HOW THE CHURCH QUENCHES THE REVIVAL

Revival is like a fire; purifying, quickening, strengthening, empowering, and giving life where there is weakness or deadness.
Revival is the work of the Holy Spirit through our Lord Jesus Christ and it is at the centre among the benefits of Jesus' finished work on the cross.

Matthew 3:11
"I (John, the baptist) indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:"

The worship of Jehovah took a drastic change as the earliest disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit for exceptional life of godliness, consecration to God, love for God and fellow humans and effective witness of Christ followed by mighty signs and miracles.

Acts 8:4
"Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word."

Acts 17:6 . . "These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also "

The above scriptures ( Acts 8:4. Acts 17:6 ) are some of the testimonies of the quickening of the Holy Spirit that was operating in the lifes of earliest disciples that though many of them were dislodged from their houses and cities, yet the fire they've got did not allow them to rest, so they "went everywhere preaching the word ". And their ministry so effective that it was said of them that " . . . they turned the then world upside down "

But the love of God and revival of the Holy Spirit have gone down in the lifes of believers and the church of this generation. And the root cause can not be traced to the devil or any forces from outside because Jesus Christ, The Faithful One, promised in His word that " . . . the gates of hell will not prevail against His church " (Matthew 16:18).
For clearer understanding, immediately after the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, He delegated all His power, authority and duties on the earth to His church ( those that pertake of His grace and salvation).
Please read John 14:12. Acts 1:8. Mark 16:17-18.

So Jesus Christ Himself become dependent on the Church for His purpose which is salvation of the world, which He died for, to be fulfilled. He cannot come to teach, preach or heal the sick on the earth again. If the church do not do the works, then the works cannot be done ( Luke 19:12-13 ).

God, in His glorious wisdom, provided all that the church will need for effective representation of Christ Jesus on the earth, the chiefest of which is the giving of the Holy Spirit, Who is the driving force of God, to fill believers.
He gave us also His word, ( Truth about repentance and salvation through faith in Christ Jesus) and the power of the attorney, which is ours whenever we use His Name (Jesus) in prayers.
We read the testimonies in the book of Acts of the apostles and through church history of some generations of the church what great things God can do through believers that surrender themselves to use all the heavenly provisions to fulfill the purpose of God on the earth.

Revival of the Holy Spirit is evident in believers when we manifest :
(i) deep and sincere love for God ( obedience to Him), love for the brethren ( sacrificial service to other saints) and compassion for the sinners ( to working for their salvation.
(ii) When we live in total surrenderness to do all the will of God, not minding the cost or consequences
(iii) When we live daily with eternity in view
(iv) When we manifest the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23), live holy and righteous always, not rising and falling
(v) When we are passionate and working tiredlessly to bring sinners, near and far to repentance, salvation and to the kingdom of God through regular evangelism, unceasing prayers and intercessions
(vi) When we have our gaze always on the things above and not on the things on the earth
(vii) When we manifest the power of God and authority over the devils and their works to cast them out, work miracles, healing, signs and wonders.

Now to the centre of the whole matter; HOW THE CHURCH QUENCHES THE REVIVAL. These are certain things that believers allowed in themselves that are either grieving the Holy Spirit ( Ephesians 4:30) or making believers loosing sensitivity and yieldedness to the impulse of the Holy Spirit. These result to lukewarmness in individual believers and the church at large, most especially in this generation.

Some of the factors are these:

(i) Many of church members, church workers and even church leaders do not experience the saving grace and redemption which is from Jesus Christ.
Salvation ( regeneration and renewal) is a miraculous work and gift of God through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ but some have ignorantly exchange it for religion, church membership and some religious works making the Holy Spirit absent in them and or in their assemblies so there could be no connection with the true revival.
To start with, repent of your sins and pray for the gift of salvation, in Jesus' Name, then fellowship with other believers that have evidence of salvation in them.
(ii) Not having the fullness of the works of grace in your life - SALVATION ( evidence that your past sins are forgiven, when you sin no more), SANCTIFICATION ( prayers to destroy the nature of sin in you and old self) and HOLY SPIRIT BAPTISM ( immersion in the power of the Spirit of God). Pray for all these experiences to be full.
(iii) Not dwelling enough in the presence of God - if you skip your daily prayers and study of God's Word. This will make your life more of the flesh and little of the Holy Spirit.
(iv) Less conviction against sin. Trivializing some sins, as small sins, grieves the Holy Spirit and your life non-habitable for Him. Ephesians 4:30.
(v) Not totally trusting in the Lord and in His word, hence using worldly wisdom to decide on matters of life. James 3:13-17.
(vi) Labouring on / seeking the things of this world more than the things of the kingdom of God will make you licentious and cold to the things of God's kingdom. Colossians 3:1-2.
(vii) Over protection of self or seeking comfort above the resources of the kingdom will make your life limited in grace and in the impulse of the Holy Spirit. Kingdom resources are mostly spiritual and can be gotten through unceasing prayers, fastings, evangelism, study / meditation on the word of God and self denial . 2nd Peter 1:5-10.
(viii) Not putting faith to work in your life, but living on sight-seen, calculations, and canal wisdom, will make your walk with God limited and ministry of the Holy Spirit impossible in your life.
(ix) Introduction of dogmas and rigid philosophical organizational strategies to the church, which are not rooted in the bible, whereby the Holy Spirit is practically sidelined in most christian assemblies. Ephesians 2:20. 4:11-15.
(x) Preaching and teaching things that are not tailored to salvation of the people and advancement of God's kingdom will only produce fleshly, traditional and worldly believers instead of genuine disciples of Jesus Christ. Mark 7:7-9. Matthew 28:20. 2nd Timothy 3:16-17.

In summary, all that is causing lukewarmness in believers and lack of revival in the church is that believers and the church system are going out of the bible - we are no more living or organizing ourselves according to biblical injunctions and patterns.
Biblical injunctions are guiding principles for living, ministry and gatherings of the people of God on the earth, as presented in the Holy Bible .
Some of the biblical injunctions are reflected in the ten (10) points listed above. I pray you will discover more and live by them , as you study and pray daily, in Jesus' Name.

THY KINGDOM COME

Matthew 6:9-10
"After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
THY KINGDOM COME. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven."

Bringing the kingdom of God on the earth, which means ensuring that people on the earth live according to the word, desire and commands of God as those in heaven, require more consciousness and activities added to prayers.

What is the kingdom of God?

Romans 14:17-19
" For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but RIGHTEOUSNESS, and PEACE, and JOY IN THE HOLY GHOST.
For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and approved of men.
Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another."

How do we bring the kingdom of God on the earth ?

(1) Preparing and living our lives for the kingdom of God, as good examples of Godliness on the earth.

Matthew 5:13-16
" Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. "

(2) Praying and preaching for Salvation of many, not just watching or criticizing, but working tirelessly for Salvation of others.

Ephesians 6:18
"Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;"

2 Timothy 4:1-2
" I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;
PREACH THE WORD; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine."

(3) Praying and working to help God's institutions to be according to God's pattern in His word -

(i) Marriage-
Matthew 19:3-6,
(ii)Church- John 13:34-35,
(iii) Family- Psalms 133:1-3,
(iv) Ministry- 1st Corinthians 4:1-2,
(v) Work or business ( Colossians 3:23-25) ; be diligent, fruitful, accountable, trustworthy, reliable....
(vi) Leadership and government- 2nd Samuel 23:1-3
(vii) Co-labourers with gospel ministers/church workers - Philippians 4:3

THE BASIS OF THE GOSPEL

It is good to clarify first and foremost, that among all the many other books of religion and belief system in the world, only the BIBLE is the Word of God.

The above statement is not a sentiment or mere defense of one's faith, it has facts among which are these :

(1) Only the BIBLE teaches and provides for deliverance from sin.
(2) Only the BIBLE teaches and provides for human beings to become new creatures. Other religions provide for adjustment and struggle with the nature of sin.
(3) Only the BIBLE teaches and provides for evident creative miracles through simple prayers, because it operates through the power of the Only Creator. Other religions work on methods which can never achieve creative miracles.

We shall examine some points which form the basis/foundation on which the Bible is given and the Gospel is preached.

(1) The Bible / Gospel is based on the thoughts, the ways and the attributes of God.

As you study the Bible, you will see God as He is - The Supreme, Loving, Compassionate, Unquestionable, Righteous, Eternal God.

Isaiah 55:8-9
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Daniel 4:34-35
And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honoured him that liveth for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation:
And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?

1 Corinthians 1:18, 25
For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

Because God is the Author of the bible, it may be conflicting with human natural senses and so the need for us to pray to be filled with the mind and the Spirit of God.

For example, Matthew 7:7
Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:

We may be asking, why do I need to ask since God knows every of my needs. The answer is, that is His way. Ask.

(2) The Bible / Gospel is also based on this truth that there will always be presence of temptation everywhere.

Temptation means enticement or invitation to sin.

Genesis 2:7-9
"And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.
And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and THE TREE OF THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOOD AND EVIL "

We may ask why did God put the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in the garden since He didn't want Adam and Eve to eat it?

Because God expects human beings to obey His commandments freely being our Creator .

Matthew 6:13
"And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: . . . "

Ephesians 6:13
Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

Thanks to God that He made provisions for us to pray not to fall into temptations that will always be around us and to have every heavenly resources and wisdom to always overcome whenever the temptations come.

(3) The Bible / Gospel is based on the creation of human beings with expectations to make choices.

Genesis 2:16-17
And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:
But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

The fall of human being in the garden of Eden is their choice, because there were other fruits there and they also had the commandments of God.
So also everything that happen to us in this world and the word to come are results of the choices we made. So we must always be watchful.
To fulfill a destiny, purpose or God's covenant, the choices we make all along serve most important factor to succeed or otherwise.

Esau chosed a plate of pottage in exchange for his birthright. Genesis 25:29-34.

Hezekiah chosed not to die though it was a notice from God, he prayed and God averted the death. 2nd Kings 20:1-6.

(4) The Bible / Gospel is also based on the assured consequence of sin and of righteousness.

Psalms 50:6
"And the heavens shall declare his righteousness: for God is judge himself. "

Daniel 9:13-14
As it is written in the law of Moses, all this evil is come upon us: yet made we not our prayer before the LORD our God, that we might turn from our iniquities, and understand thy truth.
Therefore hath the LORD watched upon the evil, and brought it upon us: for the LORD our God is righteous in all his works which he doeth: for we obeyed not his voice.

Revelation 22:11-12
He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.
And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.

God judges because He is righteous. He cannot reward evil to the person that chosed good or reward good to the person that chosed evil.

It is very important for us to pray ceaselessly for inspiration of the Holy Spirit to understand the Word of God.
As we also read the bible and meditate upon the Word of God with this background knowledge discussed in this message, we will be free from confusion and the word of God become profitable for us in this world and the world to come.

The Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
