Topic: The Holy Spirit in the Old Testament (Part 1)
Text: Genesis 1: 2; 2: 7; Ezekiel 37: 9-10; Job 33: 4

INTRODUCTION:
As we have been able to establish in the course of our teaching on “The Holy Spirit’s Help,” we have pointed out a number of times the Holy Spirit is a Person and He is the third Person in the Trinity (Mark 1: 11). It would be correct somewhat to say that it was in the New Testament that His work was fully manifested/fully acknowledged; even though He was in the Old Testament, yet He was not too manifest. He worked alongside the other members of the Trinity but it was God who was most manifest. Most of His works in the Old Testament appeared silent but potent.

The Hebrew term used to describe Him was “ruah.” Ruah means “Spirit” in the Old Testament parlance. This same word can be translated as “wind’’ and “breath.’’ We have references in the Old Testament referring to the breath of life from God or wind from God as in Genesis 2: 7, Ezekiel 37: 9-10, 14.

THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THE OLD TESTAMENT:
a. He was active in creation: Someone may ask how? Remember the Spirit of God is the Holy Spirit. In Genesis 1: 2, we see a move by the Spirit of God that hovered over the face of the deep - waiting for the creative word from God to shape the world (Job 26: 13; Psalm 33: 6). In the creation of man, it was the Spirit of God that was given to man as a life-giving breath; thus He is the author of life.

b. Communication of God’s Message to the People: Several times, the Spirit of God was active in communicating the mind of God. For instance, the Spirit of God inspired the Prophets to declare His word to the people (Numbers 11: 29-20; 1 Samuel 10: 5-6; 2 Chronicles 20: 14, 24: 19-20; Nehemiah 9: 30; Isaiah 61: 1-3).

By the special grace of God, we'd continue with the second part of this Series, next week.

God bless you.

BIBLE STUDY - Tuesday, 12th May 2020

“THE HOLY SPIRIT AND SAMSON”
Judges 13, 14, 15 & 16

AIM:
To draw lessons that even though the Holy Spirit is in us, if we lose our focus and neglect Him, the consequences can be great and devastating.

INTRODUCTION:
This Study is on the life of a Judge in the Bible named Samson who was empowered by the Holy Spirit to deliver Israel from her enemies – the Philistines. He was well instructed of the DOs and DO NOTs even before his birth and the same instructions were passed on to him but he was not a careful Judge. He was highly distracted, immoral, lost his consecration and died a shameful death.

STUDY GUIDELINE:
Read Chapters 13, 14, 15 and 16 of Judges and draw lessons for our lives from the text. Lead your family to pray particularly from the lessons noted/taken in the course of this Study.

God Bless You!
