Christ's post-resurrection believers.

Another important thing to consider in reading the Old Testament books and the communication of the prophets is the limitation in their knowledge of God’s character and the operations of Satan. These limitations sometimes coloured the accuracy of their
communications. This made them sometimes use the wrong language or illustrations to communicate the message of God. They sometimes attributed destruction to God in an attempt to communicate the power of God. The preacher must therefore rightly divide the scriptures in the light of the teachings of Christ and the apostles. Though everything recorded in the scriptures was true, it is not everything written is a statement of truth. Our knowledge of God and Satan is better than how the prophets knew God. We now know God better in Christ. Christ is the full and accurate presentation of God. We cannot, therefore, depend fully on the words of the prophets to accurately know God. It is in and by Christ that God is fully and accurately known. We know God accurately in Christ.

*WHAT IS SALVATION?*

*ROMANS 10:9-10*
*That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. (KJV)*

Salvation is a very important word in the body of Christ. However, many people out of ignorant have their own explanation or concept of salvation which is different from what the bible teaches. What comes to your mind when they say somebody is saved? What do you think happened to the person who got saved? When you want somebody to get saved, what will be your expectation or how do you mean by the desire for somebody to be saved? If you don’t understand salvation as a believer, then it’s likely you are not saved or you are a baby in Christ. Every saved person should be able to explain the salvation he or she experienced.

Salvation is not the confession of sins. Salvation is not a decision to start attending church. Salvation is not stopping a particular sinful habit. It is not when you start making much money. Salvation is not receiving physical healing or getting demons cast out of you. Putting on a decent dress and changing from listening to secular music to gospel music is not salvation. Throwing away your gods and announcing to the whole world is not salvation. Changing your name and picking a Christian name or title is not salvation. Though all these acts are good and expected, they are not what makes a person saved.

When we say that somebody is saved, it means the person has heard and believed the gospel. It means the person has received eternal life. It means the person has received God’s forgiveness. A saved person has received the Holy Spirit in him or her. A saved person is a new creation. Salvation is resurrection from death to life. A saved person is born a child of God. These are the things that should come to mind when we hear somebody is saved and not activities. Those activities can be motivated by other reasons or experiences other than salvation experience. Though salvation should result in a change of conduct, change of conduct is not always the result of salvation. It is hearing and believing the gospel that makes a person saved.

TEACH ALL NATIONS

MATTHEW 28:19
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: (KJV)

We have explained that born again is a call into the ministry of God which is soul winning. We also taught that soul winning is the assignment for everyone in Christ Jesus. The instruction in the opening scripture to “teach all nations" means to make disciples. It is a Greek word called “mathēteuō”. This means that after we win the soul, we are to disciple the soul. To disciple means to teach, to bring the person to the knowledge of Jesus Christ. Paul in his epistle to Timothy his son in the gospel, said, 1 Timothy 2:1-4 “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour, Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth”. God wants all men saved and to come to the knowledge of Jesus Christ.

That means the first thing is for the man to be saved and then after salvation, the man must come to the knowledge of his salvation, and this is where discipleship is required. Therefore, discipleship is to bring the saved man to the knowledge of Jesus his saviour and to equip him or her for the work of the ministry. That is, to make the saved man a student of the word of God. God is interested in the spiritual growth or discipleship of believers as much as He is interested in the salvation of the unsaved. It will not be enough to win a soul without any plan to equip the new believer to grow in the knowledge of the salvation they have received. Making believers students of the word is a major aspect of Christian ministry. Evangelism must go along with discipleship. Making disciples is at the core of Christian living. In what is usually termed "The Great Commission", Jesus commanded the 12 disciples and arguably many more, who were his disciples to go into all the world and make disciples of every nation.

We said this call and commission is not peculiar to the 12 disciples only even though Jesus gave this commission of making disciples during his post-resurrection 40days teaching of his disciples. It is only when believers are discipled or equipped that they can also win and equip others. It is when believers are discipled that they get their minds renewed to live good conduct. It is only when believers are equipped through discipleship that they stand strong in the face of opposition and temptations. Believers who are not discipled or equipped remain babies and are not able to take advantage of their rights and responsibilities in Christ. Anytime God saves a man, a people and a nation, he called them into the act of discipleship. Discipleship, therefore, is the core of Christian living

CONFESSION: I am called to win souls and make disciples.

God cannot bring out your Eve when you're awake. If you doubt me, anywhere you see Adam, ask him. You g*t to be at rest for Grace to work. The best of you can only come to fruition when you're resting in the finished work of Christ. You must believe Grace to work the work and not you trying to work the work by your own strength. For out of strength, shall no man prevail. If you're for Grace, stay with Grace. If you're for works, stay with works. Any attempt to mix the two gonna produce an adulterated result. Think about it!!!

Romans 11:6 And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.
