JESUS IS LORD
Pride precedes a fall lots greater than Humpty Dumpty's.
I knelt down quickly by my bedside and began to acknowledge God to thank him for all he had done for me. I remembered the consequences of pride and arrogance on many people and I wasn't ready to fall in the same ditch.
"The wise learns from the mistakes of others and avoids them. But the fool, he doesn't even learn from his. He makes them repeatedly," I thought.
I got set to reply her text.
"All glory to God. I mean, the achievements were never by struggles nor strategies alone, but grace played a paramount role in bringing me to where I am. Thank you for the heartfelt message. I am so humbled.
You and I know that it's not as if I am the most religious person on earth. I'm not even that serious with my faith. Just living life 'cruise and vibes'. I think this is just literally God's mercy extended towards me, bringing my dreams to fruition,"
I wanted to continue typing, but it seemed I was already going deep, 'spiritual' and giving motivational speaker vibes, so I ended it right there!
"You forgot to include your mum's prayers too," she replied.
It soon dawned on me the absolute truth and ideal sincerity in what she said.
Memories came flashing about how prayerful a person my mum was. She stood by my two brothers and I back then before I got the scholarship to study at Chicago.
We were just the average society kids from a humble background. My mother was always going from one prayer mountain to another with our pictures praying fervently upon our future. She never spent any Friday night at home, as long as church vigils held. I couldn't recall any midnight she didn't pray for her children. She also gave alms and sowed seeds on our behalf. No wonder, my brothers and I made it so fast. We were soaring on the wings of grace, watching all we touched turned into gold.
My mother really faced a lot. She married a very abusive husband; my father. They had a turbulent marriage. He was always insulting and emotionally abusing her. Every time, he called her a witch and never saw anything good in her. Most provocative was the fact that he usually insulted my mother in her children's presence. She only kept silence and never gave any word in return. Although, deep down on the inside she was hurt but she chose to apply wisdom. Thankfully, it was all a past story now. No story, no glory.
I was lost in reminiscence.
"Did you know we did not begin this whole conversation thingy with getting to know each other better? Dude we were disconnected for several years. There's so much to talk about.
I suggest we make that dinner party a date. We both could go together. It is just a week away. Let's save the rest of the talks for the actual world, so we could talk one on one," Lucy suggested.
In as much as I was so happy with what he came up with, I thought about Rachel. Since the time we began dating, she was the only lady I went on dates with. Asides, that was my award presentation night. A very important occasion. What lady wouldn't be proud to accompany her fiance to such occasion of great reputation?
"Lucy, I would really loved to, but, my girl and I had planned to make it to the dinner night together. That still shouldn't really be a problem to us meeting up. In fact, I would love to see you alongsides that hot dude Peter at the party. You two would make such a cute couple. How glamorous it would be; a couple-meets-couple round-table dinner date. I'm I making sense?"
She replied me with a thumbs up emoji.
"Okay then," I texted.
"Just make sure you turn up in your most stunning appearance that day. It's just five days away. Come and get them girls drooling. I even trust you. I do see you stun in those designer suits at your speaking engagements"
I smiled, quiet surprised how she knew. Social media and television could really get eyes you are unaware of on a you.
"Okay. Heard you, make sure you also do the same"
"Don't worry about me. I would get your mouth wide open in asterisk wonder"
I started to wonder what she meant by that. I imagined what kind of classy dress she could possibly wear.
"Alright, until then, slay mama. Westwood hotels and suites right?"
"Absolutely. The detailed address is also on the flier on the blog. It is that same big place Zigi had his concert last year"
"Oh wow. I heard about that mega concert too. It shook the whole town, pulling up throng as the whole Westwood got sold out. I couldn't believe Zigi would finally become an accomplished artist. He used to entertain us singing while drumming the chairs in classroom back then. He had this strong love for music, even though he wasn't really that book-smart. He was a pretty good dancer too. He did well at talent nights organised by the school. I am so happy his dream eventually payed off"
"Exactly, you remember him too well. Good retentive memory. He also used to send all of us the links to his songs on websites, and begged us to download them"
"After it all, look where he is today. In life, never say never on your ambitions"
Lucy went offline and never responded to my message.
I yawned tiredly, stretching my shoulders and arm to relieve my stiff joints. My fatigued eyes longed for sleep.
"We might just continue our chat the next day, or perhaps until we meet up at the party," I thought.
Just before going to bed, I went through our interesting chats once again, and it got me really blushing all through. I switched off the lava lamp, and to my phone I did the same.
My exhaustion led me crashing into a deep sleep. Zzzzz
CHAPTER 6: IT'S A LARGE TABLE!
Dining on a large table were Quadnity. They had gone for lunch that blissful afternoon, without Timini this time. It was one of their usual girl hangout in which they disliked the other gender meddling around.
Monica requested that a waiter come increase the intensity of the air conditioner as her handkerchief was drenched with her sweat. She was uncomfortable. JJ also complained about how such a luxurious restaurant could leave potential customers breathing in hot air. That wasn't good customer service.
Rachel suggested that they change seats to an area which was much cooler. It was a glassroom couch corner with less sunlight pe*******on, and two standing giant air conditioners. They bought her idea.
It was a usual thing for them whenever they were out to a restaurant or for shopping that everyone buys as much as they wanted and the one person who the lots fell on pays all the bills in the end. This was a 'rich man's' game to them.
As usual, each one of them submitted their credit cards and went selecting all the intercontinental dishes, seafood, snacks, pizzas, hamburgers, cocktails, and desserts they wanted even up to excess. Some bought extra packaged food they wouldn't be able to consume at that stand, they would be takeaways.
Everyone did it anxious, nervous, kind of unsure, and excited because they didn't know who would pay the heavy bills in the end. No one wished to bear the cost. Anyways, each of the girls made sure she bought as much as possible, in a hope that she wouldn't be the unlucky one to pay up.
Right after the price machine had totalled up the worth of the items purchased, the cashier handed them a receipt of the total items bought. It was worth !
The girls burst into laughter. They felt it was so whooping on just food alone, only a lunch for that matter. They quied up their credit cards behind a desktop system at the price stand and asked one of the waiters to pick up a card at random. Whosoever's card is selected would pay all the bills. Everyone of them cringed in curiosity and sobriety hoping it wouldn't be theirs that was to be chosen.
The igbo man waiter in uniforms called to select a card starred at the four cards, scratching his beards and soon had his arms akimbo. Suddenly, off he goes picking up JJ's card which was the penultimate in arrangement.
"Oh noooo!!" JJ screamed out, cringing and laughing at the same time. Reluctantly, she paid up using the restaurant's POS.
The other girls were so happy. They'd get to feast on an enormous meal without paying a dime. It was a rich man's game, wasn't it?
The happy waiters soon began trooping in their numbers serving their 'It's this type of patronage we want' guests.
The girls joked about what happened. They made fun and laughed at JJ who later manned up. She boasted that her bank account was like an ocean that could never run dry. "How is it like taking just a cup of water from a big lake?" She asked.
They soon began talking some serious business.
"Yeah, that reminds me Rachel.. " Monica began, dropping the food-loaded fork she earlier lifted.
"Have you reached out to the catering company via the contact I sent to you?" She asked.
"Concerning the event IBG is planning? I'm sorry I never gave you a feedback. Yea! I did. The company's name is Lui Chen. I got to check their portfolio, and did a little research online about them. I think I can vouch their credibility, or at least give them a privilege of doubt and try them out, since I don't have any alternative."
"Whichever ways.. I think you should try them out. They might be able to handle food catering services for a big wedding ceremony such as this. Who knows?" JJ Suggested.
Well not as much as you did for today's lunch," Atinuke erupted in laughter, slightly covering her mouth with a hand to avoid food drop. The others joined along laughing hard to her joke.
"Anyways guys, I'm already in talks with the assistant manager of the company. Let us hope something good comes out of this. Cos, I'm always anxious to work with a new brand," Rachel said.
"Exactly, let's hope! Let's ditch that topic. Talking business bores me out. Besides, it's only centred around you. Let's gist about something else," JJ waved off.
Atinuke cleared her throat and drank some water.
"Okay girls, let's do this. Each one of us all will get to tell all of us about something or an occurrence about you that you think we do not know. Maybe a secret too, anything, whatever you think you have stuffed up in your mind. Let's heal together," She proposed.
"Wow, interesting. Who goes first?" Rachel asked looking at each of them one after the other.
"Joycelyn James! Yes you. Today is your day. You go first" Monica exclaimed. She smiled, pointing at JJ. The others were also affirmative about JJ going first.
"You guys really want me to do this? What am I even gonna talk about? My life's been full of crazy occurrences. Why one am I gonna pick..?" JJ gazed up, placing a hand beneath her chin, as she tried to ponder.
"Okay, so there was this guy.. Prince charming, rich and handsome young blood. He worked as an accountant at a big agro-machinery firm.
We met at a movie premiere where he approached me and introduced himself as Richard, told me briefly about himself and requested to be a friend. He wanted to also know me better.
The most pulling thing about this guy was the fragrance of the cologne that dispelled from him. It diffused some bliss I longed to continuously sniff for the rest of my life. Just joking! He caught my fancy, cos I've always have this thingy for guys that smell nice. Not all, he was of average height, little bit taller than I was, and chocolate. My perfect spec!
At first, I feigned the attraction and tried to play hard-to-get. But this guy, he just wouldn't let me be. He was all over me and wasn't ready to let go. Every night and day ever since he had my contact, he never stopped asking 'how was your day?', and 'have you eaten?'..
News flash!... Three months later, we both became Romeo and Juliet. This guy would happily come pick me up from work and drive me to my place. I've lost count of the amount of bouquet of roses he presented to me on his knees.
He gifted me various things; expensive wigs, cakes, a smartphone, wristwatches, necklaces and other jewelleries.. name it!
He was this sweet 'awwww' butterflies-in-my-belly blushing lady's dream man. An helpless romantic. I was also very happy in the safe haven of love I had newly found.
Six months into the relationship, on the day we were supposed to be celebrating our six-month anniversary we earlier planned, the least expected happened.." JJ paused.
"Wait, he cheated?" Monica asked with inquisitiveness.
"Could have been better, lot's better, " JJ responded.
"Monica chill. Let us hear her story uninterruptedly. Remember you still have yours to tell afterwards, " Rachel said, eager to hear JJ out.
"He came to my place to pick me up on our date, and right outside as I was struggling to lock the barricade, a vi****or.. I mean 'my', slipped and fell out of my handbag right to his sight.
My Jesus, words couldn't express how embarrassed I felt. For the first time in my life, I wished mother earth could open up and swallow me at that spot. I got overwhelmed with so much guilt and shame, as tears slowly dripped from my very eyes.
I shyly bent to pick it up to return it to it's place. My red-letter day gradually turned out blue.
I saw the look in his face. Expressions of shock and disappointment resonated from it. His eyeballs shone with disgust. I watched him fume with irritation.
We both held our silence, and pretended nothing happened, till he took an excuse and walked to a corner to fake a call with one of his business colleagues.
"I'm so sorry babe, I can't make the date anymore. I really need to attend to an urgent meeting at the office," He came lying.
I just couldn't say anything. Was glued to a spot, ashamed of myself and anxious of the various kinds of 'nasty thoughts' Richard would have had about me. I only nodded, never gave a word, cos this same man had promised he had nothing else to do that exact day, his phone was switched off all the while, and had never for once saw 'office' as a bigger priority than I was. It was just easy to figure out it was all a lie. I watched him wave goodbye and.. vamoooz.
In tears, I returned into my apartment devastated about that had happened. Beautiful day turned gloomy already.
"This s**t caught up with me eventually," I said sobbing. I was pained I wouldn't get to post my 'chilling with boo' cute selfies and pepper my single friends on social media.
Beyond all that, I had embarrassed myself and dainted my dignity in front of this damn guy with what I thought wasn't a big deal.
I tried so much texting him, to apologise and try to explain stuff, but this guy lett my chats on read. His line wasn't going through anymore. That was how we both got disconnected.
Some months later, I got to bump into one of his friends who was a calm and honest guy, unlike he was. He narrated to me how Richard had spilled the bean to him, and told him about all that happened. He told me about how Richard had insulted and called me names I can not even confess with my tongue.
He comforted me, telling me Richard had never truly loved me in the first place to have been so judgemental and critical of me in such incidence. I thought the same too. Mehn, I cried till there were no tears left to cry. I had fallen too deep for this guy.
He concluded by telling me that Richard was already entangled with some other lady and that he had been transferred to another undisclosed country but within Africa. That made it easier for him to dump me in the trash bin of break-up," JJ narrated emotionally..
"Hmmmm.. Only Jesus loves genuinely," Atinuke heaved a huge sigh..
"If God were like people like Richard, quick to judge and detach, I guess no one would still be existing on this planet," Rachel said.
"Everyone would have literally been in the lake of fire screaming in horror.. Not excluding me," Atinuke added.
"Let’s even not even consider the Richard incident. Talking generally, for real, we shouldn't be too quick to judge people on whatsoever circumstance we find them. We all have fallen short and still do, yet the merciful God forgives and shows us his favours and blessings always. Why then do we condemn a fellow mortal like us? I see many people that because they aren't doing the allegedly 'bad things' others are doing, they have a licence to judge and condemn others. We have too much ignorance and hypocrisy amongst us. I mean we are too quick to judge people and call them names for their deeds, but fail to put ourselves in their shoes, and imagine what we could have done if we were in them.
Sincerely, many of us would have done worse in certain situations. We just haven't been tempted. Who is perfect?" Monica ranted indignantly.
"Besides, if someone is doing something we don't like or rather what we do believe is wrong, why not pray for the person, encourage him or her, correct the fellow with humility, love and a hope to see the better side of such fellow?
What typical Nigerians do is to badmouth the person, backbite, gossip about him or her to someone else saying 'please don't tell anybody' and the person would also go ahead to repeat the same thing and the cycle goes on and on" Atinuke pointed out.
"We would come back to that. Let’s leave that for later. What the guy did was just childish to me. Love kwa?.. Love kill him there.
Thanks for opening up to us Joycelyn. Whose turn, next?" Rachel emptied the last drop of a canned drink into a jute. She tipped her hand with a tossed face.

CHAPTER 1 : RIGHT INTO.
Clause made a successful 3-pointer throw into the basket few seconds right after his ridiculous slam dunk. This got his teammates, opponents and the few spectators around the basketball court pavilion hailing and cheering his name. Though it was just a half-court have-fun-together evening game, Clause gave his 100% proficiency into it as if he was in an NBA finals with the Chicago Bulls, his favourite basketball club when he was back at Chicago before returning to Nigeria after his education.
"Guy, are you high on some energy drink or something? You've been a monster since the game began," Andre his closest friend and opponent said with an astonished gaze as he wiped off beads of perspiration from his face with a towel. The others laughed.
"The muscles and built body can not be for nothing man, consider working on your own body too" Tosin, Clause's teammate replied from a distance.
"Hey the game is all about the body now uhhh? What trash you talking about? Stephen Curry hasn't got all that super big body, yet he's got the record of the most amount of successful 3-pointer shots and greatest shooter in the NBA. Man, there's place for skills, talent, training, experience and sheer hardwork. Height and big body are just added advantages in the game. This, you folks wouldn't just understand" Andre replied, quite pi**ed off.
"Looks like someone is offended, and giving a consolation pep talk you know" Tosin jeered, laughing hysterically.
"Andre is actually talking the truth," said Clause while doing a crossover with the basketball.
"Are you guys going to continue in the game, or you are in for some basketball motivational talk show? By the way, the count is just 27 - 21. It's first to reach 50. So it ain't over yet," an impatient opponent barged.
"Time out!!" Clause and some other tired players briskly walked from the court to go take a nap on a long wooden bench beneath a canopy, after a generally agreed 3-minute break.
A reminder of his to-do list popped up on his phone reminding him of his next agenda for the day as it was already 5:30 pm. Besides, he had missed four phone calls from his fiancee. He knew he had to urgently make up for that, telling her that he was playing a game with his friends, else he would have lots of explanations to make because she was very quick at making suspicions. Sneaking to a corner of the court, he dialed her line. After multiple attempts to no avail, he remembered they had planned a dinner date for that night. She was probably trying to remind him to get prepared.
"Guys, I gotta go" he said sharply to his teammates, as he untied his sneaker laces and packed off his belongings.
"Yesss!! Big dog is leaving. Let's see how y'all will survive in the remaining two quarters of the game" and excited opponent said.
Clause's teammates were a little disappointed. They sadly had to quickly make an impromptu substitution of their most in-form player.
"Alright guys, catch you all later. Au revoir" He waved at them, walking off the courts towards his car.
Andre followed him, helping with his gym bag while Clause carried his sneakers and some other items.
"Yeah, the call, was that Rachel?" Andre asked.
"How did you know?"Clause was surprised.
"Could tell from your facial expressions. You were just so restless trying to return that call. I've always noticed this 'butterflies in my belly' simping attitude anytime you are around that girl. I hope she doesn't serve you breakfast one day" Andre jokingly said.
"No wonder you are single. You are still a bachelor at what age again?"
"I'm killing 33, bro" Andrew replied, he pridefully blew his sweat-drenched face some fresh air with his hand.
"And how long are you going to continue like this? You have been loveless for so many years, even back in our nniversity years at Chicago. Aren't you tired of this pl***oy flirty lifestyle and won't you think about settling down?"
"Settle what?!" Andre laughed. "Life is too sweet for a rich gentleman like me to settle down to only one woman hellooooo? This casanova life is the best man. You get to be with all the girls you want to be with, chase the big bag, spray the dollar, live the la Vida Loca life. Not that I'll be pledging commitment to some sort of woman I want to call a wife. That really seems like bo***ge to me. By the way, come closer I want to whisper something in your ears.. Had my 85th body count yesterday night" Andre said softly.
"Well, good for you. I've waved goodbye to all of that and I'm never going to return to my vomit. It's high time I got serious with life. I love Rachel so much now and I'm intentional about doing everything to protect her trust in me. Matter of fact, we are getting married soon, and I will be referred to as Mr Anderson Clause; husband to Rachel Anderson. And by then, you and other guys will be prohibited from calling me that 'Big Dog' nickname. I'm getting serious about shaping a beautiful lifestyle and leaving a lot of non-profiting things behind.
"Hmmm," Andre giggled, observing him.
They both entered into Clause's luxury Ford Jeep. It was the least of the cars in his fleet.
He only usually brought it to the Sports Complex to avoid unnecessary attention and too much hyping from his friends. He cringes from the bloatful acclaims and unnecessary hype from his sport colleagues. He always avoided his acquaintances from outclassing him higher than themselves. Not driving along his expensive sports cars was a strategy. Sometimes, he preferred to hire a Uber or take a taxi, all in his attempt to appear humble or just look like the rest.
"So have you told her about Lucy, and the incident?" Andre asked.
"You mean Lucy my ex?"
"Of course man, or is there any other Lucy?"
"Bro, she's going to kill me. Rachel is too emotional to handle such story"
"Well, I guess you would have to tell her anyway. It will be worse if she finds out herself."
"Besides, I don't know what this Lucy girl wants from me. Anything like love between me and her is a thing of the past now. Besides, back then, we weren't even in love. That wasn't love. We were just drawn by feelings and having 'fun' together, which was born out of ignorance. I now know what true love is like. It is pure. True love his holy, patient and never self-seeking. It's never about physical intimacy or engaging in some dirty habits like I did in time past. My relationship with Rachel has been an eye opener, as I have learnt a lot of things. I am a changed man now. I don't know why she wants me back," Clause complained, bowing his head on the wheel.
"Who wouldn't love to have the successful oil and gas CEO and chemical engineering master degree holder from the prestigious Chicago State University? The ruddy, towering, prominent and affluent youngin'. A millionaire with a large fanbase on social media. Perfect representation of 'rich and famous'. Guy it's like you don't know you are a hot cake," Andre shook his head, sizing him up enviously.
"Can you please save the famzing for later as I'm not in the mood for any of that now. I'm somehow perturbed"
"If Rachel is as wise and as intelligent as the woman you do describe her to be, I think she should understand you and know that it wasn't your fault"
"I hope so too" Clause exhaled nervously.
"That aside, Am I going to be seeing you at the club tonight? Remember TGIF (Thank God it's Friday)"
"Not tonight. Infact, not anymore. I've given up all of that"
Andre laughed. Don't worry, you would need to clear your head off a mess later in the future. You would drink to intoxication to do so. Worry not buddy, I've got your back" he puffed out his chest.
"You this man sha" Clause smiled at him.
"Alright, greet your little angel for me. Tell her Andre sends his regards" Andre alighted from the car.
"Alright dawg, take good care of yourself, and your bi***es"
The windpanes were wined up, and off Clause zoomed.
CHAPTER 2: RE-UNITED (Clause's POV)
Rachel and I walked down the embassy hallway holding hands. We were happy, and had laughter and joy filled on our faces. Our joy could not be contained as we got one of the biggest surprises of our lives that day. Chief Ogbu, who happened to be Rachel's uncle unexpectedly booked us an exclusive two-week vacation with all expense paid to Santorini Greece for our staycation. We had came to sort out some papers. He suggested we plan towards having a colourful honeymoon. He humbly expressed that this kind gesture was the least he could do towards our upcoming wedding.
He promised to also support it in both cash and kind and make it the dream wedding anyone would ever want to have, despite it still been in a long time away. This I figured out he did because he has always been really proud of the kind of woman Rachel was. I am also. She deserved everything. Everything, I mean my loyalty inclusive.
Rachel stared deep into my eyes. Her beautifully curved smile was so charming. I admired her blue iris, the dimple on her smiling cheek and her precious round lips compelling me for a kiss. She smelt like nectar from the hibiscus of paradise. I was lost in adoration of her face and other physical features. I couldn’t imagine losing this woman. The aura around her was soothing to my soul.
She wrapped her arms over my neck, gazing romantically all over my face.
"I am so happy to be your wife to be your wife-to-be. You make me the happiest woman to ever live on this planet," she said to me.
I stood there so emotional, raptured by the consummation of love. I couldn't hold back my tears. At that moment, I experienced a love that was so real. Love is so great, especially when it is reciprocated. However, it must be with the right person which I believed Rachel was.
"I will forever love you bae. You do mean a lot to me, and I will never take our love for granted. I promise to be a great spouse to the wonder which is 'you'" I said.
We continued to make beautiful love affirmations to each other. These were statements that would attract 'awwwwn' and 'God when?' if listeners were present. Thankfully, they weren't. Rachel and I made it a point of duty to speak love affirmations to each other every time we could. It helped strengthen the bond and assurance between us. We continued laughing and having a chill time relaxing for some time before we left the embassy.
I couldn't wait to see Andre my loveless friend as usual to boastfully narrate to him about all he was missing out on, and if perhaps he could consider a change of lifestyle. He would sarcastically and nonchalantly hear me off, also narrating to me about what I'm missing in the liberty big boy life he was also enjoying. We were used to making fun of each other like this.
As we continued to have a nice time inside our cool car and in each other's company, I observed a familiar figure walking by in close range. She held a suitcase, and strolled briskly with a tall man by her side. They both engaged in some discussion on their way. They wore matching denim pants, black tees and brown huge Chelsea boots.
"Hmmm, couple goals," Rachel whispered in my ear as she admired them.
Taking a closer look, it was vivid their t-shirts were not exactly matching even though they were both black. The lady wore a shirt with a 'TENACITY #27' tag printed on it. This got me even more curious. My graduating set back in high school was the 27th graduating set the school produced at the time. We all had designed that shirt as matching outfits we wore during a hospitality visit to an orphanage in our final week of high school.
I asked myself how she still had it despite 12 years after. Could be a souvenir, who knows?
I was about starting the car, as Rachel and I were about to take our leave from the embassy, but the pricking vacuum of curiosity within couldn't just allow me. I didn’t love to depart without finding out who the lady was, not even with the condition of her not being far away; just walkable metres from us.
"Baby, kindly wait for me in the car. Just give me a few minutes," I said, unbuckling my seatbelt hurriedly.
"I hope there is no problem"
"Nah, absolutely. Just want to figure something out," I kissed her forehead and alighted.
The closer I approached, the more gradually this familiar but peculiar face distinguished who the actual person was. She also saw me and suddenly had the same reaction. Her shape, hips, bursty front and K-legs were features that aided my memory confirm that I had once known the person. But the name!! I almost knocked the living daylight out of my head, racking out what her name possibly was.
"Claus Anderson!!!" she screamed in a high pitch, running towards me in outspread arms.
"Lucy!!!" I came screaming too. Her voice finally helped me distinguish her. How could I have possibly forgotten my ex girlfriend's voice?
She jumped on me, throwing her whole weight upon my arms and shoulders. Her legs wrapped around my aching waist. I hugged her tightly too. I had really missed her. It had been 12 years of being apart. Our meet-up romantic saga took over a minute before she came off me. I panicked a bit because I didn't know how Rachel would feel at that sight. I knew how I felt seeing her hug other guys; which was a cringe of jealousy within. Lucy didn't help matters. She even pecked me! She wasn't ready to let go till I gently shove and began some pleasantly chitchat.
"Oh heavens! Is this you Lucy? Who could have ever thought we would ever ..."
"Shhhhh.." she shushed me. "I've told you times without number when we were dating that the world is indeed a small place," she said with a chuckle.
The man with her was just smiling and frequently bowing his head. I guessed he was just trying to be humble. I greeted him, we shook hands, and he told me he was Peter.I also told him a bit of who I was. I believed he was Lucy's man, and I was so happy for him. He had a good catch. Lucy happened to be one of the most beautiful girls in my class back in school.
Lucy and I talked at length. We had reminiscences of high school memories. Remembering the good, the bad and the ugliest of various experiences that had happened to us and other colleagues got us really cheerful and emotional. We laughed about the times I got in trouble, naughty things we did as kids, and most captivating to us; our old love memories.
Our endless interesting lovey-dovey conversation didn't seem like it was ever going to take a halt till courtesy snapped me out of it. I suddenly remembered I hadn't introduced her to Rachel. My bad!
I held Lucy, and took her to an already pi**ed off Rachel who witnessed the whole drama. What pi**ed her off mostly was the fact that I had kept her waiting for too long. This I was remorseful about, but I was extremely cheerful about the reunion, so my confidence was still on full gauge.
"Rachel, meet my old high school colleague, Lucy. Lucy meet the love of my life, my pillar of cloud by day and pillar of fire by night, the only star in my galaxy, she's the colours in my rainbow, my sunshine, my very first thought in the morning, and the last of nightfall. Here's my fiancee, the one I wanna spend the rest of my life with; Rachel" I said with sarcasm, exploding an atmosphere of loud manical laughter from both girls and the man that accompanied Lucy. The hype really got them. I felt so proud and on top of the world. It's a whole cool feeling having people cracked up like this.
Lucy and Rachel received each other warmly. They hugged and exchanged pleasantries to my amazement. They vibed so well that I supposed they would make great soul sisters if they could get closer. They both had something very noticeable in common; being jovial.
After wonderful get-together reunion moments, exchange of contacts, taking selfies and other exciting activities, it was time each party bid the other a farewell. Though I knew it was a 'see you later' for Lucy and I.
Upon final handshakes before dispersal, Lucy gave me a seductive wink. She also poked slightly at a side of my abdomen while we had a final hug as some sort of signal which I understood. This gave Rachel some impressions she hid till we returned in the car.
"Wait Clause, you're sure she's just your high school colleague?" she asked sternly.
"There you go again. Of course she was. Infact, she was the social prefect during our time. You can tell from her glee. She's such a beautiful soul"
"So, is that all that is between you two?" "Yes! what else?" I replied with a convincing innocent gaze. I couldn't uphold the courage to tell her that she was my ex.
"Then what's all the romantic gestures she has been serving all the while? She even winked at you before leaving. You can't deceive me Clause. I am a woman, so I also understand all of that body language. She is giving you green light right?"
"Hey come down honey. Okay, now tell me how would you feel when you finally set your eyes on your niece that left Nigeria for Auckland 9 years ago? Considering the bond that was between you two, can you describe to me how you would welcome her for the first time seeing her after such a long while," I tackled smartly as she carefully reasoned with my argument.
"She was my closest classmate back in the days. She sat the desk right in front of me. So we were good gisters and close pals. Nothing more. To clear your doubts, you can see she now has a man. And he was as calm as ever, though he was also watching us. Why are you freaking out? Why the insecurity darling?"
Rachel took a long deep breath. "I believe everything is alright, and assume nothing went wrong. But I would say my mind regardless. Please don't mess up in any way. Do not damage an ounce of the trust I have in you. It's really on a very high scale. I wouldn't accept any sort of apology after a blow up, so tread carefully," she said in a soft but piercing tone.
I didn't give a response. Our beautiful day had dulled a bit from the misunderstanding already. I started the car and drove in silence taking her back to her place, minding my business. She didn't talk anymore either, as her smartphone took her attention. I continued driving, meditating about all that had happened.
" 'Once there, forever there' they say. Is it going to be true about me? I should at least find out" I thought as I stuck my tongue out, smiling sheepishly while savoring various imaginations.
CHAPTER 3: THE GIRLS' CAMARADERIE
Rachel found camaraderie in a clique of elites like herself. They were called QUADNITY; 4 of them including herself. They consisted of successful self-established carrier women who were dons of their various fields, money influencing CEOs and owners of wide chains of companies.
Rachel believed in rolling with men of like passions and understood how much impact and influence every friend she kept could have on her. She believed in moving along with people who were very much better and more successful rather than the ones on the same level with her or lower.
"If they are flying, at least you should be running. If they are running, you're on a fast-paced walk. You wouldn't be stagnant when you move with the better. You easily become what you see or who you look up to. You move towards what you place in front of you. And you become like those you move with. Move with junk friends and become junk yourself!" she replied each time anyone insinuated she was a proud person for not always being around the common friends or staff at work.
Quadnity was perfect for her. She was always happy being in the midst of her 3 childhood friends; Atinuke, Monica and the oldest of them - JJ. They had all grown up to become the women of their dreams. Each had established their various business empires, and they were fulfilled doing the crafts they individually enjoyed.
Rachel pioneered the town's foremost event-planning company. She established it when she was just 20. Through the years, she excelled in soaring it to its heights of prominence and success, hereby making it number 1 in town in Lagos. The company having served thousands of clients and corporate organisations, towered her reputation above hundreds of competitors. This was a dream come true for Rachel.
She often remembered her days of little beginnings; the period when she kickstarted IBG Events Gurus right after getting fired from a secondary school where she worked as a classroom teacher. IBG, an acronym for 'I'd Be Great' she formulated in hope of her new venture to thrive, which fortunately did. But if wasn't so for the first five years of start-up. The little capital and labour she solely began with demanded a great deal of wisdom to be utilised.
She faced challenges; got into heavy debts trying to fund her business, had low patronage which was the most frustrating of all, got drained both mentally and physically from excessive work as she couldn't afford hired labour, she got discouraged many times and felt like giving up just like everyone else would. But she had a strong drive deep in the inside never to quit.
She built resilience by daily encouraging herself, dreaming of a bigger future for her company, continously working hard and improving strategies and executional intelligence in running her company affairs. She mastered how to glory in her little and, someway somehow, IBG sprouted up and grew exponentially.
'You only live once' they say, and 'enjoy your life to the fullest while it lasts' are commonly apprehended. Rachel and the girls had driven their way downtown to Joshyl relaxation and Recreation Centre to go have a blast. They danced jubilantly to the loud rock and roll music as they were swimming and having a fun time. Timini who happened to be JJ's younger brother had followed the girls. He drove them there. He got tired of swimming as soon as the sunshine intensified, and left the girls for a cool large umbrella shade. He sipped his milkshake and feasted on some junks while chilling and having a view.
"Go baby girl! go baby girl" the girls cheered excitedly as Atinuke was twerking to a funk music. Atinuke danced so wildly by the poolside. She caught the attention of other swimmers. Rachel soon took over. Hers was even wilder to the amazement of her friends. They never pictured their friend with such erotic dance moves and overall excitedly crazy state. Meanwhile, she was sipping a 11% alc./vol wine.
"It's plenty in the air!!" yelled Monica. Afterwards, she flung her summer hat into the air as they began throwing the soft pool balls at each other, splashing water and playing 'breathe longitivity'; who could last the longest beneath the water surface. JJ won the game and came gasping for air like an hunted deer after a whooping seventeen seconds underwater. The four felt like children over again. All work no play makes Jack a dull boy. They deserved to play after a week-long of hectic work at their various business places.
"Meeeeen, this is worth celebrating," Rachel said with beaming smiles on her pretty face.
"What is worth celebrating?" Atinuke asked, wiping off water from her face.
"Is there any good news?" Monica also wanted to find out.
"Wait, I'm just about telling you guys this?" Rachel asked surprisingly asked.
"Do you remember telling us any exciting news lately? Girls I guess she's tipsy. She's drunk. That wine Timini brought is taking effect," Monica replied, causing everyone to burst into laughter - Rachel inclusive.
"My bad, guys, pardon my manners. My brain has been on cruise these day. Everything laterally escapes my mind," Rachel jokingly made an excuse.
"Of course, Clause is in her life now. That's how people who love is shacking their head behave. Take it easy," said Atinuke jokingly.
"No, that's why you are still single," Rachel savagely replied with a smirk.
"I'm still waiting for your good news o, Mrs IBG" JJ shouted and clapped at Rachel's face trying to call her attention.
"All right girls, you know that multi-million contract I once told you all about ..."
"You mean the one involving senator Yusuf's son's wedding at Dubai?" asked Monica.
"Yes baby, the event planning contract has been awarded to IBG at a whooping 75 million," Rachel screamed.
There was celebration and popping of wine in the air. The girls loved to celebrate their wins. 'A win for one is a win for all' they believed. The jubilation soon caught Timini's attention, causing him to hurriedly abandon the shade and jump into the pool to the girls.
"Oh yeah, what's popping? Someone should yarn me nahhh" he asked, eagerly seeking to know what was going on.
"It's Rachel. She has bumped upon the god of fortune and collided with the goddess of goodluck," Atinuke replied.
"Meaning?? I don't understand" Timini was confused.
"Rachel's company was awarded an event planning contract that involved a lot of money," JJ expantiated. Timini was astonished.
"Someone is getting 75 million Naira richer.. Oooww!" Monica said jubilantly.
"Hey hey. You all calm down o. I'm working with a whole lot of other service providers. Many other people will have their cut for their various team's collaborative efforts. There are so many costs to count. Please get it. I will pay the bride and groom fashion designers, interior decors, guest musicians, chefs and caterers, for the photo and video event coverage, bouquet, accessories, rentals amidst other costly expenses. I just pray I get a good cut at the end of the deal and make profit. This contract thingy is sometimes not as mouth-watering as people perceive it to be.
I remember once executing a contract that I didn't make any profit at the end. This was in the early days I began. Anyways, I did it for one broke and entitled-feeling client who didn't even appreciate my effort at the end of the deal. Who knows, perhaps that's why God's bringing big contracts like this my way today"
"I'm so so happy for you dear" Monica said, giggling at her friend.
The fun and celebration continued for few more hours. Rachel soon lost vibe as she began to strategize how to execute the project before her successfully. She left the pool, toweled and sat at an isolated corner. She brought out a paper and began to jot randomly as ideas were being inspired.
"Hey guys, I'm in need of someone who deals with video and photo events coverage. I'm also in need of a brand that deal in cakes and confectionery. Do you guys know anyone?" Rachel shouted from her seat to her fun-carried-away friends.
"JJ's brother is a photographer. So I think he can handle the first expect," Atinuke replied her.
"Yeah yeah. Timini is a very good photographer. He has worked with many big brands in Lagos. I think he will do a good job if a good pay is attached," JJ added.
"Oh, okay. Thank you so much, noted. Does any of you know any cake and confectionery brand? Generally, any big brand that deals with catering with years of experience and proof of competence. I would love to check out their portfolio," said Rachel.
" I think I got a business card from a lady sometimes last week, can't really remember. I think she deals with something like that. I would help you check when I get home. I will snap it and forward it to your dm,"Monica said.
"Oh thank you for such benevolence. How blissful it is being around you guys. Two heads are better than one. You guys have made my planning snappy. I will begin work properly in the office on Monday. Let us continue the fun. She put the paper in a page of a book and kept it in her handbag.
"Timini! We have work to do" she said in a sarcastic but commanding tone.
"Yes ma'am, I'm always at your service," Timini said, throwing a salute like a boy scout. This got the other girls laughing...
CHAPTER 4 : FANTASII AND FANTAS-HIGH
The months waved by like ripples of water tossed by the strong wind.
"Andre, a whole hot has been happening lately. The last couple of months have been full of the good, the bad and the ugly," said Clause as he served his friend some coffee in a mug. Andre had come on an impromptu visit to Clause's office at nap time.
"Yeah, thanks man," he appreciated.
He unknotted his tie and pulled some buttons off his shirt to feel more at home. Clause did the same thing too. He pulled off his grey suit and hung it around his office chair. Afterwards he tucked out shirt and completely unbuckled his belt which made him seem somehow like a tout.
They always loved being free and casual around each other. Clause's employees mustn't had seen him like that. Hence, he ensured the door was well bolted behind, because he has always been the one keen about the proper and corporate dressing of his own employees. He went to the extent of imposing some threats of sanction to any erring worker that was caught.
"Wow, the boss is the one breaking the rule today uhhh.." Andre sarcastically said while he glanced at Clause's appearance.
"Oops, I am the law here. I make it and I break it. No one else dares to do so. I call the shots bro,"
"Clause do you still remember how you embarrassed that your sales auditor girl.. Chika or what's her name, for not complying to the office dress ethics that day?"
"That is not important. They all work for me. They live by my rules. Anyone that is not cool with that can.. weeew!! Millions of people outside are dying to be hired by this company. Back to what we were saying,"
"Yeah, yeah.. back," Andre stopped sipping the coffee, folded his arms and payed rapt attention. "I wasn't getting you the other time. You were saying something like 'good bad and ugly' can you expantiate what you were trying to say?"
Now Andrew was Clause's closest friend. There was not a tiny bit of detail in Clause's life that was mysterious to Andre.
Clause smiled sheepishly. He took a deep breathe.
"Where do I even begin from?" he asked scratching his head.
" Imm'a help you out. Let’s begin with 'the good'. Yeah, the good. What's good!?"
"Great! About this time last week, I got a mail from my Alma mater's old students Union. It was one of the most incredible mails I ever received. It stated that I was selected to be the recipient of the Alumni of The Year award. The write-up was so incredible. It stated my various achievements in the year; my feats in the Oil and Gas Industry, my various speaking engagements on big platforms such as the African commonwealth summit and TED, my skyrocketed online presence, because I have made 2.1 million additional followers on Instagram. Hence, I got more brand deals and endorsements beyond my imagination. It was so big that a particular telecommunications company I had a deal with had my images displayed on several billboards and screenboards in several locations in town. It all felt great. I never sought for the fame that is currently pushing me upfront into the spotlights. So many people crave for what I have now. I now have a name that carries great reputation and dignity. Am I talking too much Andre?" Clause was a bit puzzled, wondering if Andre could relate.
"Of course, I knew about all of that, and I'm so proud of you man. It's only the award part was news to me. I am just getting to hear about that now. Kindly accept my big congratulations on your selection for that prestigious award. Considering the kind of high school you graduated from, the calibre of great people in the society that your high school produced, I think it's such a privilege to deserve that amongst several successful and accomplished entrepreneurs, musicians, businessmen, people who have grown up to become politicians, renowned academicians and many more. Friend, I'm so happy for you"
"You have always been. Thanks dawg. I've come to discover that people who love and are happy for the success of others are mostly happy people. And here you are, such a happy lad," Clause poked at him as he smiled.
" I am not only happy, but also successful. I mean, you can't give what you don't have. A truly successful person should want others to be successful as well, rather than feel threatened. One who is truly at the top would only pull people up to the heights. He'd let down the ropes. He that is beneath cannot pull anyone up. He is rather a down-drag. That's the case of people who don't want others to make it," Andre said pointing his finger downwards.
"No lies man. That was it, but, I wished the story ended with 'the good'"Clause said soberly.
"Okay, next one. 'The bad' right?" Andre asked smiling.
"Andre, do you still remember FANTASII?"
"Of course I do. That's the largest division of your chemical companies," Andre replied.
"That's exactly the saddest part of it. Andre, I'm about losing one of my biggest investments," Clause suddenly became vulnerable.
"Really? Can you tell me what's going on? What do you mean?"
"For about a year now, shareholders filed a lawsuit against FANTASII of conspiring and accusing FANTASII's executives of backdating options. They also claimed FANTASII propped financial reports, which ain't true. Asides, some of our products were counterfeited, bootleged and sold to consumers by some unknown people. It had an harmful turnout and irritation on them after consumption, as they were substandard. Our brand was used for the perpetration of such deeds. Andre, we are in a severe prosecution by the NDLEA. This is serious trouble,"
"Any action taken towards protecting and fighting for your venture and his reputation?"
"So many, trust me. I wouldn't open my eyes and watch what I have struggled and labored to build fade away like a wisp of smoke in the harmattan. I've been giving this a tough fight. Also, our company attorneys are not resting on their oars either. More investigations are being carried out to fish out the actual perpetrators of these. Can you imagine bad people using our brand identity to do such? The court has not been helpful. They keep adjourning the case endlessly"
"Anyways, the Clause I know is a winner. I trust the judgement to turn out eventually in your favour. And I believe you will not lose your company, even though it's just one of many," Andre said, and they both laughed.
"Dude, how did you even come up with that name FANTASII? From FANTASY I guess," Andre inquired, quite amazed.
"You could figure out the pronunciation is quite different from 'Fantasy'. It is pronounced FANTAS-HIGH. I was in the toilet taking a s**t one particular day after developing a constipation after an enormous meal I earlier devoured. As I sat there for quite a long time, I was having a high fantasy of the future. I was daydreaming of how great I wanted to be. I imagined owning a big venture. And suddenly, the activity at that point inspired the brand name of the venture. High Fantasy. Hooray! Without cleaning up, I ran from the WC seat to go pen down the name FANTASII, styled up. I had the excitement of Achemedes that made him come running out naked and screaming "Eureka!" after his discovery. And today, my friend, it is a reality. No more a fantasy. Everything is created two times. First as a thought, then eventually as a thing. First in the mind, eventually in the physical"
"Dreamer boy! That's my Joseph!! Wonders shall never end. Revelations from the toilet. That's so ridiculous," Andre laughed hysterically.
"You see one problem with many of today's generation young adult is they are too distracted. They are too carried away they cannot receive vision. This, because their minds are congested too much social media, TV, video games and excessive play. No mental solace. This played a part in distracting people from receiving inspiration, dreaming big, improving their gifts, sharpening their creativity and innovativeness. It's a hard thing for many now to think out of the box. No inspiration anywhere, no strategic thinking about tomorrow. We just get productively occupied with unproductive things. So to discover purpose suddenly becomes a problem," Clause said.
"You ain't lying man. I sure do believe everyone is responsible for the outcome and turn-out of his own life. No such thing as fate. Nothing called luck. There may be unmerited favour and privileges on some occasions, but nothing happens as a coincidence. Where you invest is where you will harvest. Achievement is an intentional process. Period!" Andre pinpointed.
"So what are you up to today friend?" asked Clause.
"I actually planned after work to visit you and get the gist. Afterwards, I'm off to the golf club. I have placed a huge bet already. One bald millennial has challenged me and risked his newly received gratuity. I also placed a huge fortune on the line. Let's see who wins. I'd really love to use someone's hard-earned money to ball"
"This boy, you haven't stopped gambling," Clause made fun of him, laughing.
"My heartbeat will stop before I do. I can't imagine ever beating this habit. Guy, I've lost so much to gambling, yet I just remain a stone-head"
Clause was cracked up by what Andre said.
"Yeah!! Lest we forget, the last part; the ugly. Let me have the gist," Andre reminded him.
" 'The ugly'... Hmmm! It's a long story.. "
CHAPTER 5: RECONNECT-SATIONS
It was a rainy evening a day on my way returning from work.
I decided to park at a spot by the roadside as the fog ahead of me was quiet obstructive. It was a hard time driving. My car wiper had done its best wiping water rigorously off the windscreen. But, it wasn't just enough. The downpour was just too much, as it rained cats and dogs.
I tuned on to a football radio station to get the updates as it's been a long while I had watched football. This been because I was a real busy man who had almost no time sitting in front of the TV screen.
The sport analyst was talking about the big feats and achievements of Liverpool which was my favourite football club in Europe. I was excited hearing the news that Mohamed Salah our wingman finished as the highest goalscorer and won the golden boot of the season. My club had also won a treble; three domestic trophies though.
Sadly, towards the time I tuned in for the update, the sport analyst was rounding up his commentry. The show was over. Then came in commercials, all sorts of advertisements, jingles and some old school music that was hearing me off.
Disappointedly, I turned off the radio, picked up my phone and started scrolling through Facebook. Been absent from the app since forever, so trust me there were cobwebs and dust.. haha.
4562 friend requests, 514 unread messages. Let's not talk about my notification tab. I was pi**ed off.
Regardlessly, I still decided to continue to hop on the fun of just scrolling through, and browsing through all I had missed. I tried randomly accepting some friend requests.
Soon, I encountered one with a seemingly familiar profile picture. Username; Lucy Uwagwu.
Wow! it was Lucy; my lately reunited school colleague and ex girlfriend. I was curious. That was it for the rest of the other friend requests .I was no longer accepting any more. Thank you for the day.
It was time to begin stalking on Lucy. I readjusted, sat more comfortably and unbuckled my seatbelt, ready to delve into something that appeared interesting.
"I'm going to stalk this girl's every tiny detail," I soliloquized smiling. I was jittering too, being really eager. Clicking in on her profile, I saw a few information about her.
Went to Leicester high.
B.sc in Home economics and M.sc Family Nutrition.
Assistant manager at Lui Chen.
Food host at Joshyl TV.
In a complex relationship.
Followed by 24k people.
Written in our bio was;
" Self-proclaimed superstar. Wonder Woman. I'm ambitious. I see it, I want it, and I get it. Don't cross my lane. Jovial and fun to be around with"
Wow! quite interesting. Whatever ways, she wrote the truth.
Lucy was a daring lady right from high school. I have observed her strong determination win her her heart desires. And she never quits. Only that she mustn't use her drive in the negative way. It could be disastrous.
I nodded my head in agreement with the "jovial and fun to be around". It was over-true. Her sweet personality and liveliness were part of what led to my persuasions of her to be my girlfriend back then.
I clicked on the "Lui Chen" which was an hyperlink on her bio. It loaded out to be a business page which had 140k likes.
It was described to be a chain of top restaurants in different locations in south west Nigeria. Included was that Lui Chen had culinary schools that trained people to become professional certified chefs and caterers. It also handled event services. The company's contact, email address and website were included at the profile page.
The profile picture displayed a magnificent high-rise commercial building with a "Lui Chen" banner at the topmost of it. I figured it was probably her headquarters.
I was really excited and amazed that Lucy was the assistant manager of such a thriving place.
Yeah! it was about time for me to begin to stalk on her pictures like some jobless boys do.
The heavy rain had actually stopped. The highway before me was clear now. It was only showering drizzles. I was just too caught up and couldn't give up on my exciting exploration, which led me to being oblivious of the honking of some cars behind me.
I suddenly remembered after a deafening honk from a large lorry that I needed to park properly. I did, under a tree at a nearby church's carpark.
Lucy's pictures were so much. She captured her every moment and every activity. It ranged from pictures at workplace, to pictures of her eating at a Lui Chen's exclusive cafeteria, to pictures at her cooking show, pictures with friends, boarding a plane, driving, cooking, having fun, receiving an award at work, shopping.. It was just endless. My God! This girl was really social media obsessed.
I tried hard to find at least a picture of her with Peter; the guy she wore matching fits with at the embassy. Astonishingly, I found none. I thought it was impossible for a social media obsessed lady not to think about posting a picture with her man. It was quite surprising. The only pic I found Lucy with a man was a selfie at a swimming pool with a bald bearded man who posed behind her. She wore a swimming trunk and a shower cap drenched in the water. They both seemed not to have anything together, as they probably were just friends.
On and on, I continued scrolling. I promised to be careful to only like the latest pictures in order to avoid any suspicion on what I was doing.
I came across several pictures of her when she was much younger, which luckily weren't deleted. I saw some pictures of her at Leicester high school receiving a medal during one of the inter-house sports competitions, at the graduation ceremony, school excursions, and funnily.. a selfie of me and her in an empty classroom.
I laughed so much starring upon our very young 'immature' faces. Pimples really feasted upon my face back then, and I only rocked scodo; no hair. We thank God for life. I was now a 'fine boy no pimples' and I looked good rocking my afro. I didn't hesitate to take a screenshot of the picture. As it could serve as a souvenir.
I quickly accepted her friend request. Afterwards, closed tabs immediately and checked my wristwatch. I had unknowingly spent hours surfing social media.
Twilight was drawing nigh, the view getting darker, the weather cold, streets deserted, and the birds gone to roost. I still had miles ahead. I turned on the flashlights to aid my vision, as the streetlights at that location weren't even lit. They were probably just there for decoration.
I started the car. The engine revved loudly. Right after, I pulled the gear lever on drive and stared forward as I grabbed the steering tightly. I was upbeat as if I was set to begin a Formula 1 race. I was determined to regain the time wasted on a zoomed journey. The tyres squealed vehemently on the slippery asphalt but I didn't care!
With my foot heavy on the accelerator, in a blink, I rode in the whirlwind.
Upon returning home, I crashed like a log of wood upon my succulent chaise longue. Then, my phone beeped with message notification from my pocket. I was too tired to respond to anything at that moment, so I procastinated.
I left the chair for the bathroom to take a shower. My teeth gnashed together and I shivered like a chick while I toweled up, as the late night was so cold.
Jumping upon my bed, I crawled quickly to the windows to ensure the shutters were tightly closed, because I wasn't ready to die of hypothermia. I stretched to switch on my new fancy larvae lamp on the bedside table for illumination. Afterwards, I got totally wrapped up in my duvet.
I had eaten more than enough after work during the afternoon. What I had was enough for lunch and dinner combined, so I was very okay.
Since sleep decided to betray me despite my exhaustion, I decided to attend to my phone in the meantime.
Lo and behold, what I recieved earlier on were Facebook inbox messages from Lucy.
" Hello sweetheart.
Glad you finally tended to my ages-pending friend request. It's exciting to connect back with you" The messages read.
The fact that she has been anticipating and expecting me to accept her friend request all the while was quite surprising.
"Hi Lucy! Good eve. How are you and how is the weather over there? So great to finally connect with you on social media.
Also, I'm sorry for the late request acceptance. I'm hardly here," I responded, and in no time I saw the three dots indicating she was typing back!
"Hey, good evening my love. I'm doing fine.
About the weather, it is weather for two.. Haha!
Isn't it amazing how social media is reconnecting the world back together?"
I was a bit baffled. I was like "who is 'your love'? Isn't this girl with another man?"
But, I feigned it away, and regarded it as a mere pleasantry.
"You are right. The social media RECONNECT-SATIONS are quite intriguing. The RECONNECTion and converSATIONS that takes place between separated people despite the distance barriers has been really beneficial to the world.
Also, my apologies for not reaching out to you despite you giving me your contact at the embassy after we met. It slipped off my mind. I carry way too many things with this single brain," I texted, including a laughing emoji at the end of the text.
"Of course I was about to demand an apology for that. You can't fathom how expectant I have been for this day to come," she included it with a cat-laughing emoji.
"You see it, you want it, you get it, don't you?" I blushed sheepishly behind the screen while typing this.
"You know me too well. Anyways, let me text you via WhatsApp. We could talk better on an instant messaging," I suggested.
"Perfect! I was about to say that I'm not so good at conversations here"
I didn't bother to reply. I opened my contact list on WhatsApp to send her a DM. I found her and clicked on her dp. It was an e-flier photograph of Lui Chen.
I was amazed at the passion she had for her work, as most people of her type could have preferred to upload the hottest picture on their gallery.
In no time, I already saw the 'typing' indication, which also signified that she was online. I waited to get the text she was typing but it delayed for long. I wondered the long stuff she was typing.
I opened the Angry Bird game app to play pending the time. Few minutes after completing the daily quest and receiving some gems, Lucy's messages popped in.
"Words would fail me to describe how happy I was when I saw your picture in the old students' association's blog above an article announcing your selection for the alumni of the year at the 35th dinner and awards night.
I was walking on air, dancing all over the place. In my mind, I was like; 'that's my guy'
I tried reaching out to you, then I remembered it was you who had my contact and not the other way round.
I went fishing out for you all over the internet and I stumbled upon your FB and then your IG. I was stunned by the large online following you have. Mehn, you are a celeb. Well, people are gradually complying with the 'follow who know road' opinion. You are an inspiration to many people.
Interesting it was reading the article about your feats during the year on the blog. Oh my words! The writers and editors were so good composing it up. I remembered coming across a line that went like 'Clause, the jack of all trades who's got no clauses in his contract with success' hilarious!
I mean, it's intriguing how you suddenly condensed into the realm of affluence in less than how many few years?"
At the point I was done reading her text, I got really emotional. I felt indecisive at the junction of choosing profound gratitude to God for the achievements, or self-praise and sheer entitlement towards them. The former because at some point during the struggles in my life, I saw God's hand of unmerited favour. The latter because I give it to all it took and worked my ass off, so I felt I deserved them eventually.
Fanning my face with a hand, I stuck out my tongue in an exhilarated smile full of boast, as my mind was completely blown up. I flexed my shoulders wide and raised my head up high. Reading her text gave me a feeling out of this world.
Having continued that long enough, It occurred to me to dispose the prideful feeling in the bin of humility. I know I needed to deflate my swollen head of it's hubris. I felt a little remorseful because I had allowed this thing called pride enter my head. That's what the praises of men does anyway, if not well handled. It gets you bloated up, till you open your eyes to find yourself in a pit.
