Homily of the New Year Mass
Title: The Power of Interior Silence
By Fr. Anthony Adepoju
At the beginning of this new year, Fr. Anthony Adepoju reminded us of the message from the New Year’s Eve homily: we are not better than those who were not privileged to see the year 2026. The gift of life is not something we earned, but a pure grace from God. This awareness should make us humble and grateful.
Today’s homily focuses on Mary, the Mother of God and Patroness of the Church. The Church also celebrates the World Day of Peace on this first day of the year. These two celebrations invite us to reflect on peace, humility, and the power of interior silence.
Fr. Adepoju noted that our world is filled with noise. Many people constantly announce their achievements, especially on social media. While sharing good news is not wrong, it can become an act of pride when it is done without giving glory to God, the true source of every success.
He reminded that silence is a golden virtue. It places a person above his or her enemies because, as the saying goes, only empty barrels make noise.
Mary’s life clearly shows the value of silence. When the angel brought God’s message to her, she did not argue or rebel. She responded with a silence of trust in God.
"I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word.” Through this interior silence and obedience, God worked great things in her life, and today the whole world calls her blessed.
As we journey through the new year, the parishioners are encouraged to endure our challenges the way Mary did. We should reflect on the difficulties she faced and the victories God granted her.
Fr. Anthony urged everyone, especially social media users, to practice logical and purposeful silence online, and give glory to God always.
He concluded by reminding everyone that silence and reflection on God’s word will always draw us closer to Him. We must always think before we speak—in moments of confusion, uncertainty, and even at the height of our success.
According to the Pope, Pope Leo XIV, our peace must remain unarmed. Without God in our lives, there can be no true peace in the world.
