✝ MASS READINGS

🙏FIRST READING
1 Peter 1:10-16

A reading from the first letter of Apostle Saint Peter

Beloved:
Concerning the salvation of your souls
the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours
searched and investigated it
investigating the time and circumstances
that the Spirit of Christ within them indicated
when it testified in advance
to the sufferings destined for Christ
and the glories to follow them.
It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you with regard to the things that have now been announced to you by those who preached the Good News to you
through the Holy Spirit sent from heaven,
things into which angels longed to look.

Therefore, gird up the loins of your mind, live soberly,
and set your hopes completely on the grace to be brought to you
at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Like obedient children,
do not act in compliance with the desires of your former ignorance
but, as he who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in every aspect of your conduct, for it is written, Be holy because I am holy.

The Word of the Lord.

🙏Responsorial Psalm
Psalm 99: 1, 2-3ab, 3cd-4

THE LORD HAS MADE KNOWN HIS SALVATION.

Sing to the LORD a new song,
for he has done wondrous deeds;
His right hand has won victory for him,
his holy arm.

THE LORD HAS MADE KNOWN HIS SALVATION.

The LORD has made his salvation known:
in the sight of the nations he has revealed his justice.
He has remembered his kindness and his faithfulness
toward the house of Israel.

THE LORD HAS MADE KNOWN HIS SALVATION.

All the ends of the earth have seen
the salvation by our God.
Sing joyfully to the LORD, all you lands;
break into song; sing praise.

THE LORD HAS MADE KNOWN HIS SALVATION.

🙏ALLELUIA
Matthew 11:25

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth;
you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the Kingdom.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

✝ GOSPEL
Mark 10:28-31

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Saint Mark

Peter began to say to Jesus,
"We have given up everything and followed you."
Jesus said, "Amen, I say to you,
there is no one who has given up house or brothers or sisters
or mother or father or children or lands
for my sake and for the sake of the Gospel
who will not receive a hundred times more now in this present age:
houses and brothers and sisters
and mothers and children and lands,
with persecutions, and eternal life in the age to come.
But many that are first will be last, and the last will be first."

The Gospel of the Lord.
Thanks be to God

SAINT PHILIP NERI - PRIEST

Giving up his commercial activities at the age of 26, Philip Neri went to Rome to seek his own sanctification and that of his fellowmen. He led a disciplined life of prayer and penance and studied philosophy and theology; he frequently visited the Seven Churches—a 12-mile pilgrimage which he would perform on foot after sundown, often spending entire nights in the catacomb of St Sebastian. In 1548 he founded a confraternity to care for poor pilgrims and started the monthly adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.

Ordained priest in 1551, he went on to become an outstanding confessor and counselor, combining as he did popularity with deep piety against the background of a corrupt Rome and a disinterested clergy. He would celebrate Mass with loving delight and devote his afternoons to engaging young men and boys in talks, games or visits to the Seven Churches, bringing home to the minds of people spiritual truths in the most unusual but efficacious ways. From 1564, several of his followers became priests and settled down with him at the Church of San Giovanni de Fiorentini, praying and eating in common, celebrating the Eucharist and preaching regularly.

This sowed the seed of what was to become known as the “Oratory”, whose distinctive feature was the regular afternoon session of informal talks held in a little room above the Church concerning spiritual matters.
An outstanding mystic of the Counter-Reformation, Philip passed away on the Feast of Corpus Christi, 1595 and was canonized in 1622.

Reflection: “We must take care of little faults, for he who once begins to go backward, and to make light of such defects, brings a sort of grossness over his conscience, and then goes wrong altogether” (St Philip Neri).

TO OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY

O Virgin Mary, grant that the recitation of thy Rosary may be for me each day, in the midst of my manifold duties, a bond of unity in my actions, a tribute of filial piety, a sweet refreshment, an encouragement to walk joyfully along the path of duty. Grant, above all, O Virgin Mary, that the study of thy fifteen mysteries may form in my soul, little by little, a luminous atmosphere, pure, strengthening, and fragrant, which may pe*****te my understanding, my will, my heart, my memory, my imagination, my whole being. So shall I acquire the habit of praying while I work, without the aid of formal prayers, by interior acts of admiration and of supplication, or by aspirations of love. I ask this of thee, O Queen of the Holy Rosary, through Saint Dominic, thy son of predilection, the renowned preacher of thy mysteries, and the faithful imitator of thy virtues. Amen.

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY BY SAINT PHILIP NERI

Mary, I love you.
Mary, make me live in God, with God, and for God.
Draw me after you, holy mother.
O Mary, may your children persevere in loving you.
Mary, Mother of God and mother of mercy, pray for me and for the departed.
Mary, holy Mother of God, be our helper.
In every difficulty and distress, come to our aid, O Mary.
O Queen of Heaven, lead us to eternal life with God.
Mother of God, remember me, and help me always to remember you.
O Mary, conceived without sin,
pray for us who have recourse to you.
Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,
that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray to Jesus for me
Amen

O God, who never cease to bestow the glory of holiness on the faithful servants you raise up for yourself, graciously grant that the Holy Spirit may kindle in us that fire with which he wonderfully filled the heart of Saint Philip Neri. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
