SERMON DELIVERED BY DEACONESS R.O IGBIGBISIE DURING ODI-OLOWO ASSEMBLY WOMEN MOVEMENT RALLY HELD AT THE APOSTOLIC CHURCH NIGERIA, OSOGBO AREA HEADQUARTERS ON SUNDAY 23RD AUGUST, 2026.

THEME: LOVE OF THE WORLD AND ITS CONSEQUENCES

TEXT: 2 TIMOTHY 4:5-10

INTRODUCTION

The life of Demas presents a solemn warning about the danger of allowing the love of the world to take the place of our love and commitment to God.

Demas was once a fellow worker with Paul and was associated with the ministry (Colossians 4:14). However, Paul later recorded that Demas had forsaken him because he “loved this present world” (2 Timothy 4:10).

WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM DEMAS?

✓ He was once part of the ministry. Demas had a place among Paul's fellow workers, showing that being actively involved in God's work does not automatically guarantee steadfastness.

✓ He abandoned the work because of the world. His love for the present world became greater than his commitment to the things of God.

✓ He lacked perseverance - His departure reminds us that our Christian journey requires endurance, faithfulness and steadfastness to the end.

CONSEQUENCES OF LOVING THE WORLD

The story of Demas reminds us that misplaced priorities can lead to:

✓ Losing sight of God's calling and purpose.
✓ Losing valuable fellowship and commitment in God's work.
✓ Missing the eternal reward that comes from faithful service.
✓ Abandoning the good works God has prepared for us.
✓ Allowing worldly desires to weaken our relationship with God.

LESSONS FROM THE LIFE OF DEMAS

✓ Persevere to the end - “He that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.” (Matthew 24:13)

✓ The love of the world is dangerous. Worldly attractions can gradually draw the heart away from God.

✓ Temptation reveals our priorities. What we choose when tested often reveals what truly matters to us.

✓ Ministry requires perseverance. We must remain faithful even when the journey becomes difficult.

✓Keep eternity first. Our hearts must remain focused on the things that have eternal value. (Colossians 3:1-2)

✓ Guard your heart. “Keep thy heart with all diligence...” (Proverbs 4:23)

The life of Demas is a solemn warning to every believer, especially women committed to the work of God: stand firm in the faith, guard your heart, remain faithful in service, and never allow the attractions of this world to make you lose sight of eternity.

May our love for God always be greater than our love for the things of this world. May we remain faithful to the end and receive the reward of eternal life. Amen.

TOPIC: CHURCH MILITANT ON EARTH: WEAPONS OF THE CHURCH IN SPIRITUAL WARFARE

TEXT: 1 Peter 5:5:, 8-9

INTRODUCTION

The Christian life is a spiritual battle. Peter reminds us to “be sober and vigilant” because our adversary, the devil, is constantly seeking whom he may devour. Our battle cannot be won with human strength or carnal weapons, for “the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God” (2 Corinthians 10:4).

Spiritual battles require spiritual power. Our victory is found in Christ and in the power of His name and the blood He shed for us. If we must move forward and overcome the forces standing against us, we must learn to fight spiritually.

WEAPONS OF WARFARE TO VICTORY

✓ Faith in the Name of Jesus (Philippians 2:9-11)

✓ Faith in the Blood of Jesus (Revelation 12:11)

✓ Obedience to the Word of God (Hebrews 4:12)

✓ A Consistent Prayer Life (Matthew 17:21)

✓ A Life of Holiness (1 Peter 1:15-16)

✓ Consistent Worship (Acts 16:25)

The Church is not powerless. We have been given spiritual weapons to stand, resist the devil, and overcome. Stand firm in faith, remain prayerful, walk in holiness, obey God's Word, and never stop worshipping.

May God give us grace to stand firm and victory in every spiritual battle, in Jesus’ name. Amen. 🙏

TOPIC: CHURCH MILITANT ON EARTH

TEXTS: 1 Timothy 6:12; Ephesians 4:3-6; James 2:1-18

The Word of God given to Timothy remains a charge to the Church today. The Church has been entrusted with a divine assignment; to preach the Gospel, proclaim the salvation of Jesus Christ, and make His message of faith and redemption known to the world.

As the Church Militant on Earth, we are called to stand firm in faith and faithfully carry out the work Christ has committed to us.

OUR RESPONSIBILITY AS THE CHURCH

✓ We must not be partial: Our faith must not be influenced by status, wealth, position or appearance. We are called to love and treat people fairly, just as God does.

✓ We must see ourselves as one before God: There is no room for superiority or discrimination in the body of Christ. We are brethren, members of one body and recipients of the same grace.

✓ We must proclaim the message of salvation: The Gospel remains our primary assignment. We must continue to tell others about Jesus Christ, His saving grace and the redemption He offers.

✓ We must worship and fellowship together: Christianity is not a journey we are meant to walk alone. We must encourage one another, worship together and strengthen one another in the faith.

✓ We must build up the community of faith: Rather than pulling one another down, we should motivate, encourage and strengthen one another. The Church grows stronger when its members build each other up.

WHAT MUST THE CHURCH FIGHT FOR?

The Church must understand that our fellow believers are not our enemies. We must not fight ourselves or allow disagreements to destroy the unity of the body. Our fight is the good fight of faith (1 Timothy 6:12).

✓ Defend the oppressed: The Church must stand against poverty, oppression and unfair treatment. We are called to care for those who are vulnerable and speak where injustice exists (James 1:27).

✓ Care for the vulnerable: Faith must be demonstrated through action. When people are genuinely in need, we should not only speak about faith but show the love of Christ through practical care (James 2:14-18).

✓ Uphold human dignity: Every person deserves to be treated with dignity, compassion and respect. Our conduct should reflect the character of Christ.

✓ Promote peace and reconciliation: The Church should be a place where peace is pursued, relationships are restored and differences are resolved in love. We must be peacemakers, not troublemakers.

✓ Stand against injustice in the Church and society: We must not tolerate discrimination, favouritism or unfair treatment. James 2 reminds us that genuine faith must produce righteous conduct towards others.

✓ Live a holy life: Our greatest testimony is also found in the way we live. As the Church militant, we must remain committed to holiness, obedience and a life that brings honour to Christ.

WE ARE BRETHREN, NOT ENEMIES

The Church has a greater battle to fight; a battle for the Gospel, for righteousness, for holiness, for peace, for justice and for the souls of men.

May we remain united in Christ, faithful to our calling and courageous in our witness.

THE CHURCH IS MILITANT. THE ASSIGNMENT CONTINUES. LET US STAND FIRM IN CHRIST.
