As the Nigeria/Biafra war came to an end in 1970, then Archbishop of Onitsha was summoned by Gowon to Dodan Barracks.

Gowon: Archbishop, you are being queried for deliberately prolonging the war (1967-1970).

Arinze: How could I have done that when I am only a spiritual leader?

Gowon: You did. You flew in food and medication, and so forth.

Arinze: What I (and other churches) did in Biafra is legitimate. It obtains wherever there's warfare; the Church flies in food, clothing, medication, etc. The aim is to help the victims of war - children, the hungry, the injured, the sick, pregnant women, and others.

Gowon: I'm not satisfied.

Consequences/punishment for the Church for helping Biafrans - expulsion of all foreign missionaries, government take over of all Church schools; etc.

The irony, unfortunately, is that some of those whose ancestors profited from the Church's immense help are today calling the Church a 'scam'.
