*The word "independence" rings a positive note in all generations because it is about freedom. The quest for it can hardly cease because independence comes in different forms and levels. For instance, there is political independence - the freedom of a nation to govern itself without external control; personal independence - a person's freedom to manage his or her affairs without being controlled by external forces; and financial independence - the ability to support oneself financially without relying on a job or income from others.*

*Today's text highlights what may be regarded as the ultimate independence, much more desirable than the forms of freedom that people chase endlessly in life. When Christ, at the outset of His earthly ministry, appeared in a synagogue in Galilee after overcoming Satan's temptations in the wilderness, He revealed His identity and mission. He came to set the captives free. He unrolled the sacred manuscript to read the lesson of the day, which turned out to be a passage from the prophecy of Isaiah that principally talked about the Messiah (Himself): "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised. To preach the acceptable year of the Lord." He was, in essence, declaring to the Jews that He was the fulfilment of this prophecy.*

*Christ brought liberation to hopeless sinners and those oppressed by Satan. He preached the message of freedom from sin. He taught on how people can enter and flourish in the kingdom of God. He healed sicknesses of diverse nature and brought deliverance to those held captive by Satan. Talk of independence or freedom; no one is independent who is still under the oppressive control and domineering influence of sinful habits, Satanic manipulation, guilt and inner condemnation.*

*And the emphatic testimony of the Scriptures is that Jesus "went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil" (Acts 10:38). He is still liberating people today from the shackles of Satan, sin, sickness, and sadness through the power of the gospel. Irrespective of the enormity of your sins, the weight of the burden it has imposed on you, or the depth of despair into which you have sunk, if you turn to Christ now in repentance and faith, He will set you free from the judgement God has reserved for all who offend by their character and conduct. You should be wise and seize this moment to change the direction of your life.*

🔑📖```KEY VERSE:``` _*"And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men. Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?" (MATTHEW 22:16, 17).*_

*In 1961, Joseph Heller penned a novel called _"Catch-22"._ Since then, the term has come to describe those tricky situations that create a real dilemma when making decisions. A _Catch-22_ question is like a trap; no matter how you handle the situation, it can be turned against you.*

*In today's passage, Jesus faced a _Catch-22_ situation with the Pharisees and the Herodians. They approached Him with flattery, slyly asking whether it was lawful to pay tribute to Caesar, the Roman Emperor. Was it right to pay the poll tax imposed by the Roman rulers in Judaea then? This question was a cleverly designed _Catch-22_ frame meant to corner Jesus. If He answered Yes, He would be seen as unpatriotic since many Jews viewed the Romans with resentment and saw the tax as a symbol of oppression. Conversely, if He said No, He could be accused of inciting rebellion against the Roman government. It was a question that required discernment and wisdom to navigate.*

*We often face similar dilemmas regarding our spiritual responsibilities and civic duties. This can happen when we are expected to engage in politics or take on social responsibilities in our communities. However, Jesus' response to this tricky question provides a straightforward and timeless solution for such dilemmas: Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and give to God what belongs to God. This means we should fulfil our civic duties, like paying taxes, utility bills and obtaining necessary documents for our vehicles and businesses, etc. At the same time, we owe God our worship, obedience, and unwavering loyalty - those things do not belong to Caesar! We also need to avoid corrupt practices like bribery, which some might mistakenly equate with the legitimate taxes that every responsible citizen is expected to pay. A bribe does not belong to Caesar either!*

*Moreover, unlike the Pharisees, we should strive to be honest in our words. We must be sincere and transparent when we ask questions in the church, not seeking to manipulate, deceive, trap or ridicule our leaders. True Christians are authentic in their conversation and do not harbour hidden agendas. They do not engage in flattery or conspire to trap others. Instead, they have respect for truth and seek it earnestly.*

*James McGranahan's hymn, _If God Be for Us,_ always comes in handy when we are pitted against formidable adversaries in life. The song, which derives from the rhetorical question raised in Romans 8:31, reminds us that if God is with us, we do not need to worry because no opposition can successfully overcome us. In any battle, if God fights on your side, your weaknesses and deficiencies don't count. God loses no battles.*

*Abijah, king of Judah, in our text, armed himself with this consciousness when he went out against the army of Israel under Jeroboam with an army of four hundred thousand soldiers as against Israel's eight hundred thousand soldiers. Although he was not altogether balanced in his assertions about Jeroboam's coming to power in Israel, he nonetheless capitalised on the backsliding and idolatry of Jeroboam and Israel in his address. He talked proudly about Judah's pure worship and faithfulness to the Mosaic Law. This way, he identified with the Almighty God and emphatically appealed to his opponents thus: "O children of Israel, fight ye not against the LORD God of your fathers; for ye shall not prosper" (2 Chronicles 13:12).*

*The outcome of the war was a clear victory for Abijah despite Jeroboam's superior army and tactics. The presence of God with us should afford us comfort, courage, and rest, as well as terrify our enemies. If we have made Jehovah the Captain of our host, there is no need to live in fear. With Him on our side, we can pass through waters and fire and come out unscathed; surmount the most difficult challenge and fight every battle with confidence.*

*Truly, if God is on your side, you have the greatest possible advantage. His power and love far exceed whatever force any potential opposition can muster against you. As you step out today into a world full of uncertainties, have you made the Lord your own Captain? Are you at peace with God? If not, why not humbly go to Him in penitent prayer and by faith accept His provision of salvation and restoration through Jesus Christ, His Son?*

*On November 18, 1978, in what became known as the _"Jonestown Massacre,"_ more than 900 members of an American cult called the Peoples Temple died in a mass suicide-murder, under the direction of their leader Jim Jones (1931 - 78). In the 1970s, following negative media attention, the preacher moved with some 1,000 of his followers to the Guyanese jungle, where he promised they would establish a utopian community. On November 18, 1978, while armed guards stood by, Jones ordered his followers to ingest poison-laced punch.*

*Christ was asked questions in our text concerning the destruction of Jerusalem, the signs of His Second Coming and of the end of the age. In reply, He warned about false prophets coming in His name to deceive many as a sign of His second advent. Wars and rumours of wars will characterise the period with earthquakes happening in quick successions in divers places. The persecution and killings of believers will then increase as the world demonstrates more hatred towards Christ's followers just before He returns. He spoke about the gospel message reaching all nations before the end of the age comes.*

*False prophets have been existing from Bible days. They teach destructive heresies. Scripture tells us that false teachers introduce or bring in damnable heresies deceptively, quietly and secretly. False teachers are very active in every part of the world today and have penetrated the christendom. These are the very last days indeed. And the signs are pointing to the imminent return of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Believers must rise to preach the pure gospel truth to counter the error being peddled by false prophets, who are far more in number now than they have ever been. Let us thus be firmly admonished to be wary of false prophets masquerading as apostles of light.*

*Many times, what gets people into trouble are not big but little things. They omit to do what is right. They indulge in little careless or reckless acts, including those they knew spelt disaster for other people. With the passage of time, they become self-confident in their ability to tackle issues their own way. They dismiss pointers in their own lives to things that caused misfortune for others on the hollow belief that 'it cannot happen to me'. In the process, they seal their own misfortune.*

*Aholibah, or Judah in Israel, had witnessed judgement that came on Samaria (or Aholah) for turning away from God and embracing the nations that did not know the Lord. They were shipped into exile. Instead of learning from God's retribution on evil nations, Judah became more sinful before God. They connived, formed alliances with heathen nations, exposed their treasure to them and served their idols. God paid them in their own coins: He turned their new friends against them, who plundered their wealth and exposed them to shame, humiliation and disgrace.*

*It is only reasonable to learn from the mistakes of other people and avoid things that brought them down. Where we find that the pursuit of power, wealth and pleasure took them away from God, we must flee from such. The lives of those around us who fell out with God should be a lesson to us to shun their ways. Anything that will lull our minds and dull our sensitivity to sinful enjoyment must be avoided. We must not wait to taste the judgment of God. Anything we must do to live right before God and avoid His rod of punishment must be done now. Mercifully, God gives us grace to live the acceptable life before Him. It is thus up to us to fully tap into that inexhaustible grace and present a commendable portrait of glory and beauty, rooted in His love.*

*In the text, a nameless kinsman declines his lawful opportunity to redeem his due and marry Ruth. "I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I mar mine own inheritance." He feared the cost, knowing that the first son from that union would carry the name of the deceased, not his (Deuteronomy 25:5, 6). To protect his estate, he stepped aside.*

*He chose self over sacrifice, and in doing so, stepped out of the divine record. His name was erased from history. Boaz, however, accepted the duty. He embraced what looked like loss. And God engraved his name in glory. Ruth bore Obed, father of Jesse, father of David, forefather of Jesus Christ.*

*Selfishness always loses. It may preserve a name on earth, but it forfeits eternal honour. The nameless relative wanted to keep his legacy pure, but in trying to save it, he lost it. Boaz gained not just a wife, but also a place of prophecy. Beloved, how often do we shy away from what appears to "mar our inheritance"? We avoid sacrificial obedience because it seems costly. We withhold forgiveness, reject hard assignments, or decline kingdom duties because they do not serve our narrative. But heaven writes history through selfless hands. Your sacrifice may go unnoticed on earth, but eternity will echo your obedience. The path of Boaz is not always paved with applause, but it leads straight to Bethlehem, where the Saviour of the world emerged.*

*Do not let fear of personal loss rob you of divine honour. The selfish man saved his estate but missed destiny. Boaz gave his name, and God exalted it.*

*"The good fight of faith", says the American preacher, Pastor A. W. Tozer, "is not just about winning; it's about being faithful to the end."*

*Today's passage talks about a group of six hundred armed Danites, under the leadership of five men, who journeyed to Laish to conquer the city. They killed the inhabitants, burnt the town, took over their idol, and renamed it Dan. Theirs was the wrong kind of fight. Their military prowess did not translate into spiritual victory. They were defeated morally and spiritually. They became idolatrous, an outright disobedience to God's command. They were not wrestling to keep their souls or maintain a good relationship with God and their fellow men but fought for earthly gain.*

*The Christian life is a life of battles. The Lord never promised a trouble-free ride to heaven. Though our arch-enemy has long been defeated on the Cross at Calvary, we must constantly fight the good fight of faith to overcome at the end of the day. The Lord Jesus said we must strive to enter the kingdom, which is meant for all overcomers. In the same vein, Apostle Paul taught that there is a constant battle against the forces of darkness. We are called to not engage in carnal, worthless battles over the vanities of life. Christians do not plot, scheme and fight to dispossess others of their rightful possessions and positions.*

*The Christian contest is not a one-off fight. It is continuous battles; we do not stop until we leave this world and join myriads of saints in heaven who fought the good fight of faith, finished their assigned tasks, and have been welcomed into eternal habitation and rest.*

*Let us ensure we put on the whole armour of God and fight the good fight of faith. We must continually fight against sin, self, and Satan.*
