*HOW TO HANDLE UNSERIOUS MEMBERS IN A LOCAL CHURCH*
Handling unserious members in a local church requires wisdom, patience, and love—not harshness. The goal is restoration, not rejection (Galatians 6:1).
Here are practical ways to treat them:
1. Lead by Example
Sometimes members become unserious because leadership lacks fire.
Be committed, punctual, prayerful, and disciplined. Your seriousness can inspire them.
2. Pray for Them
Some spiritual issues are handled spiritually.
Pray for conviction, growth, and hunger for God (Colossians 4:12).
3. Private Counseling
Don’t embarrass them publicly.
Speak to them privately, understand their challenges, and encourage them (Matthew 18:15).
4. Discover the Root Cause
Ask:
Are they discouraged?
Facing personal problems?
Offended?
Spiritually weak?
Understanding the cause helps you apply the right solution.
5. Give Responsibility
Sometimes people become serious when they are given small responsibilities.
Luke 16:10 — He that is faithful in little will be faithful in much.
6. Teach on Commitment
Preach and teach about faithfulness, accountability, and dedication.
7. Set Clear Standards
Let members know what is expected—attendance, punctuality, participation.
Love must also include structure.
8. Correct with Love
If someone continues in carelessness, gentle correction is necessary (Proverbs 27:5).
Discipline should restore, not destroy.
9. Know When to Focus on the Willing
Not everyone will change immediately.
Jesus focused more on committed disciples than the crowd.
Important Balance
Avoid gossiping about them.
Avoid favoritism.
Avoid harsh public rebuke unless absolutely necessary.
INCONCLUTION
Pray for them. Counsel them. Correct them. Give responsibility. Maintain standards.
