Topic: Awake O Sleeper
Text: Ephesians 5:14
The Christian life is not meant to be lived at the mercy of the devil. As believers, God has given us authority and a covenant of protection, but that protection is best experienced when we remain within the boundaries of obedience to Him. Scripture reminds us in Psalm 82:6 and Psalm 74:20 that God has called His people into a relationship of divine covering.
Lot serves as an example of a man who once walked in covenant but ended in a cave because of disobedience. When he separated himself from Abraham, he stepped outside the covering of that covenant. This teaches us that when we remain within the covenant of God, we remain under His protection. Therefore, we must learn to honor and respect the covenant relationship we have with God.
Spiritual sleep is dangerous because when a believer becomes careless, the enemy gains access. A sleeping Christian gives the devil opportunity to operate freely. Ephesians 6:13 instructs believers to stand firm and remain watchful. Sadly, some believers live as though they have no spiritual enemies, forgetting that vigilance is necessary in the Christian walk.
How Do I Stay Awake?
1. Repent and Be Refreshed
Hosea 6:1
Repentance restores fellowship with God and brings spiritual renewal. When we return to Him sincerely, He heals, revives, and strengthens us.
2. Renew Your Mind with Godโs Word
The Word of God is not an ordinary book; it is life-giving and transformative. Constant meditation on Scripture keeps the believer spiritually sensitive and alert. Refuse to give in to the devil, and continually stir your spiritual fire through prayer and the Word.
Luke 18:1 reminds us that men ought always to pray and not lose heart.
3. Surround Yourself with Spiritually Grounded People
The enemy often seeks to isolate believers because isolation creates vulnerability. Strong spiritual relationships provide encouragement, accountability, and strength. Peter became vulnerable when he was momentarily isolated, and the enemy used that moment to cause him to deny Jesus.
Conclusion
To remain spiritually awake, believers must stay alert, remain in covenant with God, stand firm against the enemy, and intentionally cultivate a life of repentance, prayer, the Word, and godly fellowship. A spiritually awake believer is not easily overcome because vigilance keeps the door closed to the enemy.
