OCTOBER 13TH 1917 APPARITION

The Miracle of the Sun

Opening her hands, Our Lady shone the light issuing from them onto the sun, and as she rose, her own radiance continued to be cast onto the sun.

At that moment, Lucia cried, "Look at the sun!"

Miracle of the sun
Once Our Lady had disappeared in the expanse of the firmament, three scenes followed in succession, symbolizing first the joyful mysteries of the rosary (the Holy Family), then the sorrowful mysteries (Our Mother of Sorrows; Our Lord on His way to Calvary blesses the people), and, finally, the glorious mysteries (Our Lady of Mount Carmel).

While these scenes took place, the great throng of 70,000 spectators witnessed the miracle of the sun.

It had rained all during the apparition. At the end of the conversation between Our Lady and Lucia – when the Blessed Virgin rose and Lucia shouted, "Look at the sun!" – the clouds parted, revealing the sun as an immense silver disk shining with an intensity never before seen – though not blinding.

This lasted only an instant. Then the immense disk began to "dance;” the globe of fire seemed to tremble, shake, and then plunge in a zigzag toward the terrified crowd.

All this lasted about ten minutes. Finally, the sun zigzagged back to its original place and once again became still and brilliant, shining with its normal brightness. The cycle of the apparitions had ended.

Many people noticed that their clothes, soaking wet from the rain, had suddenly dried.

The miracle of the sun was also seen by numerous witnesses up to twenty-five miles away from the place of the apparition.*

October 7: Feast of 🌹🌺🌷 Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary 💐🌸🌺

~ Catholic My Pride

The Feast of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary, celebrated annually on October 7, is a profound and beautiful reminder of the power of prayer, especially the Rosary, in the lives of Catholics. This feast, established by Pope Pius V in 1571, commemorates the pivotal victory of the Christian forces at the Battle of Lepanto, a victory attributed to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary through the recitation of the Rosary.

Historical Origins: The Battle of Lepanto
The roots of this feast go back to October 7, 1571, when a coalition of Christian forces, known as the Holy League, faced the Ottoman Empire in the famous naval Battle of Lepanto. At the time, the Ottoman Turks were a significant threat to Christian Europe, and their victory could have paved the way for the spread of Islam into Western Europe. In response to this imminent danger, Pope Pius V called upon all Christians to pray the Rosary, imploring the Virgin Mary to intercede for a successful outcome.

Despite being vastly outnumbered, the Christian fleet achieved a decisive victory over the Ottomans. This victory was seen not only as a military success but as a miraculous intervention by Our Lady, to whom the faithful had prayed fervently. To honor this divine intervention, Pope Pius V instituted the feast of "Our Lady of Victory," later renamed "Our Lady of the Rosary."

Significance of the Rosary
The Rosary has long been regarded as a powerful tool for spiritual warfare, meditation, and devotion. It invites the faithful to contemplate the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ through the eyes of His mother, Mary. Each of the 20 mysteries of the Rosary — divided into the Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious, and Luminous Mysteries — provides a rich framework for deepening one's faith and relationship with God.

October 7, as the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, is not only a historical commemoration but also a celebration of the deep spiritual significance the Rosary holds. It serves as a reminder that through prayer, particularly through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin, God’s grace can intervene in the most challenging of circumstances.

Our Lady’s Role in Salvation History
Our Lady's role in salvation history is central to this feast. As the Mother of God, she has a unique position in heaven, and her intercession has been seen as a powerful aid in times of need. The Battle of Lepanto stands as one example of many instances where the faithful have turned to Mary for help. The Rosary itself is a reflection of her role in bringing us closer to her Son, Jesus Christ.

The Catholic Church teaches that the Rosary is not just a repetitive prayer but a meditative journey that deepens our understanding of Christ’s life and fosters a personal relationship with Him. Each decade of the Rosary invites reflection on key events of Jesus' and Mary’s lives, thus aligning our prayers with the core tenets of the faith.

Celebrating the Feast of the Holy Rosary Today
On October 7, Catholics around the world come together to honor Our Lady and the powerful prayer she gave to the Church. Many parishes host special Rosary processions, Masses, and prayer services. It is also a day for individuals to reflect on their own devotion to the Rosary and consider how they can incorporate this powerful prayer into their daily lives.

For those who may not have the habit of praying the Rosary regularly, the feast is an invitation to begin this beautiful practice. In a world often filled with chaos and uncertainty, the Rosary offers a sense of peace and direction, drawing us closer to God through the loving hands of Mary.

Conclusion: A Prayer for Our Times
As we commemorate the Feast of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary, we are reminded of the tremendous power of prayer, especially in times of need. Just as the Christian forces triumphed at Lepanto through the intercession of Mary, so too can we turn to her in our own battles — whether spiritual, emotional, or physical.

The Rosary remains a timeless gift to the Church, a pathway to peace and a source of strength in our faith journey. May we, like the faithful of old, turn to Mary with confidence, knowing that she always leads us closer to Christ. Our Lady of the Rosary, pray for us!

These archangels hold a significant place in Christian tradition and scripture, serving as messengers and warriors of God. Each has a distinct role and mission, making them powerful figures of faith.

St. Michael

St. Michael is often depicted as the leader of the heavenly armies, a warrior against evil forces, and a protector of God's people. St. Gabriel
St. Gabriel is known as the messenger of God. He appears in the Bible delivering important messages, most notably to the Virgin Mary during the Annunciation, informing her that she would conceive and bear Jesus, the Son of God. Gabriel also appeared to Zechariah, foretelling the birth of John the Baptist.

Role: Messenger of God's will and herald of divine announcements
Patronage: Communications, postal workers, broadcasters, and those delivering news

St. Raphael
St. Raphael is known as a healer and guide. His story is told in the Book of Tobit, where he heals Tobit’s blindness and helps his son, Tobias, on his journey. Raphael's name means "God has healed," and he is invoked for healing, safe travels, and guidance in important decisions.

Role: Healer, guide, and companion to those on a journey
Patronage: Travelers, the blind, physicians, and those seeking healing
Symbol: Fish (representing healing from the story of Tobit) and staff

The Feast Day

The September 13, 1917 apparition is part of the famous series of apparitions reported by three shepherd children-Lucia dos Santos, and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto-in Fátima, Portugal. These apparitions are believed to have been of the Virgin Mary and are central to the Catholic devotion known as *Our Lady of Fátima*.

The Context:

In 1917, beginning on May 13, the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to the children on the 13th of every month for six consecutive months. These apparitions occurred during a time of great political upheaval and instability, as World War I was ongoing and tensions were high in Portugal.

The September 13, 1917 Apparition:

By September 13, the apparitions had drawn significant attention from people all over Portugal. Thousands of pilgrims accompanied the children to the Cova da Iria, the location of the apparitions. Many came seeking miracles, healing, or simply hoping to witness something supernatural.

On that day, a large crowd of approximately 30,000 people gathered. As Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta began to pray the rosary, they noticed something extraordinary. The crowd saw unusual signs in the sky, such as a ball of light or a sort of luminous cloud that descended near the tree where the children usually saw the apparition. This phenomenon was visible to many in the crowd, though they could not see the Virgin Mary herself.

The Message:

During this apparition, the Virgin Mary spoke to the children once again. According to the accounts, she encouraged them to continue praying the rosary daily for an end to World War I. She also told them that in the next month (October), she would perform a miracle so that everyone could believe the authenticity of the apparitions. This promised miracle would later become known as the famous "Miracle of the Sun."

The Aftermath:

The September apparition heightened expectations and anticipation for the final apparition, which was scheduled for October 13, 1917. Crowds continued to grow larger, with even more people drawn to the Cova da Iria in hope of witnessing the promised miracle.

The events of October 13 would culminate in what many described as the "Miracle of the Sun," witnessed by tens of thousands of people, and would cement the Fátima apparitions in the religious consciousness of the Catholic world.

This series of apparitions, especially the September 13 event, remains a significant part of Catholic history, fostering devotion to Our Lady of Fátima and leading to widespread pilgrimages to Fátima, which continues to this day.
