WHO'S A VIRTOUS WIFE
A *“virtuous wife”* comes from the Bible, mainly *Proverbs 31:10-31*. The Hebrew word used is _eshet chayil_ — literally “woman of valor/strength.”
It’s not about being perfect or quiet. It’s about character, work ethic, and impact.
*WHAT MAKES HER VIRTOUS ACCORDING TO Proverbs 31:*
1. *Trustworthy* – _“Her husband has full confidence in her”_ v11. He doesn’t worry about money, secrets, or her loyalty.
2. *Hardworking + resourceful* – She gets up early, runs a business, buys land, plants vineyards v13-16. She’s not idle.
3. *Provider* – _“She brings her food from afar… provides food for her family”_ v14-15. She contributes economically, not just domestically.
4. *Compassionate* – _“She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy”_ v20.
5. *Wise with words* – _“She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue”_ v26.
6. *Fears the Lord* – _“Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised”_ v30. This is called the source of her strength.
7. *Her family praises her* – _“Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her”_ v28.
*IN PLAIN ENGLISH TODAY:*
A virtuous wife is a woman of strength, wisdom, and initiative. She’s:
- *Reliable* — her husband and kids can count on her
- *Capable* — manages home, work, money well
- *Kind* — helps people outside her house too
- *God-fearing* — her values come from faith, not trends
- *Respected* — because of her character, not just looks
*IMPORTANT CONTEXT:*
1. *It’s not just for wives*: _Eshet chayil_ is used for Ruth, a widow, and for men in battle. It means “person of valor.” Jewish husbands traditionally sing this to their wives every Friday night to honor them.
2. *It’s not about doing everything*: No one woman does ALL of Proverbs 31 every day. It’s a portrait of a lifetime, showing different seasons.
3. *It’s not doormat energy*: She buys fields, runs businesses, and speaks her mind. The “virtuous” part is strength + wisdom, not silence.
*BOTTOM LINE*:
A virtuous wife is a woman of _chayil_ — strength, competence, dignity, and faith — whose life benefits her husband, children, and community.
