In this ongoing discourse on love, Jesus today in the Gospel passage takes *this great Theological Virtue of LOVE* to a new height—by saying that the highest show and proof of love is laying down one's life for others. _*"Greater love has no man than this, that a man should lay down his life for his friends"*_ (John. 15:13) Yes! While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. St. Paul says that's how God has proved His love for us. (Rom. 5:8). Love has been the Hallmark of Christianity from its very inception. It was for love that Jesus mounted the wood of the cross and died for all humanity. It was for love that the heavens welcome martyrs and saints every day for those who loved Jesus and His gospel more than their lives and are very ready to lay down their lives for His sake, and that of the Gospel. Propelled by love, Maximilian Kolbe, one of the admirable saints of the last century, gave up his life in exchange for a condemned criminal.
Christianity is a religion where love is the supreme law, the zenith, and the sum-total of all the laws. It is a religion where dying for others and a cause is like a sweet-smelling fragrance!
You have heard me say before that *"no one can be open to love without the risk of pain."* Yes! To love is both painful and it's of supreme good! It becomes painful when the one you are dying for doesn't care about whatever you are doing for him or her. It becomes very painful when the one you are laying down your life for, rejects your sacrifices or treats your Love for them with triviality! One can only imagine the pain in the heart of Jesus when the people He came to save, liberate, heal, and feed, kept shouting *'Crucify Him! Crucify Him!'*
Christ's love has no limit! It is a total self-giving and knows no distinction. I said a few days ago that It was the height of expression of love for humanity that Jesus mounted the wood of the Cross and died in our stead. And while undergoing the treacherous and excruciating pain on the Cross, He graciously excused the sins of His executioners and asked His Heavenly Father to forgive them for they knew not what they were doing. This is heroic! True Love is open to all—that is, every creature of God, humans, animals, plants, and nature itself. Love finds expression in all circumstances of life. It occupies all. *Love is God, and God is love!* I'm sure you've heard that before.
Love is in the service of all. It is the bedrock of our existence and creation and the propelling force of our lives. Creation has its source in love. Creation itself is a product and a projection of God's love for whatever we are and for whatever we see today. Love is transcendental! It goes beyond the physical to the metaphysical limits!
We have these great *Theological Virtues of Faith, Hope, and Charity.* in the end, Faith will cease. Hope will cease as well! But at the end of everything *only charity—that is, love, perdures to eternity.* The other two end here. In heaven, you will have the privilege to behold face to face, the object of your faith and hope. So you won't need them again. But you will keep loving forever thus an object of your faith and hope (See 1 Cor. 13:4-13). _*Faith, hope, and charity, the fundamental principles of Catholicity, are known as the theological virtues. ... All three virtues are oriented toward God. Knowing and believing in God makes one aspire for Him, and then adore Him. These three virtues are related to one another with God in the center. However, Love is the greatest of them all!*_
The victory attained by the Church in her first General Council at Jerusalem was motivated and propelled by true love and concern for the welfare of others. It liberated the Church and its members. One does not have to become a Jew before becoming a Christian and all that is necessary is *the avoidance of evils and all forms of immoralities, but doing good, and being true to the ways and principles of Christ Jesus.* Christianity is, therefore, transcultural—that is, it cuts across all cultures on earth, and it's about being responsible towards one another and beyond ethnocultural boundaries. It's about a loving relationship with the other—doing good always, whatever it takes, painful or not, demanding or less demanding! Just do it! Just keep on loving!
Jesus has given the *supreme example* to follow by all of us His disciples—to be ready to go the extra mile for and with our fellow brothers and sisters. Christ laid down His life for us His friends. This is another powerfully consoling thing—to be called the friends of Christ—to whom He has made known the secrets of the kingdom of God. His mission here, then, would be to gather souls for the kingdom. His demand, therefore, is for us to be like Him and so to become fruitful for Him, to bear fruits that will endure forever. God help us! Amen!
_*Shall we rise and pray?*_
_*Heavenly Lord and God, we thank you for creating us in love and showing us the greatest ideals of love—laying down our lives for others. Help us to live this great ideal of love. Grant that the Easter mysteries may shape our lives so that what we celebrate with joy may be our constant defense and salvation. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever, Amen!*_

Join us in praying for peace around the world, ravaged by war, insurrection, chaos, and anarchy. May the love of God spread throughout the world, Amen. Let's pray for a successful and favorable outcome of the ongoing election tribunal throughout the nation. May true justice prevail in the end, Amen.
Keep standing in the gap praying for me and my fellow priests and religious sisters and brothers working in all parts of this great Diocese of Nigeria and beyond, so that we may continue to be great agents of His love to the sick and ailing world. I remain always your truly humble servant, priest, and friend,
