CHRISTIAN INFLUENCE AS LIGHT. Dr Steve OGAN
There are five metaphors of light that are important for understanding the Christian influence in society. These are:
THE LORD GOD IS LIGHT: âIn the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of menâ (John 1:1-4).
THE LIFE OF GOD IS LIGHT: âIn Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend itâ (John 1:4-5).
THE WORD OF GOD IS LIGHT: âYour word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path⌠The entrance of Your words gives light; It gives understanding to the simpleâ (Psalm 119:105, 130).
THE SAINTS ARE LIGHT: âYou are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the houseâ (Matthew 5:14-15).
THE GOOD WORK OF CHRISTIANS IS LIGHT: âLet your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heavenâ (Matthew 5:16).
Unless Christians experientially see the Lord and the Word of God as light, they as light cannot exercise their Christian influence in society. Neither will they do good works as manifestations of light. The darkness in the world today can only be exposed and truncated when Christians know who they are in education, the marketplace, government and indeed in every sphere of society. Ephesians 5:13 says, âBut all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light.â
PRACTICAL WAYS CHRISTIAN CAN MANIFEST INFLUENCE AS LIGHT
BUILD A HOUSE OF PRAYER OUTSIDE THE REGULAR CHURCH. âThus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, to all who were carried away captive, whom I have caused to be carried away from Jerusalem to Babylon: Build houses and dwell in them; plant gardens and eat their fruitâ (Jeremiah 29:4-5). âSaying to them, âIt is written, âMy house is a house of prayer,â but you have made it a âden of thievesâ â (Luke 19:46).
GET MARRIED TO INSTITUTIONS. âTake wives and beget sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons and give your daughters to husbandsâŚâ (Jeremiah 29:6a). âNow therefore, what have I here,â says the LORD, âThat My people are taken away for nothing? Those who rule over them Make them wail,â says the LORD, âAnd My name is blasphemed continually every dayâ (Isaiah 52:5).
REPRODUCE YOUR KIND EVERYWHERE. ââŚBear sons and daughtersâthat you may be increased there, and not diminishedâ (Jeremiah 29:6b). âGo therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.â Amen.â (Matthew 28:19-20).
PRAY TO THE LORD FOR LIGHT IN PLACES OF DARKNESS. âAnd seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to the LORD for it; for in its peace you will have peaceâ (Jeremiah 29:7).
BE AN EXAMPLE OF PURITY AND RIGHTEOUSNESS. âYou, therefore, who teach another, do you not teach yourself? You who preach that a man should not steal, do you steal? You who say, âDo not commit adultery,â do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? You who make your boast in the law, do you dishonor God through breaking the law? For âthe name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you,â as it is writtenâ (Romans 2:21-24).
WALK AS CHILDREN OF LIGHT. âFor you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret. But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is lightâ (Ephesians 5:8-13).
ENGAGE IN GOOD WORKS TO GLORIFY THE FATHER OF LIGHTS. âLet your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heavenâ (Matthew 5:16). âEvery good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creaturesâ (James 1:17-18).
