Pope Leo XIV Appoints African Political Theologian Fr. Emmanuel Katongole to Vatican Dicastery

Pope Leo XIV has appointed Fr. Emmanuel Katongole, a leading African theologian, as an advisor (Consultor) to the Vatican’s Dicastery for Integral Human Development.

What the Appointment Entails:

As a Consultor, Fr. Katongole will serve as an expert advisor to the Vatican department responsible for promoting Catholic teachings on global social issues.

His specific responsibilities include:

Advising Vatican Leadership:

Providing expert guidance to the Pope and Church leaders on key issues, particularly peace, economic justice, social ethics, climate action, and care for creation.

Drafting and Shaping Policy:

Assisting in the preparation of official Vatican documents, strategy reports, and major initiatives related to global human development.

Bringing an African Perspective:

Contributing grounded expertise from his academic research in political theology and his hands-on ecological work in East Africa to shape the Catholic Church's global policies.

Background and Education

Born in Uganda in 1960 to Rwandan parents, he was ordained a Catholic priest in 1987.
He earned his Master’s and PhD in Philosophy and Ethics from the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium.

Academic Career

He currently works at the University of Notre Dame in the U.S. as a Professor of Theology and Peace Studies, while directing its doctoral program.

He serves as Director of Notre Dame's Ansari Institute for Global Engagement with Religions and is an Extraordinary Professor at Stellenbosch University in South Africa.

Before Notre Dame, he taught at Duke University, where he co-founded the Duke Center for Reconciliation.

Known as a world-renowned expert in African political theology, he has lectured at top universities like Oxford, Harvard, and Yale, and was named one of the "50 Minds That Matter" by The Tablet magazine in 2018.

Environmental & Community Work

In 2012, he co-founded the Bethany Land Institute (BLI) in Uganda to teach young people sustainable farming, tree planting, and care for the earth, inspired by Pope Francis's environmental teachings (Laudato Si').

BLI has trained about 100 young people and planted over 500,000 trees across local Ugandan communities.

His work at BLI gained international recognition, including a showcase at the COP29 climate conference in Baku.

Published Works:

Fr. Katongole has written numerous books on faith, ethics, and African politics, including The Sacrifice of Africa (2011), Born from Lament (2017), and Who Are My People? (2022).

When Catholic Bishops are out in public, they usually wear a long black robe called a cassock instead of their bright church vestments.

This choice connects centuries of tradition with the everyday work of leading the Church.
The black cassock tells the public that the Bishop is both a humble servant and a leader.

The Spiritual Meaning of the Color Black

The color black is chosen for very specific reasons:

Humility:
Black is a simple color and it shows that the Bishop wants people to focus on God and the Church, not on him as an individual.

Living for God:
Symbolically, black represents dying to selfish desires so that the Bishop can give his whole life to serving Christ.

Easy to Recognize:
A black outfit is an instant sign to the public that the wearer is a Church leader.
Anyone who needs help, prayer, or guidance can spot a Bishop easily.

The Details on the Bishop’s Black Cassock

The black cassock is the Bishop's standard outfit for daily office work and public meetings.
While a regular Priest wears a plain black robe, a Bishop’s robe has special details to show his role:

Reddish-Purple Trim:

The buttons, edges, and stitching are a deep reddish-purple color (called amaranth).
This trim marks his high rank in the Church.

The Sash and Cap:
He wears a matching reddish-purple silk belt (a fascia) around his waist and a small skullcap (a zucchetto) on his head.

The Pectoral Cross:
A large cross hangs over his chest on a chain.
This is a clear public sign that he is a successor of Christ's early Apostles.

As the National Convention of CAMPAN - OWERRI 2026 draws to an end, an AGM was held and communique issued - Details of which come up later.

To God be the Glory the Event came to a successful end and thanks to the Federal Government for declaring the days Public Holidays.

We pray for a safe journey back to all participants that travelled far to be present.

The National Convention of The Catholic Media Practitioners Association of Nigeria CAMPAN took off 18th March 2026 with arrivals of Participants from various parts of the country to the venue of activities Assumpta Pastoral Centre Wetheral Road Owerri.

The opening ceremony which began with Mass at Maria Assumpta Cathedral was presided over by the Auxiliary Bishop Most Rev Dr Chikwe who stood in for the Archbishop Ugorji and assisted by numerous Rev Frs.
The event later proceeded to Assumpta Pastoral Centre where the Opening protocols were to hold.

With hearts overflowing with gratitude to God, we celebrate 67 years of the Young Catholic Students in Nigeria 67 years of grace, growth, and unwavering faithfulness. From the humble beginning a testimony to the fire that began in 1959 and continues to spread like a bushfire!
The Lord has been the foundation, the strength, and the light of this Movement. Through every challenge and triumph, He has sustained us, raised leaders among us, and transformed countless young lives through the spirituality of See, Judge, and Act. Today, we do not merely mark the passage of time; we lift up thanksgiving for a legacy of impact, for stars formed, for faith deepened, and for a fire that continues to burn brightly in schools across our nation.

For 67 years, YCS Nigeria has continued to:
- Form leaders and raise stars
- Inspire testimonies of transformed lives
- Promote justice, peace, and moral integrity
- Instill virtues in young people
- Build citizens not only for Heaven but for responsible earthly service.

Through thick and thin, setbacks and struggles, challenges and triumphs we are still standing strong. We are still making waves. We are still bringing students to Christ and Christ to students.

We are not just celebrating years
We are celebrating impact.
We are celebrating identity.
We are celebrating a Movement that challenges young people to confront life courageously and respond with faith-filled action. Only a Young Catholic Student knows the joy of being a YCSER!
