Topic: The Sacred Hunger
Text: Psalm 42:1-2
“As the deer pants for streams of water, so my
My soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?”
*Introduction* :
We live in a world of manufactured appetites. We are conditioned to hunger for success, for comfort, for approval, for entertainment. Our souls are endlessly prompted, yet, beneath this surface-level churning, there is a deeper, God-given ache; a hollow place that no promotion, possession, or person can ever fill. The psalmist gives voice to this primal cry: not a polite request, but a panting thirst. This is no casual interest in spirituality; this is the desperation of a creature separated from its source of life. Today, we awaken to and cultivate that sacred hunger; a hunger for Jehovah-God Himself through His only given way Jesus Christ, and for the pervasive influence of His presence in our lives by His Holy Spirit.
There are few points we must take note of:
*Object of our Love:*
I. The Object of Our Hunger: Jehovah-God; The Self-Existent One
Our hunger must have the right object. We do not hunger for a concept, a force, or a distant deity. We hunger for Jehovah (YHWH)—the great “I AM” (Exodus 3:14).
14 And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.
This is the personal, covenant-keeping God who reveals Himself.
He is the Fountain of Life.
“For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light” (Psalm 36:9).
We don’t just want blessings from Him; we want Him. We thirst for the fountainhead, not just the water.
He Satisfies the Longing Soul. Psalm 107:9
“For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things”
The hunger itself is a gift; a beacon pointing us to the only One who can fill it.
*Elucidation* :
Imagine a man in a desert, dying of thirst, clutching a bag of gold. The gold is worthless because it cannot address his core need. So it is with our souls. We clutch achievements, relationships, and ideologies, but they are worthless to take the place of a soul-thirst meant for Jehovah alone. He is not merely a solution to our problems; He is the living water for our parched existence.
*II. The Evidence of True Hunger: Pursuit and Dependence*
A true hunger for God manifests. It is not a passive wish but an active, shaping pursuit.
It Drives Us to His Word.
Jeremiah 15:16
“Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart”
We don’t just read Scripture; we devour it. It becomes our necessary nourishment.
It Fuels Persistent Prayer. We echo the psalmist:
Psalm 63:1
“O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water”
Prayer becomes the essential breath of the starving soul.
It Produces Holy Dissatisfaction. Like the Apostle Paul, we say,
Philippians 3:10
“I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death” Comfort with our current spiritual state is the enemy of this holy hunger.
*III.The promise to the hungry: The Influence of His Presence*
When we hunger for Jehovah, we are not left to starve. He promises to fill us, and that filling translates into His powerful influence radiating through our lives.
He Fills the Hungry with Good Things.
Matthew 5:6
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled” This is a divine guarantee. The filling is His righteousness imparted to us (His character shapes ours.)
His Influence Becomes Our Environment.
Psalm 52:8
“But I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house of God; I trust in God’s unfailing love for ever and ever”
The one hungering for God is transplanted into His house (living constantly under the conditioning of His love, truth, and glory.)
His Spirit Becomes the Internal Spring.
John 7:38-39
“Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” By this he meant the Spirit…”
Satisfied hunger becomes a spring of influence for others. We are not just containers; we are conduits. God’s influence in us flows out to a thirsty world.
*Elucidation* : This is the beautiful cycle of grace: Our hunger leads us to Him. He satisfies us with Himself. That satisfaction doesn’t eliminate the hunger; it deepens it, even as it strengthens us. And now, filled with His presence, we become agents of His influence. Our homes, workplaces, and communities become places where the “streams of living water” begin to flow from our innermost being. The hunger for God makes us a source of His refreshment for others.
*IV. Cultivating the Appetite* : "Taste and See"
Perhaps you feel your hunger has grown dull. The appetite can be spoiled by the junk food of sin, distraction, and self-reliance. How do we reclaim it?
Come and Taste.
Psalm 34:8.
“Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him”
The first step is
1. obedience. Come to His table. Partake in worship, in the Word, in communion. The taste will reawaken the appetite.
2. Fast from the World’s Diet. We must intentionally turn away from what dulls our spiritual taste buds.
Colossians 3:5
“Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature…”
2. Ask for the Hunger. This is a prayer God delights to answer.
“Lord, I feel cold. I feel full of other things. But you are the living God. Create in me a desperate hunger for you. Break my contentment with anything less.”
Conclusion:
The deer pants not for a water, but for the water that means survival. So our souls pant for God. This sacred hunger is the hallmark of the authentic spiritual life. It is the engine of all transformations. It is the prerequisite for true influence.
Do not despise your holy discontent. Do not anesthetize that ache with lesser things. That hunger is the Spirit’s magnet, drawing you to the heart of the Father. It is the proof that you are alive to God.
Today, let us come to the fountain. Let us feast on His Word, the bread of life. Let us drink deeply of His Spirit. And as we are filled, may His influence so permeate our beings that from us will flow rivers of living water, pointing a starving world to the only One who can satisfy its deepest hunger; Jehovah, the great I AM, our portion and our prize.
Prayers:
“ The God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
Romans 15:13.
13 Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.
Go, hungry. Be filled. And overflow.
Amen.
