*LEADERSHIP RETREAT HELD ON SATURDAY 24TH JANUARY 2026. Theme: Becoming a Leader After the Mind of Christ*

_Presented by Fr Dr. Valentine O. Anaweokhai at the one-day leadership retreat for the Parish Pastoral Council of SS. Joachim & Anne Catholic Church, Ososo, on 24th January 2026._

The retreat focused on forming church leaders after the mind of Christ, highlighting leadership as a call to service rather than a title. It emphasized that effective leaders guide, inspire, and take responsibility with vision, empathy, faithfulness, and love.

Jesus Christ was presented as the perfect model of leadership rooted in prayer, integrity, compassion, and a clear mission, leading through service and care for others.

Church leadership was examined through three dimensions:

*God:* leadership as a divine calling, accountable to God and guided by spiritual values;

*The Church:* responsibility for the spiritual and pastoral well-being of God’s people;

*The Leader:* leadership as a skill developed through personal growth in spiritual, intellectual, physical, and mental health.

Common leadership challenges include weak spiritual life, lack of discipline and skills, health issues, poor participation, financial difficulties, and weak planning structures.

The retreat concluded with practical guidance: ongoing formation through retreats and seminars, strong prayer life and communion with Church authority, integrity and vision in leadership, regular meetings, personal discipline, and collaborative, inclusive teamwork.

*A One Day Retreat for Liturgical Functionaries tagged: Reviving the Spirit of Service Among Liturgical Functionaries*

The retreat began with a brief welcome address by the Parish Priest, Very Rev. Fr Valentine Anaweokhai, to prepare the minds of the people present. Thereafter, the Blessed Sacrament was exposed, during which the rosary prayer was said alongside hymns.
Thereafter came the retreat talk tagged, *Reviving the Spirit of Service Among Liturgical Functionaries*

The Parish Priest /facilitator defined some of the keywords used, e.g. revive, liturgy and Liturgical functionaries.
He reminded all liturgical Functionaries present of their roles during the liturgy and how pivotal their ministries are in the enhancement and smooth flow of the liturgy.
He highlighted the fruits drawn from the liturgy which range from tapping wisdom from Christ to enhancing their relationship with God. It was noted also, that due to human frailty, anyone can become lukewarm but not without remedies. Many factors like sin, lack of sacramental confession and low spirituality could be responsible for lukewarmness on the part of a liturgical minister (functionary) while laziness, disobedience and absence of comportment are signs of this lukewarmness.
To remedy and bring back to life this spirit of service, the individual person must cultivate the spirit of self-evaluation and prayer. On the part of the association, they should show support for such individual in prayer, hospitality, good human relation, empathy in moments of trouble and support in any other way.
The facilitator concluded by stating that all these admonishments will be fruitless if there is no responsible leadership to champion this course.
A moment of quietness was observed before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament; thereafter, spontaneous prayers were said for each liturgical association present by a member from each of them, as the priest wasn't left out of the benefits of the prayers. The parish priest gave the final benediction and led the prayer before meal.
At the close of the retreat, group photographs were taken with the priest.
