THE CHRISTIANDOM CELEBRATES ASH WEDNESDAY TODAY

Ash Wednesday is a holy day of prayer and fasting observed by many Western Christian denominations. It is a solemn day of fasting, prayer, and repentance, marking the beginning of the 40-day Lenten season that leads to Easter.

In 2026, Ash Wednesday falls on February 18 being today. On this day, millions of Christians around the world begin their Lenten journey — a period dedicated to reflection, sacrifice, and spiritual renewal. The observance serves as a sacred preparation for Easter, which occurs approximately six and a half weeks later.

The use of ashes on Ash Wednesday carries deep biblical symbolism, representing humility, repentance, and human mortality. This symbolism is reflected in several scriptural passages:

“Therefore I disown what I have said, and repent in dust and ashes.” — Job 42:6

“Daughter of my people, dress in sackcloth, roll in the ashes.” — Jeremiah 6:26

“I turned to the Lord God to seek help, in prayer and petition, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes.” — Daniel 9:3

“When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, laid aside his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes… ‘Man and beast alike must be covered with sackcloth and call loudly to God. Let everyone turn from their evil ways.’” — Jonah 3:6–8

These passages highlight the enduring spiritual themes of repentance, contrition, and the seeking of God’s mercy — themes that remain central to Ash Wednesday observances today.

The Women’s Sensitization Program, organized in preparation for Mothering Sunday on 15th March, 2026, was successfully held on Sunday, the 1st of February, 2026. The short event enlightened women and the congregation on the true meaning of Christian motherhood, emphasizing godly virtues, family responsibility, and spiritual commitment. It also described the events that happens on this notable day. They invited and is still inviting all and sundry to their event.

LUKE 4: 22 - 30

FAMILIARITY CAN HINDER FAITH

It is difficult to have the entire congregation in a church understand wholesomely, a message from the pulpit. The message of the day is either accepted with joy or rejected with anger. In verse 22, we read how it played out. While some marvelled at how well Jesus spoke, others relegated Him with words like: who does he think he is? Is he not the ordinary carpenter's son, Joseph a commoner? He must be acting all that from a script. Jesus in His response to their inference, did not hesitate to warn them against the consequences of their position (verse 23). Unfortunately, their unbelief was so bad that Jesus couldn't do miracles, He did in other places (Matthew 13:57-58). That is what too much familiarity can cause. Today, members of the congregation pay more attention to invited ministers, than fellow members as speakers for the day.

Apart from disrespecting Jesus, they went to the extreme of attempting to terminate His life, to avoid a repeat of such bitter truths that ought to trigger repentance from devilish ways of life (verse 28). Preachers of sound message hardly escape being persecuted. Show me a Christian who is not persecuted and I will show you one that doesn't preach sound messages. So the people that came to worship God, left the church (synagogue) to commit murder (verse 29). It's no wonder we see such happening in the life of Friday worshippers after inciting sermons. Today, we equally have highly influential church members warn presiding priests against repeats of inviting seasoned preachers, whose messages touch their evil lifestyles.

Years back, millions of Naira was spent by stinking sly rich and influential laity of a church to restrain a Provost that was elected Bishop with court injunction for almost one year. Just because of his Scripture Union background, he is regarded as fanatical. We may not go to that extreme but criticise the dressing of the preacher, his car if he has one, his grammar, tribe and obvious challenges like not having been blessed with fruit of the womb.

We will do well if we go by the saying, forget what is written on the body of the bus and enter. For those who don't understand, what is written on the body of the bus has nothing to do with the capability of the bus taking you to your destination but the tyres, engine and expertise of the driver, do. It was to that end, Jesus made references to the widow at Zarephath and Naaman that were singled out for blessing and cleansing amongst all others (verses 25-27). Be concerned to live by the truth from the message (sermon), you hear as God still singles out a few for blessings and not the entire congregation.

God grant me the grace to receive the word of God I hear from preachers as the Word from God in Jesus' name,🙏
